Search function broken?

Is it just me, or does the search function in the upper right hand corner just not work, ever?  I always get the same error message:

  • PDO Statement failed to prepare|Gdn_Database|Query|The used table type doesn’t support FULLTEXT indexes

There’s loads of info on this site, so it would be really nice if the search engine actually worked when looking for something in particular.  In the meantime, snuffhouse can be googled by going to the google search engine and typing in:

[your search term] site:snuffhouse.com

It’s just a workaround, but it helps.  I wasn’t sure where to post this; hopefully this is the correct place.

Perhaps the IT folks here can just insert that code into the website search function.

Or at least sticky this post at the top?

I have tried to use and always get the same note also. ~X( ???

A search function that works properly would be very helpful in holding down the number of duplicate discussions.  It’s easier for somebody to just start a new discussion than to manually search through pages of already established discussions.  The Google workaround that I mentioned in the original post does the job; it’s just not as convenient.

Yes, and I also like to search for discussions and posts about particular types of snuff this way so that I can read others’ opinions about different snuffs that I own and intend on purchasing.

For example, I wanted to read some opinions and flavor profile descriptions on F&T Old Paris, but all I get is an error when I type in Paris or any other keyword… weird.

The site:snuffhouse.com google-search work around is very easy to use. Not as easy as a search box at the top of the page. But, I use the site:snuffhouse.com search probably 4 to 5 times a day, and it works really well.

You just type in site:snuffhouse.com in the query box on google, and then whatever search term you are looking for. For instance, “site:snuffhouse.com F&T old paris” or “site:snuffhouse.com old paris.” That last search string brings up:

http://snuffhouse.com/discussion/5405/f-t-old-paris-mmm

http://snuffhouse.com/discussion/10096/old-paris

http://snuffhouse.com/discussion/9182/f-t-old-paris

http://snuffhouse.com/discussion/8153/f-t-recommendations-please-i-love-old-paris

http://snuffhouse.com/discussion/1945/old-paris-technique

http://snuffhouse.com/discussion/7454/old-paris

…and several more. I don’t know if or when the search function will be fixed on this site. But, I’m in such a habit of using the google-work-around, that even if they fixed it…I’d probably still use the google-work-around.

I’m the same way - I like to research different blends and see the opinions in this forum to help me when I am making purchases.  Of course, everybody has varying tastes and opinions about particular snuffs, but when the same comments keep turning up about a particular blend, whether it’s thumbs up or down, that’s very useful to me.  There’s more practical information and experience about snuff on this site than anywhere else, I think … it’s just a matter of finding something in particular when you need it.

There is an incredible depth of knowledge over time here on the message board.  Pretty amazing.

Hey Mark,

Thanks for all your hard work on this site!  Just throwing this out … I’m not sure of the particulars, but Google has a customizable search engine that you can embed on your own site.  All you do is set it up to search only this site.

That might make be easier than to try to fix a broken search function.

@nostalgicnose, I’m just a visitor here like yourself.  Hopefully the folks that do maintain this site will get a chance to look at the search function, or to add something like you suggested.  But, for now, you and I just get to discuss stuff, read, learn, and make sure our snoots are always full of snuff.  :-)

@markstinson

I’m such a noob … well, thanks to whoever it is who maintains this site!  It’s the place to be for those who love their snuff.

I’m a noob too.  No worries!  :-)

Okay, I’ve added a Custom Google Search box that will search every post in the history of the Snuffhouse message board.  It is below the MrSnuff banner in the left-hand sidebar.  It appears on every page, so it is always handy.

I’m going to see if I can replace the broken search box at the top of the message board, but until that happens…the search box in the left-hand side-bar works perfectly.  Give it a try.

@markstinson  Oh yeah … that’s very helpful.  As far as I’m concerned, it can replace the broken search function in the top right hand corner, but I am grateful for a usable search function wherever it is … thanks, Mark!

No problem.  The broken search box is gone now…

I tried moving the google search box up to the space where the broken search box was located, but something about the script made the site blow up.  So, for now at least…the broken search box at the top is gone, and the fully-functional search box is in the left-hand sidebar, with a nice little graphic above it to draw attention to it.

Looks good!
