Scotch snuff

So here’s the deal. I started my snuff career on American scotches. All very well and good. But really, they are all bbq-ey and sometimes sweet. So what’s the difference? They’re like Schmalzler’s - they pretty much have the same aroma’s. After a few months of dabbling in the british and german snuffs I have returned to my american scotches for a bit. I can now appreciate them and their place in the snuff world. it’s nice to get a good stiff hit of nicotine that lingers for a bit or where you have to blow your nose or turn green hahaha! As i type this I have imbibed of 3 thistles, though my favorite is Square.

W.E. Garrett was the first one I tried.

What I like about the American scotches is that they fit anytime, anywhere in my daily rotation. I don’t use them all day but I do use them every day. Levi Garrett, Standard, Square, Three Thistles Strong, Starr, and Wild Cherry are my favorites. Also because they are so dry they can be left around in table top boxes with little worries. Hooray for scotches!

I love the scotch snuffs. TI have to be in the mood for the sweets, but they too have their place. Have you tried Starr snuff? It’s the least BBQ tasting scotch I know of, and it also has a nice complex subtlety.

No, i haven’t tried Starr, but i’m interested. I have heard good things about it.

I use Scotches everyday as well, and would like to offer a recommendation for those who are turned off of “sweet” scotches: Lorillard Sweet. The sweetness is more the sweetness of fresh cut wood in a warm room, as opposed to butter or honey. Goes great with Blonde on Blonde, especially the old mono mix, and anything from Bonnie Raitts first three albums. As I’ve mentioned before, it’s the scent of upstairs in an old, old house in East Texas in April, with plank floors and somebody playing the blues downstairs on the piano. For those of you who don’t live in The South, it’s 88 degrees in East Texas in April, with 120% humidity.

Wow, its April there already?

Daylight savings time, we set our calendars ahead one month.

Why are the American snuffs called scotches? Come to think on it, why are a lot of toasts called Irish?

I use WE Garrett, Square, Three Thistle, and RR Mills plain scotches regularly. There is a smash-box full of two of those four close at hand at any given time.

I love the American snuffs a lot, My favourites are bruton, honey bee and rooster, I often mix them with other snuffs. And you get a lot of snuff for a small price.

Welcome back to the scotches Saucy!! I too am a fan of the European way. Tonquin and Bergamont are about the best things they put in their snuffs. And I agree about the coarse grind. But at the end of the day I won’t wipe off my American grit. My girlfriend tries to call me Dickensian but I say “naw darlin, Jacksonian’” I was raised on campfires, crude behavior and straightalk. Thats the enjoyment I get out of Scotch. Just plain ol’ 'baccy. I use Red Seal, Square, and W.E. mostly. I have others though. I have made it my intent to get all the scotches available both sweet and plain. If your in for a scotch that is different than the rest try Red Seal. Its a sweet but the scent is not like the other sweets I have. It smells spicey(cinnamon and nutmeg) and fermented and eventually, smoked. Highly recommended.

Red Seal is not as strong as a lot of scotches, but to me has a better burn than most when snuffed.
