I am visting Taiwan for a couple months. I went out to eat lunch with some relatives. We went to a restaurant where I had never before been. Tea was served. As I put the cup up to my mouth the smell of the tea hit my nose and I could not believe it. It smelled just like an American scotch snuff. The taste of the tea I can only describe as scotch snuff, slightly sweet with some lemon/fruit. I could not believe my nose! I’m trying to find out what kind of fruit was in the tea.
Taiwan is big for Oolong tea. There are dozens of varieties. I’ve gotten simialar whifs sometimes from teas. A good black tea that has an almost tobacco taste to it is Hao Ya. Hao Ya “A” is pretty expensive, but Hao Ya “B” is quite reaonable. Its one of my favorite teas, I’m expecting a shipment of it any day.
There are a number of smoked teas. Lapsong such or some such spellng is a good guess. Russian caravan is scotchy. Some temple of heaven gunpowder teas are really scotch like. Then as xander said oolong there is a whole mess of taiwanesse oolongs that may fit the bill. Taiwan has some great oolongs. My favorite is four seasons not scotch like at all but wonderfull none the less.
