Scotch packaging: What the hell?

Warning, noob rant ahead. So I’ve been snuffing daily now since about February and been getting great enjoyment from English and other European style snuffs. Well when I decided to make an order with Mr.Snuff for a change I made the leap and ordered a couple of scotches; Railroad MIlls Maccoboy and Tube Rose, the latter of which I’ve heard very good things about. The Maccoboy I tried on the day I received my order, I found it pleasant if a little bland but I thought the little bottle it comes in is quite cool and unique. Today I decided to try the Tube Rose and all I can say is what the hell? Am I brick stupid or is this the worst snuff packaging conceivable to man? I quickly located the “seam” between the lid and the cardboard tube (which I mistakenly expected to be tin for a start) even though it was hidden cleverly underneath the label. After a few seconds of prying it becomes obvious that the body of the container is giving way, the label tears and I see what is none other than a toilet roll tube staring back at me and snuff pouring out. At this point I think I’ve damaged the container itself and ready a freezer bag to catch the snuff, as I pop the lid off snuff gushes everywhere and I realise that the tube was filled into the lid… fucksake. Evidence of the snuff massacre: Luckily I have a large toque tin I can transfer the contents into because quite frankly I wouldn’t wipe my arse with this container, although someone else may have come close.

Yeah, I was confused by the W.E. Garrett container, but it didn’t go as dreadfully wrong as yours did. The Swisher and USST tubs are plastic, which is much better.

To be fair, when I pressed down into the tube the snuff seemed to be quite “puffed” out and aerated so in retrospect if I’d have given the tube a sharp smack on my desk before I opened it there probably wouldn’t have been about 2 grammes of snuff sat in the lid  But still, this packaging is pretty appalling.

American Snuff packaging hasn’t changed in a century at the very least. I still get a chuckle over threads on SMPost about people frustrated with trying to open Copenhagen fibreboard tins. (A thumbnail or Guitar plec works best.) The same technique applies with Scotch. Run your finger along the rim of the can until you feel where the lid starts and use the instructions above. The label will come off the top, but the remaining bit will join with the metal lid aiding the seal.

@Mr_Snuffpants: Unfortunately I don’t have a “remaining bit”, my Tube Rose as been well and truly circumcised.

@street carp Not sure where you can find a local Rabbi or Imam to bless it. You should see how McVities Digestives are packed for export. Like those Russian Matriushka dolls.

Nasty. Nothing more iritating than the stuff going everywhere.

I can’t say I’ ve had quite the same disaster, but I feel your pain. I need a razor blade along te seam to open these guys properly.

I hate paperboard cans. This is where my Tube Rose is kept…

I had the same problem with the scotch containers when I first tried to open one, and even if you open it without ruining the label when you try to put the cap back on the label gets stuck underneath and it doesn’t close properly. I found the best and easiest way is to do as NPC suggested, and that is to take a razor or exacto-knife and run it along the seam. That way you still have most of the label intact and can open and close the tin without the excess label getting in the way. @bipolarbear1968: What is that beside the tubs, is it you wireless receiver for your keyboard/mouse?

Bipolar a seagrams can is a horrible place to store snuff.

That looks just like the WE Garrett can i bought yesterday. Mine didn’t turn out so badly though. I have experience with opening the fiberboard cans though from Copenhagen and General Los products. Just used my fingernail to cut the paper right under the lid and worked it off. Seals pretty good and after transferring some to an empty camel snus tin(threw away the crappy snus that was in there), The can is sitting on a shelf now and looks fine. I was also surprised at how full it was and ended up getting it all over the place. Tapping it on the desk is probably a good idea for next time. Thanks for that.
