I guess I have tried about every style of snuff out there, and lots and lots of flavors. One style that eludes me, mainly because I haven’t found a place that carries it that I can get shipped to the US is Schmalzler. I started this discussion so you can tell me what I am missing out on, and also so you can tell me I am wrong, and there IS a place I can get shipping to the US from. So, snuffhouse, what is Schmalzler all about?
A course, moist snuff often flavoured and moistened by fruit syrups/oils. Clumpy texture that can be tricky to take. As memory serves, click on ‘snuffstore’ to the left of this text box and I believe they carry it.
Yep, Snuff Store carries quite a few of the Bernard Schmalzlers and they ship to the US. Top notch service too.
It is going to have to be SnuffStore.co.uk or Rejeks.de. Mars has only one kind and I think they are the only ones that have any in the US. I love Bernard schmalzers like zwiefacher and 275 Jahre Jubiläums and I would like to try the Pöschl ones someday when I can spend the money for a Rejekes order.
Is there any kind of issue with shelf life? (Before I impulse order… I’ve already spent $120 on tobacco today.)
Nothing in particular, obviously they are at the moist end of the spectrum so good housekeeping is important: store in an airtight environment and if you use a snuff box just put in what you need for the day. Snuffstore is widely used by most of us and I’ve not had anything apart from decent fresh snuff from Tim.
I have a tin of Bernard Aecht Altbayerischer that is still as fresh as the day I bought it last October. I am sure glad most of my talk about snuff is typed instead of oral. I can’t pronounce half these names
I struggle to type them, having fingers like bananas and all
Ok, so it’s a done deal as soon as someone tells me what I should order first. I like: Strong scents and flavors. Think Peaty Scotch and socks that have been worn three days in a row (HDT. Yeah, I went there.)
I think you do that bit by logging onto the site.
^^ What? (Sorry, I’m a bit thick at this time of night.) Well I’ll be damned. And my wife is going to kill me, but I ordered MORE tobacco today, and it included schmalzlers from snuffstore. I also came across a bunch of snuffs that I don’t see on mr snuff or nicotine rush, which are the places I alternate orders from, so I pulled the trigger, and like I said, my wife will probably shoot me. But I will have delicious snuff in my nose when she does, so I guess that’s ok. I have been enjoying the hell out of WoS Honey Menthol. In fact, much to the detriment of the other 30 or 40 snuffs I have in my possession right now. So I was prety amazed when I found Samuel Gawith Honey. The best part about honey menthol is the honey, and I’d been wishing for a honey snuff with no menthol. Can’t. Wait.
zonesix, Up until a few weeks ago, I was a schmalzler virgin too. I just “manned up” and ordered one of every Bernard snuff (12) available at the snuff store. There are like 2 I’m not super fond of because they are a litte too perfumey, but in general, I’m now a schmalzler convert. Amorstrinha, Brasil, Jubiliaums, and Wies Blau are a few of my favorites. In fact, even though I don’t need it, I just placed an order from rajeks because I wanted to try the Poschl, Sternecker and a few other Bernard Schmalzlers I haven’t tried.
Good to know snuffegnugen! I didn’t man up like THAT, but I definitely overdid it today. I’ll report back soon.
Yeah, an OCD level obsession with trying new snuff and disposable income don’t mix well. Hope you enjoy the schmalzler’s you ordered though. Took a little over a full week to get my order from England to AZ.
That’s not bad. Usually takes me 4 days to get packages to Wisconsin from Florida. Plus, that’s a big ocean there. Don’t get me started on disposable income. That’s something I had before I got married.
@zonesix: Samuel Gawith’s Honey is mentholated I’m afraid to report, although it’s not as pronounced as the menthol in the Wilson’s.
Schmalzler’s are mostly what I use these days.
I have a thread about swapping Schmalzler - but thought I would also drop a line here. Two 100g bags of Schmalzler, one Brazil A (the blue band) and one Südfrucht. Please whisper me if you’re interested. Swap for some dry snuff, Scotch, F&T, or?
I love Wilsons Toasts! WIll check reviews out, and get back to you!
Hi Pieter. Yes the address is correct. No? I have no idea what NTSU is? Thanks - sounds very interesting :o) Mr Niko
I’m getting an order together that includes the following Bernard Schmalzlers, which I’ve read good reviews on and which I think are significantly different from one another : Zwiefacher Brasil Feinst Brasil Doppelt Fermentiert Aecht Altbayerischer You opinions would be most welcome on this. Thanks, in advance. Z
Some good stuff in your order Z-2k Specially the Doppelt Fermentiert
I have had the Zwiefacher and the Brasil Feinst so far. The Zwiefacher is my favorite of the two it is lightly mentholated so it is easy to use all day. It is not hard to use a 10g in 2 days. I thought the Brasil Feinst was nice on taste but being so coarse it did not stay in the nose so I deem it just OK. May I suggest Klostermischung which I find a bit more flavorful than Brasil Feinst and does not have menthol either. I would not use any of them with my best shirt on because they can be messy. Happy snuffing.
While Klostermischung it excellent, its technically not a shmalzler. Though I recommend it. Having those 4 schmalzlers will give you a rounded sense of what they are all about as you have figured out. I don’t think there is a great deal of flavor variations in the two Brasil ones, its more of a grind difference as I recall. I think Zwiefacher achieves the marriage of snuff and schmalzler just right, which is why the couple on the box are so happy to be together! When I first tasted this (just a couple of days ago) I said wow, this is what Pöschl should be! Now before I get in trouble, I will say that Pöschl’s true schmalzlers are outstanding, and if you are ordering from Germany, they are worth getting.
The Alt Offenbacher Kostlich is one of MY favorites from Bernard but the Kownoer gets reordered soon too. That’s a good order though, I would snuff that.
Klostermischung is a Schmalzler@Xander: Bernard considers Klostermischung a Schmalzler. Funny thing about Bernards: On the back of their tins, they list their website as www.schmalzerfranzl.de, they spelled “Schmalzler” wrong! You have to type in www.schmalzlerfranzl.de. Talk about embarassing!
I’ve got: BERNARD’s: Klostermischung, Aecht Altbaperischer, 275 Jahre Jubiläums, Brasil Doppelt-Fermentiert, Zwiefacher, Feinster Kownoer and Alt-Offenbecher Kostlich POSCHL’s : Schmalzler A and Südfrucht. I love them all but if I may only pick one, it will be Klostermischung.
At Nicotine Rush: Jaxons Red Bull Bernards Brasil Feinst delikat Brasil Fresco Rassig Aecht altbayerischer Schmalzler Klostermischung Brasil Doppelt Fermentiert Polar Prise Amostrinha Zwiefacher Schmalzler Jubilaums Alt Offenbacher Köstlich Feinster Kownoer JH Wilsons Medicated No.99 Snuff Large Ttin SP No.1 Snuff Large Tin Top Mill No.1 Snuff Pocket Box
That sneaky monk! He says snuff “schnupftabak” on his tin! Your link takes me to the shop and Klostermishumg is indeed under schmalzler, but under “snuff” is Weiss-Blau Schmalzler. Its good though…
Now I’m on the main site and going through the gallery. Its under schmalzler there too. So be it.
Got some Brasil Fresco that came in a plastic bag. The snuff had kind of balled up about the size of an asprin pill, (maybe it comes this way?) and for a while I broke it up and snuffed it up. After a while I thought it may be nice to just stuff two balls in each nostil and Then squash them. Then I’m sitting there with a massive double dose-vey nice!!
I just got klosrrmischung and it rocks but after five minutes I get a grawgy slash burning sensation in my throat and is very uncomfortable and I have to spit it out. What is wrong with me ? How do I indulge in a shmalzler without this happening? Should I let some dry and grind it up finer? I’m sure someone here has dealt with this issue and it would be great if someone can shed some light on the subject .
I’m surprised that you are having this problem as it is an easy snuff to take. The only advice I can give is don’t dry it out and grind it finer, that would make your problem even worse.
Sounds like you are inhaling too hard. Schmalzler is the easiet snuff to take. Whatever you do DON’T re-grind it. Just lighten your sniff.
@Nosechaw954: I also have some Klostermischung and I find it a wonderfully satifying snuff. No after effects for me. It’s a pity you’re having problems with this jewel.
When I do it I don’t feel any discomfort it’s after five minutes it grawgs the he’ll out of me and I gotta cough it out, it’s a shame cause it tastes so good but that feeling is stopping me from murdering this 7 gram container in ten minutes. I’m using a bullet cause otherwise it falls out of my nose , think drying and drying some would atleast take away the delayed drip and disolve faster?
Drying and grinding*
@Nosechaw954: Take smaller ‘pinches’, and change your snuffing technique so that you don’t get it up in the top of your nose. Try taking the snuff outdoors and see if you can reduce the amount you need to take to get satisfaction from it. I find that snuffing indoors, particularly in an air-conditioned envoronmen,t really reduces the scent of snuff, and so I was struggling to get the scent like I get outdoors by taking more snuff…and suffering the sinus and troat issues you describe.
It’s so hard to take a small amount when u don’t feel it going in !I thought shmalzelers are supposed to be ingested in large amounts. I don’t see how keeping it inside the nose will provide a sufficiant nicotine dose for me . So am I supposed to make a nose plug of this stuff and not let it reach to deep? Like a nose quid instead of blast or pinch. Nothing else does this to me, I can rail rooster all day long and love the drip but the shmalzler drip feels like I swallowed a box jelly fish by accedent and it got stuck in my upper throat than I freak out and cough and spit franticly.I’ll try smaller pinches and see what it does
Ok, you should be aware, that Schmalzler is far shorter to be kept in the nose. Depends on how high your tolerance is (until secretion starts). So, if you keep snuff for about 8 minutes in, use Schmalzler for half of this time. Schmalzler is much less taken for nicotine, as it´s a bit of a poor performer there. It´s the excellent, deep flavouring that makes it worthwhile. One thing I always do, when taking Schmalzler is pressing the nose wings together. There´s far less of it falling out of the nose then.
@ Nosechaw: Red Star has some good advice there. I will add that I would avoid a bullet to take schmalzler. I happen to use a spoon with about a 1/4 inch diameter bowl. With this you can kind of pack it in instead of snifing it in all the way. Also I will sniff them off of the back of my thumbnail. They tend to make my nose run like mad, so like you I can get a nasty drip (almost all Pöschl snuffs have this effect on me no matter what I do) so you need to blow just as you feel it start to creep back to where it gets stuck in the drippy area. Eventually you will find what works for you, it takes a little practice. Also be aware that all schmalzlers are different, and other ones might be easier. Klostermischung is actually a schmalzler-snuff hybrid. Good luck, let us know how you progress!
Great info thanks , I did notice I start to leak from my nose uncontrolaby after a few minutes than I blow it out thinking I need more since I just got rid of it all so I do more . And at that point after I do more and my nose run again I suck in hard to swallow whatever is in my nose and that’s when the all he’ll breaks loose. Ok so now I know shmalzer is all play and no business. That’s something for me to consider .
Nosechaw, I can see how you want to sniff a bit harder when you have a heavier, thicker snuff like schmalzlers, just to get er in there, trying to get it far enough up to keep it from falling out. I do that too from time to time. I’ve gotten better results ,if I have some in the morning, by flushing my nose out first, and when that heavy snuff hits the inside it seems to melt right down and stay put. Then I can sit there and enjoy that rich flavor over a STRONG cup of coffee. (Also , sticking your nose over a steaming cup of coffee seems to liven up the fermented, chocolate, type of smell-damn, it’s NICE!!!) Doing schmalzlers with a dry nose has always been more of a challenge for me. Like I said, sometimes I just pack my nose with balled up schmalzler, kick back with a cold one, and then add some plain type snuffs when I need a little kick-with that heavy, nice flavor just hovering all the time in the background. Whatever you do, don’t give up on Schmalzler!!! Just, think of alternate ways to use it if one way doesn’t work–Luck to you!
Got it down know ,just go easy and blow nose often. If there ever was a good snuff to dip it would be klostermisLchung but would be a waste to use it in that manor since a ten gram tin would give u only 2 or 3 decent plugs.
