I’m hoping some of the more experienced snuffers can give me a little advice. Last week I received a bunch of schmalzlers, a style of snuff I’ve never tried before. The first schmalzler I tried was Poschl’s Sud Frucht, and it was one of the best snuffs I ever tried. I only wish I had purchased more. Yesterday I opened up a four-ounce package of Poschl’s Schmalzler “A” and thought it was singularly the worst snuff I have ever tried. Unlike the Sud Frucht, which was moist and unctuous to the point of being gooey, this Schmalzler A is dry to the point of being not quite dessicated. And while there is some kind of flavor to it, it is very vague, weak, and not at all pleasant–at least to me. It also has a very strong burn component to it, and not a very pleasant burn; it’s the only snuff that has ever caused me to sneeze profusely. In the package it was a brick and I had much trouble getting it broken up so that it could be snuffed. I couldn’t use my silver spoon as I was afraid I was going to bend it; it took a regular spoon in a coffee cup and some doing to break it up. It reminded me of breaking up dry dirt clods in the garden. Question: My guess is that I bought a bad bag of snuff. But since we all have different tastes, before I complain I’d like to know if this is the way this snuff is supposed to be; I’ve found taste to be a very subjective thing. I have had several snuffs now that I think are terrible yet other people really like them. With this in mind, is this snuff supposed to be anywhere close to the way I describe it?
Sounds like it might have dried out although I haven’t had the pleasure of using that schmalz yet but they are supposed to be pretty moist. When I received my other poschl schmalzlers I moved them outta of the baggie and into something else
No, you got an old dryed out batch. The green label should be semi moist to the point it stick to your spoon when you turn it up side down . The scent should be of dates, the gold label scent is more like raisins. Store in air tight dark glass jars in a cool location. As moist as the day I opened it.
Thanks so much to both of you. I thought this was the case. But before I return something, I want to make sure it’s really defective and not merely a good product that I don’t like. If this stuff is supposed to taste like dates–that is, anything like F&T’s Old Paris–there is definitely something wrong with it.
@Dunnyveg you can totally trust basement_shaman with his text. there was something wrong with your package and you should give it a second try with another (hopefully fresher) package. a good idea would be to buy 25g sacket, normally they are even tighter the the bigger packs.
I agree. The 25g packets, though not as economical, are sealed really well. All is for naught though if there is a hole in the pouch (25g or 100g).
