I was very excited to find my package from Mr Snuff waiting for me this morning, I recently ordered some F&T Old Paris, WoS Grand Cairo, Crumbs Of Comfort and Lavender, Poschl President, 6 Photo Anarkali and Bernard Brasil Doppelt Fermentiert. I’ve so far sampled everything bar Old Paris, Grand Cairo, Anarkali and President (I want to make sure my ‘palette’ is clear before sampling each, rather than shovelling the whole bang shoot up my snout), and deduced the following: WoS CoC is delicious, and I TOTALLY understand why it has so many devotees…yum! WoS Lavender (or at least my tin) doesn’t seem to have much lavender in it at all…maybe it will come forward after a couple of days open on and off. The Bernard Schmaltzler is INCREDIBLE-as close as I’ve ever come to the fantasy snuff I have in my mind’s eye-thanks so much to everyone who recommended this to me. It’s an exquisite snuff, and a monumental experience-absolutely gorgeous. The aroma brings to mind eating freshly homebaked fig rolls in a dewy morning forest, which develops into an exposion of fruit, dates, moist tobacco and just JOY in general. My wife, who introduced me to snuff in the first place, tried the Doppelt Fermentiert for the first time with me, and is now obsessed with it. Top drawer snuff to say the least!! Roll on tomorrow and plenty of Grand Cairo, Anarkali, Old Paris and President…and, I’m sure, more Schmaltzler…
Sounds good! If you’re after a lavender hit, I can highly recommend Toque’s offering. It’s heavily flavoured, but avoids the soapiness one might expect from a lavender.
toque lavender is top notch. bernards stuff is quite always amazing, I have klosternischung, feinst and zweifacher and love them.
Yes I love the Bernards as well, but when I take them I have to blow my nose at least 5 minutes after that and often get some tobacco somewhere onto my shirt or into my face. Do you experience the same?
Wearing a dark shirt and having a beard helps.
Glad you enjoy it as much as I do!
I have to blow after 5 min. too but it can not stop me from taking it --actually, it stopped me from taking it in public, packed places when i am without something to drink. Everytime i have good Schmalzers in my nose, i need something to shallow the throat-drip, which is a gruesome thing in some Schmalzers. Anyone else see´s this in the same way ?
@Prismaster, yes very much so. But some of them are make less mess on me than others. I avoid using them in crowded places though. If I started going to pubs again, I think I would want to bring them with me. Must pack extra hankies.
@Xander Extra hankies is the way to go for sure in case you want to use them outside in public places. I find for example, the classic Altbayrischer Schmalzer from Bernhard is one which cause my nose to run and run - no chance without a hankie. The damn thing on the whole topic is that fact that for me it is awesome to use Schmalzer when i am drunk. I would love to take the Bernhard´s or even the big packs from Pöschl to the pub but it would be a huge mess and i would get even more funny looks the usual --which could be fun.
Sternecker makes lovely schmaltzlers. Echt and Straubinger are lovely. But I find that I lose the sense of the flavour of it quite quickly and so don’t use them all the time. When I do it’s a real treat.
Thanks for the tip! I’ve put a Straubinger in my cart at Mr. Snuff for my next purchase. I have never seen the Sternecker name before…
The Echt is the most ‘schmaltzlery’ tasting, my favourite ahead of Bernard’s etc. The Straubinger is less strongly schmaltzler flavoured, very subtle and delicious. Flavours improve with a touch of airing, starts a bit bland but develops. Sternecker is said to almost a one man outfit.
I’m blown away by the Regensburger Pris I received today. It smells just like a good quality aromatic pipe tobacco. The throat drip is a bit excruciating, but worth putting up with so far. I’m a little irked by the tap-box, however!
Get it decanted into a jar…
Love Bernards Klostermischung(sp?), would like to try the Aecht Alt but it seems to sell out too fast. Would the Amostrinha(sp?) be considered a schmalzler?
Amostrinha is a nice smokey schmalzler with camphor.
@Juxtaposer I personally dont think that Amostrinha is a Schmalzer.
OK, I mean I have it and have taken it more than a couple of times, but it seemed like it would be maybe in another category, a little more like the more popular Poschls as far as texture etc.
Prismaster you sent that out just as I was typing here, you must get what I’m saying!
@Prismaster I use the term loosely as meaning German oiled snuff.
Gotcha.
