Scent difference outdoors vs in?

Hi All, Still a relative newbie but I have found that my perception of the intensity of a snuff seems to be wildly different when outdoors. Sometimes while inside, I can barely perceive any flavor at all but if I take a step outside the flavor is apparent. Is my indoor air that bad? Is it a function of temperature or scent fatigue?

It is a normal thing, and many people enjoy the “second wind” their snuff gives them when they step out. I have found it’s an interesting way to peel back the layers of complexity of some blends. Scent notes that dominate indoors may mask other notes that somehow come forward in cooler outdoor air.

Fresh air works wonders with snuff, as @cpmcdill said.  Even when it’s freezing outside I keep two windows open slightly to get a nice cross breeze of fresh air…for when I can’t step outside.

Yeah I noticed my home blend with a percentage of fire cured smells like chocolate when u go outside, it’s great

It is weird.  Pretty cool, but weird.  I think the effect is even more pronounced while in a moving car with the windows down or standing outside with a brisk wind blowing.

Does anyone have clear handle on why it happens?  Is it the quality of the air, as some suggest?  Is it the breezes and moving air?  Is it the coolness of the air?

My guess is that, just as the pupils of the eyes respond to changes in the intensity of light, the nose knows when one is outdoors and on the move, and awakens more olfactory receptors. The effect seems more pronounced in cool outdoor air, but I’ve felt a difference going outside into warm air from an air conditioned space as well, so it’s not strictly about air temperature.

I like that theory.  An actual physiological response from moving from consistent, still, indoor air to active, moving, inconsistent outdoor air.  Or possibly an automatic intensifying of the brain’s focus on the olfactory sense…

Not sure how to get the quoting to work so @markstinson said

Now we know why the NASCAR guys use chaw

Well I can attest it’s not the quality of the air but moving air definitely helps and the reason for that should be fairly obvious. What’s not so obvious to me is why cool air works so much better than warm air unless the reason is that cool air blends with the warm air in the nostrils and creates moisture which releases that much more scent from the snuff.

That makes sense… Mark

I think it also has a lot to do with humidity. The moisture in the air acting as a solvent aromatizing the snuff.

Also moving air will certainly help this via difusion

I agree with Snifs, at least for me, its the humidity. I usually just use so so snuff when indoors, I don’t get much flavor from them. If I’m going outside I reach for something yummy. The more warm and humid, the better for me. The warm part could change now that it finally got cool here. I am a newish snuffer and I honestly didn’t get much beyond smoke, menthol, and/or a nic hit until I figured out the outdoors thing.

If it was the humidity I would be in the best location for snufffing. Although I suspect from the name PalmettoMan is in the Glades somewhere… On a cool dry day I get the best results. On hot humid days which is most of the year here I hardly get anything.

No Glades anywhere near South Carolina, but I am a few miles from Hell Hole Swamp.

I believe it go back to primitive survival instinct . while resting at home the senses rest. when you go out your hunting senses kick in. If you ever hunted deer there is a time when your adrenaline kicks in right before you take your shot. buck fever phenomenon heart rates can jump up to 200 bpm.

@basement_shaman when I read your comments I thought about the concrete jungle

I notice the biggest difference in winter. Today I took a pinch before a walk out in the cold, when I stepped outside the flavor really hit me.
