Sandalwood

I got this snuff in today and here goes: The box is the same as the G&H 10g boxes which need care taken to not build a mountain on your hand. The snuff inside is med brown and med grind. I found its weight to be similar to Toque Original and it had a bright smell to it when I made my little pile. As the name would suggest it was certainly sandalwood and the air around me instantly smelled nice and clean. It’s slightly more moist than med too and very easy to take. There were a few little clumps that I had to break up but a good shake cured that for now. Taking a bump in each nostril provided a good hearty burn. The burn was akin to G&H SP or SG Top Mill but lasted a bit longer and not as strong of a burn as Kendal Brown. The sandalwood scent is so forward that I wondered if it were pure sandalwood powder. It feels nice in the nose though, kinda like F&T French Charotte but it’s lacking the earthy tobacco undertones. It’s a relaxing snuff as the scent reminds me of being clean and fresh with nary a thing to do. The first few pinches got the waterworks flowing but rest assured there is absolutely no loss of scent/flavor when you blow it out. This has very good staying power like the F&T snuffs I’ve had. The scent lingers a long time and it’s pure sandalwood. I don’t get anything really notable about the tobacco base, in fact I can barely detect it. I think that this would be enhanced if I mixed it with something nice and musty like taxi comes to mind but I don’t have any left. I think that I’ll try to mix it with Red Crest eventually even thought that’s not musty it’s got a dry-cigar smell to it that would work nicely with this. Nic level? Well I’m wearing a hat and haven’t found the desire to remove it yet so I’d say the nic is low. That being said I’ve had two Sterk snus portions today and a few pinches of G&H SP so it’s difficult to discern. Would I reorder? No. Mainly because I’ll have this one for a long time. A well balanced snuff bar would have a sandalwood snuff in it but this isn’t one that I couldn’t live without. As a post-note it’s a clear snuff, and by that I mean that it hasn’t plugged me up at all. I usually get real stopped up if I take a good amount of pinches in rapid succession or any just about any new snuff. This one has kept me open but I have to say it’s VERY sandalwood without much tobacco to speak of.

As stated in other reviews, I am sure that the Atherthons brand is simply Gawith Hoggarth rebranded. Reading over the GH Sandalwood reviews, I see they are less than favorable. This particular snuff is pretty good though. The sandlwood fragrance is strong, but not overpowering as it is in the QWS Sandalwood. It seems very natural, and also seems a natural fit for the Gawith Hoggarth standard snuff grind. There is nothing sweet about this sandalwood as there are in the French Carotte snuffs. This one seems quite woody or herbal. The snuff gives a bit of nose burn and moderate discharge, but its not unpleasant in anyway. The scent is not for everyone, but its worth a try. I’m sure I’ll like the GH version when I get around to it.
