Samuel Gawith

Ive only tried a few of the products in their line, but so far I’ve found that the tap boxes haven’t been too bad although now I’m ready to order 25g containers of theirs. I fell in love with Richt Kind and was disappointed to see its not available in 25g containers at least from mrsnuff and I like the honey especially as a mixer while the Kendal brown and mas ruin both make for great changes of pace though I’m not particularly enthused about them. Before I buy more of anything in 25 g containers I would like to know any recommendations and how the black coffee compares to toques espresso. I’m also intrigued by Scotch black and would appreciate any opinions on it or any other SG products. If anyone could point to a snuff similar to Richt kind I would appreciate that too.

The black coffee is much darker and coarser than Toque, with a much more pronounced coffee scent. It’s a nice snuff, although the SGs that I’ve tried all remind me of cloves, and I can only take them now and again.

Trying the KB original from a tap box, then from a new 25g tin- I can say, big difference! I’d definitely say get anything that you want in a tin if you can, I wish now that I didn’t have so many tap boxes, even though many of them were first time purchases. It’s justifiable to buy them in the tin, don’t feel guilty or anything, I wouldn’t buy an opened beverage.

CCC ,also of S.Gawith is Rich Kind, with a bit of clove.Personally I prefer CCC but you have to like clove.

I like the idea of a more pronounced cofee scent and a coarser grind. I love Mac’s clove so Richt kind with a hint of it sounds pretty good. Thanks the reason. I’m making inquiries before buying 25 g tins is that even 10 g. Is a lot if I’m not to into the snuff although 25 g tins aren’t much if I’m really into it. If I could be sure of what I was getting I’d order Grand Cairo in bulk in a heartbeat.

I love Ma’s Ruin, it was one of the first snuffs that really turned me on. I have a couple SGs in bulk: Honey, and Vanilla. I really like them both. The Vanilla, though, be warned – it’s really dark and has a tendency for me anyway to make my nostrils look like huge caves in my face! Really. Big black holes right in the middle of my face. I’ve learned not to use that stuff when I’m going to be in public, because keeping my appearance up can really get away from me.

I haven’t tried any of the ones you’ve expressed an interest in, unfortunately. For sure, I can never seem to try enough different snuffs. Added to my wish list…

Now I’m going to dig around in my drawer and see if I can’t find that tapper of Ma’s Ruin I know I have in there…

i just received SG’s Honey today … and I am with ddavelarsen, it is a nice snuff.

SG Hazelnut, just received today as well … is fantastic … a bit sweet, like a Toblerone …

SG is one of my favorite snuffs and pipe tobacco manufactures The black coffee is just one daily must have and the scotch black has a nice burn with good tobacco taste . KB original has a light citrus scent and good tobacco taste. Elmo’s reserve is like the 1792 flake IMO a nice tonquin bean scent and not too moist, like the flake you can’t get enough. The raspberry is strongly scented and stick with you a long long while. Peppermint dark is moist very refreshing and cool unlike Wild duck dry fine grind .Menthol dark is perfect balance tobacco to menthol also moist. The guarana is more on the soap floral spectrum side; light brown medium grind slightly dry, OK for a pick me up but I crash hard if used all day.Vanilla has a good tobacco taste with very light almost unnoticeable scent.I will have to check my nose caves too funny. One cold morning my friend thought I had a nose bleed. The only one I refuse to buy is the grouse more I don’t like it in a pipe it smells better than it tastes unless they use a different base tobacco for the snuff but I would have to try a sample first then go with any review . update; Dried and grind some grousemore this morning found it tasty with a light apricot scent

I’ve never really got it with SG, but their Irish and SP are very tasty snuffs.

I also don’t really get on with SG - I have Kendal M and Special Gold for the occasional pinch, all the others I have tried have gone in the bin! However, I do reckon that their Black Rappee is the best no-nonsense plain tobacco I have yet found - might have something to do with liking Latakia mixtures years ago when I smoked a pipe.

@basement_shaman: SG Grousemoor snuff is completely different from SG Grousemoor pipe mixture which is still rather different from SG Grousemoor Plug.  Just a heads up, don’t let the name turn you off.  The snuff is a mix of leathery scents with floral aromas, none of the fruity twist you get from the pipe tobaccy.

@Mr. Nose I think I will just grind up the pipe tobacco it is nice in the nose

I’ll certainly have to sample more of their line. From what I gather a lot of the flavors let the tobacco shine through. Richt kind is nothing like that but it’s one of a few candy kind of snuffs that I like.

SG Cherry is quite good and has a long lasting scent

SG is lovely snuff IMHO

Unscented red, yellow, blue crests, London Brown, Black Rappee.
Scented: SP 1, Kendal Brown (regular), Afterglow, Zip (A darker richer O&G), and Elmo’s Reserve (nose candy)

would be a good start. Frankly, I’ve never tried an SG that I didn’t like. It’s about the only line I think I can say that about.

What are their SPs like compared to say, J&h or Wilson’s of Sharrow? Are the unscented more along the lines of J&Hs SP no 1?

SP 1 I would say think of WoS Grand Cairo with more tobaccoeyness and less bergamot. The Crests are in a class by themselves. They have almost the consistency of a HDT with a base smell some describe as haylike, but I rather think of as a “fresh hamster bedding” smell. The London and Rappees etc, are very coarse, very moist, very dark and very addictive in spite of being messy. I hope this helps.

Thanks. I’m starting to be interested in the plainer side of SP since I tried J&H’s SP No. 1. I have to say some of my favorite snuffs are really messy and I wish they weren’t. Best Dark and Schmalzers I use almost exclusively at home. I’ll definitely look into some of the more tobaccoey side of SG’s line. I find that SPs are the best at clearing my nose and I think it has something to do with the usually minimalistic flavoring and fine consistency.

Just tried Yellow Crest and it is quite nice. A lot like J&H SP no 1, another favorite. I agree with the description of the scent although Id add that it’s more pleasant than it might sound… I find it quite refreshing and smooth.

Of the three Crests, I like the Red best. It is a little coarser than the Yellow and I think it shows how naturally sweet tobacco can be.
