Samuel Gawith

Quick Question: Does Samuel Gawith do a toast ? if so, which one, and is it any good?

Well, their Irish D Original is a toast and is excellent. That’s my toast of the moment. Precision is needed but not too “dangerous” snuff. Recommended.

Thank-You

The Irish D Light is too. I read this has some recipe connection to F&T HDT, but I may be wrong.

Irish D Original and Light. Not too keen on either. F&T HDT toast and Toque Natural Toast are my favourites these days.

@sandy130674, I’m with you. I also love Toque Lime Toast

The Irish D Light has a sweetness to it. I can’t place the flavour, but it is interesting.

Their Irish D Light is made from plain tobacco and according to PhilipS was the original Fribourg and Treyer High Dry Toast before Wilsons of Sharrow bought the recipes on the company’s demise. The Irish D Original is made from toasted tobacco. Both are outstanding snuffs, the Original in particular.

What I wonder about the Samuel Gawith snuffs…do they sell them in a bigger size than 10g but a smaller size than the tubs?

^ I’ve only seen those standard 10g plastic dispensers online and offline.

They can supply them in the same 25g tins they use for G Smith and Sons snuffs but I think you have to order them direct from the mill. Here’s an old price list from 2001 which mentions 25g, 250g and 500g drums.

10g “tap boxes”, 25g tins (still much like those which they used to supply to G Smith & Son), and drums of either 250g or 500g (same size drum used for both!). The 250g of Black Coffee I received today is immaculate; moist, fluffy, rich … bliss!

Oh - and on the original question: SG Irish D - a good, honest, slightly “smokey” HDT SG Irish D Light - VERY pale, slightly less smokey, slightly “nutty” - Irish D Light is a real delight. As others have suggested, there is some similarity between Irish D Light and Fribourg & Treyer’s HDT (High Dry Toast) which is also an excellent snuff.

I love toasts but I really don’t like SG Irish D Light. It’s the only toast I don’t like.
