Samuel Gawith taken over by Gawith Hoggarth

Maybe it’s common knowledge out there, but I was surprised to see that Samuel Gawith has apparently been taken over by Gawith Hoggarth. The former link to S. Gawith leads to an updated G. Hoggarth website which has a list of S. Gawith snuffs still available (in somewhat uneasy company with G. Hoggarth and Poschl products). What this means for the S. Gawith snuff-mill is not clear - I assume that G. Hoggarth will produce all S. Gawith snuffs in the future and one would hope this meant keeping the original S. Gawith equipment. I can see the economic sense in merging these two venerable snuff-makers (given the modern EU/UK tendency to tax everything into oblivion), and I absolutely wish all the best to G. Hoggarth, but this is still a sombre moment in UK snuff history for all S. Gawith afficionados.

That sounds like grim news. Unless GH makes the SG snuffs on their old, venerable equipment, I can only imagine that they will be transformed into more mainstream concoctions. In my opinion, the SG standards like Kendal Brown, Black Rappee, and similar  snuffs are what sets them apart, and above, almost all the other makers. The exception is De Kralingse, as their snuffs are old school, and not designed or marketed for 20-something persons(no offense to anyone of that generation).

According to several pipe sites; SG and GH are now using the same building. GH’s building was partly unused so SG moved/is moving their equipment and people to the unused section. The old SG building will be turned into a museum, So they claim. They also claim both lines will continue as before.

When WoS took over production of F&T I assume it was a bumpy ride. Anyone have negative feelings about that? Anyone still pine for Masulipatam? If so, anyone still hoarding some and willing to share?

Despite the highly optimistic and positive tone of the Pipesmagazine article, I’d say this is still a major issue for the snuff-taker, since the SG range has been considerably reduced. A quick count shows 28 S.Gawith snuffs no longer on the revised list on the G.Hoggarth website… I’ll put the list on a separate thread once I’ve recovered from this realisation.

I don’t know if anyone has noticed yet (not seen mention in other threads) but GH’s website shows that they are now using the same tins as SG :-bd But they’re still both using the crappy tap box for the smaller quantities /:slight_smile:

The Pipe Shop? I have dealt with them before. Good service, although the owner couldn’t half rattle on :-@ (coming from me, that’s really saying something) I have found some of the GH stuff does dry out a bit in those tubs, but they do rehydrate easily, and at least they don’t get stuck and rust like some others  I think moving to the vac tins is a big leap in the right direction

SWS was actually the reason I used them  I believe he knows Johnny personally. I haven’t used them since I shied away from the artisan snuffs, but it looks like SWS is the bulk of their snuff line up these days.

Hi! Came across this forum and saw a few posts relating to Gawith’s that are rather ‘off the mark’ so wanted to set things straight.

Back in 2015 Gawith Hoggarth was approached to buy the business of Samuel Gawith (not the Kendal Brown house building, just the brands and business side). Basically Samuel Gawith’s would have disappeared if we had not taken it over, it did very little by way of sales in the UK and was struggling.

Some of the machinery and quite a few of the staff came over to the Gawith Hoggarth factory. There was definitely no ‘un-used section’ but we slotted the machinery and staff in.

The old SG building was sold to a printing company. We were never given the opportunity to purchase this. I believe the old mill machinery was sold to Holland but not sure. Other machinery and bits of pieces ended up in a local reclamation yard or in a skip, We were given a few bits and bobs.

7 years down the line and we have increased SG tobacco sales and still produce both SG and GH snuffs.

@gawithhoggarth is there any chance that sales have picked up enough to bring back products that have been taken off the market?

Possibly in the future we may look to bring back the odd one but whilst sales of snuff have picked up, they are still a very small part of our overall production. Plus as we move into the final stages of track and trace, many new regulations and logistic issues and with a move to a new factory, we are more looking to consolidate our product stock. Over the years a number of products were basically found to be very similar to others, just in different packaging and with different names.
