It says sp but I’ve heard it is very similar to Viking dark. Is this true?
to me, this is true … same rich dark grind, same smokiness. Very nice. It is an interesting brew of scent and texture.
I can’t compare, haven’t opened the Viking Dark yet, but I buy SP Scotch in bulk. It is very nice.
I would think not, but I have not sampled the Vikings yet. Just from reports I’ve read the V. Blonde sounds more like it.
I’ve only had SP Scotch in a tap box… but even still, it was good. I would say closer to Viking Blonde as well, having tried both. SP Scotch wasn’t very SP’y in my opinion.
SP Scotch? Now I’m confused.
I’ve got a tin in transit to my general area here, now you guys have made me more curious! Waiting…
On special $3.57 for 25g vac packed at senor Snuff. You’d be bonkers not to chuck one in whilst ordering!! I did. A couple of times…
For me it’s a kind of plain SP snuff, not very similar to Viking Dark. It’s not as dark as the Viking Dark, not as smoky (although it is a little bit smoky) and not as strong in nicotine. I think it is more like the Viking Blonde. I like it.
@ericthered Don’t be confused by “Scotch” in the name; its totally unrelated to American scotches. Presumably it was simply an SP that was favored in Scotland years ago not unlike SG’s Scotch Black (which is a rappee). SP Scotch is rather robust for an SP, coarser than most other ones also.
Honestly, I love this stuff. I’d love to know some some history (perhaps from @Xander?) of the Gawith Scotches. Gawith and Toque are my two favorite British companies. Gawith is so singular! Their grinds are almost always thick and fluffy. Initially, I didn’t like this, felt like they were just grinding up pipe tobacco…but stuff like SP Scotch, Sam’s Own (who says British menthols don’t have personality?!), and KB Original really turned it around for me. Their 25g tins are cheap, and beautifully packaged with the vacuum seal, and everything I’ve tried from them is top-notch. I’m not a big fan of Elmo’s Reserve, but just because the scent doesn’t agree with me…still a great snuff. Sp scotch is just a hell of a snuff. Really.
@insectman Sorry, I really don’t have any history. Read old and archived threads and get bits and pieces. The Snuffhouse Library section has a lot to offer also. You might also seek out some out of print books mentioned there. @PhilipS was our best source for history for awhile, but hasn’t posted lately. You can read lots of his old posts and learn a lot. Also SG has a pretty descent history written on their website, but not much about specific snuffs.
Placing this in my cart now. If its like Viking blond I am going to enjoy this one very much
I’ve never had any scotch from SG, but I have a theory that they may be the so called “brown scotches”. That means they are moistened scotches. But also they could just be a English rappees made the parisian method.
@xander, nobody is a bigger snuffhouse.org dork than me. I work night shift, and instead of studying or reading something productive, I have wasted hours reading the old posts. I saw the history on Gawith’s site, but it wasn’t enough…though it did lead me to try their delightful Dr. Very’s. What do you think of Gawith? I don’t ever remember you mentioning a preference…I know @Snuffster said he never “got,” them. The man makes brilliant snuff, his nose is much more qualified than mine in such matters, but I gotta say…Gawith is just magical. Another great snuff: 6 Photo Natural. Been using it all evening.

I would say that SP Scotch will definitely fit into the category of a “brown scotch”.
@insectman Yes, I’ve spent countless hours reading old threads as well. I think SG does some snuffs very well, and some snuffs they are the masters of. SPs and plain snuffs they do well, a few spicy ones they do well, and rappees and KBs they are the masters. Its got to be fresh though. Dried out tapboxes are no good. However, I think they do some snuffs very poorly. Most of that revolves around their scenting. Their fruit, floral, and many perfumed ones are pretty awful IMO. All the ones I have tasted have given me an “ick” feel and to me taste very artificial. I keep trying new ones though.
They make the worst fruit snuffs, some of their scented varieties are very questionable.
@xander, @cstokes See, I’m not a huge fan of fruit snuffs, so I wouldn’t know what they were like. I’m also not a fan of aromatics, for the most part. So I’d hardly be qualified to judge there, but I tried their Peach in an old tap box (I only buy their vacuum seal now) and found it absolutely repulsive. Air freshener with hints of rained-sogged cardboard. I usually use SPs, naturals, and menthols. I think Sam’s Own is one of the great menthols, and stuff like SP Scotch, KB Original, Dr. Very’s are kind of unparalleled.
