I opened a vacuum sealed tin of this and have really found it to be a lovely snuff. Cannot put it down, just a wondrful SP that is mild yet full of flavor. Anyone else tried this one lately?
Not in some time and not from a vacuum tin ever, but I agree its quite a distinctivly sweet SP. I’ve had one in my shopping cart for some time. The problem is I have too much in my shopping cart, but its hard to take anything out.
Yes, I have a tin on the go at the moment. Very tasty indeed. Also very similar to the new Viking Blonde from My Smoking Shop.
This one is so easy to take and just really is a nice overall experience.Great base tobacco. Is this in any way related to the J&H Top mill? I have only had dusty little box of it and cannot compare due to the quality differences.
@Whalen, I suppose it is a bit similar to the J&H, but like you I’ve only had that in the little dust box. It seems to me that the SG High Mill is a base for many of the of the SG snuffs. I’ve been using X Blend as my morning menthol this week, and other than the menthol and different flavors, it seems to be the same snuff.
The High Mill does have some bergamot so it isn’t quite the same as the J&H Top Mill. SG have released a plain version called SP No. 1 which is very similar to the Top Mill. Only place I know that stocks it is the Backy Shop:

The new Viking Blonde pretty well identical to High Mill.
Thanks for the replies. I guess I am going to have to put an order together so as to sample the Viking Blonde. Once in a while I crack open a can of snuff and just get a delightful surprise, and the SG SP1 High Mill is one of those, just so smooth and easy.
I hate to say it, but I think that very few on this side of the pond has ever had a fresh little tin of J&H, hence my question for those lucky enough to be near the source. I certainly enjoyed the little tin, fun to play with, but I never really got more than a hint of what may have once been a prideful snuff therein. The curse of less than hardy packaging.
I think the packaging of snuff in seal-able tubes, vacuum tins, and sealed plastic tubs has done more to enhance my snuffing more than any other development, especially being so far removed from the English snuffs. The bulk snuffs from Wilsons was a whole new world to me. Those snuffs were just so fresh. I would kill to have Vacuum sealed tins of the Snuff house blends.
A fantastic snuff, one of the few SGs that I ever bother to buy.
It is fantastic and a regular part of my rotation.
A year later than the last post, but I too really love this snuff. It has a deep flavor and the bergamont is just right, not too strong. Prior to receiving this tin, my favorite SP was Toque, now I have a new fave. And I really like the SG tins, they keep snuff a lot fresher for a lot longer than anyone else’s.
I bought this in 500g drum bulk just a few weeks ago. It is a lovely SP. More orangey than lemony and very easy to take. Easily an all day snuff.
I love Gawith’s new SP No.1, I think its only available from Black Swan and it is amazing.
@lunecat - My Tobacco Shop - their name - it does not belong to me! shows it in stock in various sizes: http://www.mysmokingshop.co.uk/index2.php?mod=mancats&man=84&sec=1123 Good luck Chris
@lunecat - my fault I should have checked the names properly but it has been a very long few weeks. I hope you manage to get your hands / nose on the new one.
Yeah the SG SP Top Mill was custom made on their request as a substitute for the J&H Wilson Top Mill, which Imperial only sells in little dried out boxes. I’d love to try it fresh once. I’m sure its good.
As much as i hate the fact that the J&H 25g are no longer in vac tins i have noticed (and ordered/used lots) that the small round tins of Top mill are very fresh. This would be a first for anyone who hadn’t had one of the old 25g vac tins that they used to produce. Wish they would put the Top Mill in a 25g tin for sale.
@BigNose Small round tins? Have those replaced the rectangular blue plastic boxes with the metal lids?
@BigNose Small round tins? Have those replaced the rectangular blue plastic boxes with the metal lids?
Yes, same as McCrystals, Wilson’s and other’s. Very fresh. They probably had 10 years worth made so they will be stale next year like the old blue rectangle tin’s.
Best get it while it still has some flavour, then! I’m in Yorkshire at the end of the week, so I foresee a trip to Black Swan…
My original post was about the “High Mill”, as I said, a delightful snuff. But now I am intrigued by the new “Top Mill”, if it is more like the J&H, then I would be interested, as I originally wrote, I doubt that a fresh little tin of J&H has ever made it over the pond. The sniff I had from that little slider tin was beyond dry and pathetic. The citrus being fresh is everything in these SP types.
