I bought a tin of this in a pub back in Britain, chiefly because of the odd name. When I took it, it made my head spin and caused extreme nausea. This was definitely NOT a nicotine buzz, it was more like when your head spins from drinking too much. As I had been drinking too much that night, I blamed the beer, but I tried it on two other occasions while sober as a judge, with the same results: head spinning and feeling like I was gonna throw up. The effect diminished over time, but lasted about three hours! I am very familiar with nicotine, and I am absolutley certain that it was not nicotine that did this to me. Needless to say, the rest of the tin went in the bin. I’m guessing it was something in the flavoring. Has anybody experienced this effect from this or any other snuff? And what on earth does ‘Richt Kind’ mean anyway?
And what on earth does ‘Richt Kind’ mean anyway? Richt Kind has been on Sam Gawith’s list as long as I’ve been taking snuff and doubtless long, long before. How it has survived remains a mystery although some people must like it. Speculating here, but Richt could refer to a person. At one time it was quite frequent for valued patrons to request tailor-made snuffs that were named after them or their fancy. We’ve seen it with Hardhams. Dr. James Robertson-Justice etc. Here we probably have a snuff created for a certain Mr (or Mrs) Richt, who have long since shuffled off their mortal coil, leaving the snuff as their sole epitaph.
I wonder if it made them sick too…
Someone probably spiked it with ruffies… Heh…
ammonia perhaps?
‘Richt’ I had assumed was ‘Right’. The Right Kind of snuff (in someone’s view).
@doctorbeat: Do you have any allergies? My first guess would be that you had an allergic reaction to one of the fragrance ingredients. It can happen even if you’ve never had any allergy symptoms in the past.
I do have a few allergies, but only to dust, pollen etc. Funny thing is, my allergies take the form of runny nose, wheezing etc, but this was completely different. I don’t know if maybe I had a reaction to an essential oil or something, but it was pretty unpleasant. Thinking about it now, a similar thing happened to me when I ate some alphabet letter candy (UK members will know what I mean) same symptoms. It must be some flavoring ingredient. Makes me wary of trying other flavors of snuff.
@bob: I very much doubt it was ammonia. There was no ammonia smell from this snuff, and I’ve taken other snuffs that reeked of ammonia hundreds of times.
probably some odd allergy to something in it. Which sometimes allergies can suck that bad. It’s not uncommon to be allergic to all kinds of chemicals including ones that wouldn’t harm anyone else.
…, who have long since shuffled off their mortal coil, leaving the snuff as their sole epitaph. --nice use of words
Philips little joke…
shuffled off their mortal coil … nice use of words They should be - they’re Shakespeare’s (Hamlet 3/1) To be or not to be … … For in that sleep of death what dreams may come When we have shuffled off this mortal coil, Must give us pause: there’s the respect That makes calamity of so long life …
‘Richt’ is Scots for ‘right’. Mind you, Sam Gawith are based in Cumbria, aren’t they? Maybe they use the odd Scots word there too.
I think Philips’s ‘Mr Right’ is a laugh.
“Richt” as I recall is also “right” in German which I took in high school, however as I also remember in German “Kind” means child (think “kindergarten”)…
Wish you said that sooner. I would have asked my father when I had him on the phone this evening since he speaks german. Also, yes allergies can pop in at the stangest times. I found out a few months ago that a certain store-brand of orange soda breaks me out in hives something terrible, but only that certain store-brand and only their orange soda. So never rule out freak allergies.
It’s Scotish - ‘right kind’. The ‘Oor Wullie’ type of dialect.
and this has to be either an allergy or an extremely bad contamination so maybe Gawith should be told.
Idk what makes you sick from it but I have a tap box of it since I couldnt find the vacuum sealed tins and I’m glad I took the gamble. Im not a menthol fan usually but it has just enough to bring out the flavor. It’s so saturated with fruitiness I can’t tell what’s what but it isn’t sugary. Sam gawith has never disappointed except for some tap boxes that dry out while still leaving some of the flavor. I can’t see myself making an order soon but I have my cart loaded with vacuum sealed tins from SG at the moment. I just wish richt kind was available in those tins on mr snuff. I might even recheck right now.
