Samuel Gawith recommendations

Hi everyone, a new member here with a first post. I’m relatively new to snuffing and so far have been using mostly Pöschl snuffs and schmalzlers. I like especially like their Perlesreuter and Löwen-Prise which I often mix 50/50 as my daily snuff. It’s a good mix but to be honest it’s getting a bit boring. I decided to try some British snuffs for a change and ordered some SG Kendal Brown Original and Black Coffee. They are definitely high quality products and but I just can’t get over the smokiness in both of them. The smokiness for me makes the experience a bit stale and stuffy. Is there a SG offering with similar moistness/grind but without the smokiness? I don’t mind the dark tobacco base as I’m a great fan of Perlesreuter for example. Any pointers are welcome and appreciated!

Try SG blue crest, sg afterglow and all of snuffstore snuff except for the coffee one and black magic, theyre deliciously smoky. Actually, try them anyway, the smokiness in those 2 happen to be what makes them unique. Welcome to the forum.

Try the SG - KB scented. One of my favoutes. Also the wild duck if you like peppermint.

Nearly all the good SG snuffs have a smokiness to them except the crests and the fruity ones which taste extremely artifical (not the crests, the fruity ones). I’d say give the Crests a try all others people have mentioned have that smokiness you don’t like. Oh and dark tobacco snuffs have a smokiness or leatheryness to them, the ones you mentioned are only dark because of the sauseing technique used to make them which hides much of the tobacco flavor. You seem to enjoy the German schmalzlers so you should give Bernard snuffs a try they make a bunch of excellent ones and Sternecker makes more plain schmalzlers so you should give them a try too.

Thanks for the tips, I’ll give the Crests a try. They seem very interesting. How do the scented SG ones; aniseed, apple, carnation etc. really compare to for example the Pöschl snuffs? Pöschl snuffs of course being artificial with barely any base tobacco scent. Are the SG scented ones as “low quality”, what’s the intensity of the scent in them?

You know how apple flavoured sweets/candy doesn’t really taste of apple but something synthetic that could vaguely be described as apple? Same deal with the SG fruity snuffs, and I find they tend to clash with the tobacco base rather than cover it or work with it. The Gin & Tonic, and Hazlenut, and other scented ones work significantly better than their fruity ones IMHO

I also don’t like the smokiness you get from Kendal Brown Original, Thors Hammer or Bernards Klostermischung, but I really like dark tobacco bases combined with strong sweet/fruity scents like in the Pöschl Schmalzlers Doppelaroma and Südfrucht, or in Bernards Magic Moments. I haven’t tried many Samuel Gawith’s until now, but I can recommend you Elmo’s Reserve and Celtic Talisman, which I didn’t like at first but became two of my favorites, they’re dark and not smoky at all. I wish there were more dark snuffs without the smokiness. I have the Samuel Gawith Apricot, which doesn’t have a natural flavour at all, but I still think it’s interesting. Does anyone know which one of the 3 unscented crests resembles the tobacco base of SG Apricot ? I’ve only tried Blue Crest Scented so far and it’s completely different. Also if you like big flavour bombs on a dark tobacco and you’re not scared to try something new, order 6 Photo Kailash.

If my memory serves me right, a dark but not smoky one I use to frequent was Zip. If you like the menthols, it has a scent of tanned leather and old books. IMO. Think I have a tin of some that is well over 8 years old and may try if it has not gone bad.

You should try S Gawith Cob Dark. Really good dark tobacco with a very interesting scent. Some others have called the scent “Lakeland” like, others if I remember rightly, have called it an “old lady” scent. Well, whatever you want to call it, I actually like it. No smokiness at all. Its worth a try for sure. And if you don’t like it, as others will tell you too, just put it aside and come back to it later. Theres a good chance you’ll get something new, and different from it. And while I’m thinking about it, SG Menthol Black is also nice. Maybe a little smokey, its just like Black Rappee, with a little menthol. Not too much, you might really like it. I do.

I’ll definitely include some of these to my next order. Thanks, SG roster is just so large that is trying them all by chance is quite an undertaking. I can really understand why SG KB Original is well respected snuff, the mix is subtle and well balanced & grind and moisture are spot on. I just realized that the combination of smokiness and citrus reminds me of this car repair shop, where they had citrus scented hand sanitizer. For me that’s not good association, but of course everyone else has their own associations.

If your interested in a SP I recomend No.1 High Mill. It’s fine and hits the spot.
