What is the difference between SG Original KB, KB Plain, & KB Special. I’m really excited to try them, but I’ve been waiting for Mr. Snuff to get KB Original back in. However, they do have KB Plain & KB Special. I almost think getting KB Plain will be just as good. I’m so confused…
Don’t forget KB Scented
Man, I’ve been reading snuffreviews and looking up the SG website. I think I’m going to get both GH Kendal Browns, but Ican’t decide if I should for KB Original or get SG KB Plain.
What is the difference between those two? I don’t know either and I sure would like to…
It’s what the names say: The SG Kendal Brown Plain is not scented, the Kendal Brown Original is scented (though not really heavy) in my opinion with some Orange-Citrus. My suggestion: Get both… They are nice.
The SG KB Special is scented too, yes? Haven’t cracked my tin yet…The Original is so good from a fresh vacuum tin!
Yes, the Special is scented as well, but not in the same way than the Original. It’s worth to test the whole KB-range.
I anticipate trying it out. Also I wonder the difference between KB Plain and London Brown…Maybe we’ve got the reviews here…
London Brown is more moist and has a more pronounced leathery scent than KB Plain
A wee bit digging of long rotten corpse from my side. I am quite confused by current selection (availability) of Samuel Gawith Kendal Browns. Currently I own:
Samuel Gawith Kendal Brown (new style tin print label)
Samuel Gawith Kendal Brown Original
Samuel Gawith Kendal Brown Scented
Samuel Gawith Kendal Brown Special
and this one I do not have:
Samuel Gawith Kendal Brown Plain
My question is then: is there 4 or 5 kinds of Samuel Gawith Kendal Brown snuff tobacco? As I have noticed SG Kendal Brown Original is quite finer grind than the rest with more pronnounced smell of oranges than the rest. Tin labeled as Kendal Brown have horse stable smell with hint of gearium oil in the background, medium to coarse mill. SG Kendal Brown Scented & SG Kendal Brown Special are very moist, coarse mill and allmost black in colour.
Unfortunately new web page of GH and Sam Gawith is not much helpfull these days, due they states its incomplete and it will not shown complete range of their products. Jack
@JackGrave These are purely personal opinions, so please don’t put too much reliance on my comments, however… I believe KB Plain is only offered by GH, not SG Viking Brown is rumoured to be SG’s KB with no scent added. If so, this is the only way to buy SG KB Plain. I personally find VB a little “lacking” or “incomplete” and use it as a mixer base with something like Celtic Talisman or Firedance. It may just be that the variations you’ve noticed are differences in hydration/freshness level, or batch variations due to inconsistencies in leaf consignments. So far as I am aware, they are all the same tobacco base and grind, but with different scenting formulas.
SG does make a KB Plain and it is identical to Viking Brown
I just opened a tin of SG KB last night. It is identical to VB.
I opened a tin of SG KB Original the other day. I’m still on the fence about it. More citrus than I would like in a KB. It reminds me of those chocolate oranges you get around the Holidays.
Samuel Gawith Kendal Brown is purdy iconic and prob my king of snuff. If ther was only one snuff i could have SG’s Kendal Brown would be it…now let me tell ya what i think of it, lol
I enjoy all the varieties of SG KB. I’m currently in the middle of a tin of the Plain, which is to me, one of the best snuffs, and one which I always have on hand. The Original is nice too. The citrus isn’t overdone in my opinion. As someone mentioned, SG snuffs seem to vary, sometimes quite a lot, within the particular type of Kendal Browns. Perhaps it’s because they make their snuff in relatively small batches. I saw a video of a guy in their factory sweeping what looked like KB snuff on the floor, with a broom. Anyway, without going into detail, it struck me that it was kind of a small scale operation, and hence, the variability of any individual type of snuff could be pretty common.
Take SG out of the equation and you should have a true KB. Correct me if I am wrong.
Just my ignorant opinion, but I think GH Kendal Brown is the prime example of pure Kendal Brown snuff. I do like the SG offerings very much, but the entire series seems scented in one way or another, even the ‘plain’ version.
GH seems to be an expression of pure Kendal snuff as it was intended. Just my opinion.
@chefdaniel, my fave GH
I’ve never done a proper side by side comparison. I currently have GH KB Plain stashed away in the depths of the “cellar” and haven’t had a pinch for a long time (maybe even since I first got it in bulk a couple of years ago), and I also currently have SG KB Special in a small glass jar that I load a snuffbox with occasionally. I like them both very much, it’s just that when I tend to want a snuffbox full of a KB style snuff, I keep heading straight for the Berwick Brown. I also have some F&T Kendal Brown, which I also enjoy. It’s a different type of snuff altogether, but does capture both the KB scent and the luxurious F&T style.
