Easy to take, nice tobacco smell from the tin, but a little uninspiring in the nose. Perhaps I’ll use it as a mixer. I like the tins though. This has a tendency to dry out in a snuff box I’ve found but it’s kept nice and fresh in the tin.
Which of the three SG Kendal Browns did you get? I like the original and am waiting to get the Plain and Special. Just curious.
I’m not entirely sure as the tin doesn’t say if it’s plain, original, or special. It just says Kendal - Kendal Brown - Snuff. I’m guessing it’s the plain.
Odd. Here’s a tin of Kendal Brown Original that I’ve yet to open as I work my way to the bottom of the open tin. Give me a few days and it’ll be a dead one. Where did you get it, if you don’t mind saying?
I got from Mr Snuff at the end of last year. I just checked my emailed order confirmation and it states "1 x Samuel Gawith Kendal Brown Original 25g.
It’s a good one, lightly scented on good tobacco. I’m waiting for Plain and Special. Should be fun.
I received almost a pound of KB original straight from the mill. Perfection.
Is Kendal Brown the same snuff as one of the Viking range, either Dark or Brown?
Kendal Brown Plain is the same as Viking Brown
Thanks.
@Franknsnuff I tried this after reading the reviews and comments and was nearly unimpressed, It was a dryish medium blend with little or no real flavour, as with the other Gawith Howith snuffs I got in the same order (Cinnamon and whisky) I blame it on being either old stocck or the plastic tap tins …
Yeah @Derek_007 that’s purely from the plastic tins, in the vacuum-sealed ones it is one of Britain’s finest IMO.
I’m going to do a horizontal “tasting” of Kendal Browns over the course of the day and will include Viking Brown as the wild card. From tin aroma alone I can tell WoS and F&T are the outliers. Both of these show serious floral notes and that perfume factor that I don’t normally care for but I’m willing to take one for the team. Samuel Gawith: Original, Plain & Special Viking Brown Gawith Hoggarth Fribourg and Treyer Wilsons of Sharrow Snuff Store Black Magic (just for the hell of it) I’ll use large ‘pinches’ of HDT as a palate cleanser between each. If I should survive I will post my impressions later.
Thank you @chefdaniel … I will be interested to see what you think… I am starting to think all plastic tap boxes are not great, and some are just plain old when you get them perhaps. I also do not enjoy floral , perfumes in snuff generally…
^English snuff has no business being in a tap box, even if you ordered it fresh from the factory it will be all dried out by the time it reaches you.
Tap boxes are evil and must be destroyed. I never could figure out why SG went with them from their 10g tins, which were the same as WoS. The labels have improved but the dichotomy of a great 25g tin to a POS 10g turd box baffles me. More on the KB marathon in a few.
I bought a tap box of London brown once…never again. The snuff had the consistency of dried pellets. I rehydrated it and it was ok. Tap boxes for snuff whose moisture relies on water equals dried up snuff. What are SG, GH thinking off? Wrong move.
SG KB Plain: Deep, dark, moist and…plain. Well fermented and no additional scenting. SG KB Original: Same as Plain with subtle citrus and floral notes; faint note of baby powder SG KB Special: Very slighted scented in a natural way. Can’t put my finger on it, but very nice. F&T KB: WTF? Finer mill than SG and lighter color. And holy crap is this one scented! Big bold citrus, florals and perfume. Not bad, but not my cup of tea, so to speak. WoS KB: Much the same beast as F&T, difficult to differentiate, perhaps more of a violet, geranium, lavender presence. GH KB: Nice. Plain, unscented, not as deep or dark as the SG line-up, but damn good. My favorite of the bunch. Viking Brown: Similar to SG KB Plain finer mill lighter color Snuff Store Black Magic: relabeled Viking Dark I enjoyed this. I will never do it again. Best left a fond memory.
Thank you for you reviews Chefdaniel. It’s apparent to me now that though I ordered SG Original I got sent Plain. Not to worry, these things happen. I had a few pinches today and it was definitely as per your description. I will persevere with it though. As my nose develops I may develop a liking for it. It worked for J&H Wilson SP no 1. The SG KB Original sounds like Berwick Brown, one I enjoy so I think it will go on the list of “to trys” which is getting ever longer… I’ve had to put together an excel spreadsheet!
@Franknsnuff Of them all I preferred SG Plain and GH KB. Unfortunately I am out of Berwick Brown due to my own personal greed, I went through a 25g tin in record time and it’s on reorder. Of them all, Berwick Brown is in a three way tie with the other two I just mentioned. The scenting of bergamot in BB is deft and just enough to perk up your attention without wandering into SP territory. I’d expect nothing less than perfection from Roderick, who has latent culinary tendencies.
thank you @chefdaniel for the review. I never tried Kendal Brown’s before, sure not in the way you did. But about a week ago I received GH Kendal Brown. The first pinch I took was disgusting so I put the box in a draw. But this evening I gave it another go and I must say it is delicious! I read on another thread this happens to more persons. It’s just the same effect as when taking your first cigarette as a teen, but at about the third or fourth cigarette you love it and you are hooked. GH Kendal Brown is now standard in my pocket. It seems that the Kendal Brown Recipes are closely guarded secrets. The recipe is stored somewhere on the best secured bank of Kendal. But can anyone with some knowledge of (historical) recipes shed some light on the composition of the Kendal Brown’s? I’m sure there is some salt / potash in it since it leaves a slight salty taste afterwards.
@Salmiak It was my pleasure. I think it is widely known here that I consider tap boxes evil and that they must be destroyed. I’m also something of a snuff slut, but I only take snuff on special occasions. Like when I’m alone or with someone, or awake. I’m not a fan of GH overall, but there are a few that I truly enjoy and KB is one of them. The same hold true for F&T, with the notable exception of HDT. Before I formed that viewpoint I gave each and every one of them a proper trial. I was lucky, I conducted this scientific research at their old shop back in the seventies. After trying several grams of each I decided they were great snuff that I couldn’t stand. HDT on the other hand disappears into my face at an alarming rate. My wife has so many empty HDT tins in her girl cave it looks like the back room at F&T. GH KB: Good Snuff.
Interesting that: MySmokingShop stocks KB Original, Scented, Special MrSnuff stocks KB Original, Plain, Special

I posted only yesterday that I opened my first ever tin of SG Kendal Brown and I was enjoying it, but today I’m already bored with it. I agree good smell but that’s about it. Maybe I’m missing something about it…
I just posted my review of the KB Original
