I’ve looked around and can not find a topic on this snuff, so I’m starting one. Someone told me that I would like this since I liked Dr. Verey’s. So I tried it and I do, but I’m still a bit more partial to Dr. Verey. This is quite pleasant though, only enough menthol to kind of “wake it up” but hardly what you would call a mentholated snuff. The scenting is both spicy and minty, not unlike Dr. Verey’s or even some of the Indian blends. However, the character is distinctly that of Samuel Gawith. I’m pretty sure this uses the SP Scotch as its base. I’m surely getting cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice in the spice side. I would expect clove, but if its here its in small proportions. On the mint side, I’m not clear on if it is spearmint or peppermint. I am not getting that hint of berries that I get in Dr. Verey, and I think that is the main difference. The name: CCC? What does that stand for? Someone must know. I thought I had read once that it was something Crumbs of Comfort, so I had always thought it was a spearmint snuff like the WoS Crumbs of Comfort until I heard otherwise. Now, I’m not even sure it contains spearmint. So, please disucuss and elucidate me!
I love this stuff. I get clove, and all spice predominately. Never noticed any hint of mint about it, I’ll have to dig in later. I find it a really relaxing snuff, good for relaxing before bed.
I get a little clove and allspice, and I think a little peppermint. What did you think of the Spartan? A little off topic but has a similar background spice, once you get past the menthol, which I find a bit overdone. ( I read your review, just wondering if you might consider a trying a pinch and see if you get any of the spice).
GH Spartan? To me that tastes like a mentholated Toque Spanish Gem. Nothing like CCC. Maybe you are thinking of Lakeland or Ambassador? Or possiby even Mitchells?
Oh, you want me to go back to Spartan and see if I get some spice? Ok. I’ll have a go.
@Whalen: I’m snuffing Spartan. I’m sticking with my exisiting evaluation. I’m not detecting any spice. I could really like this snuff if it wasn’t for the damn menthol. Its got a nice creamy sweet flavor but the menthol really gets in the way.
Hey my bad! After a resniff I have concluded I am totally confused in these snuffs, I thought I remember spice in the Spartan, it gets stranger, the spice I was thinking about was actually in the GH SP, what its doing in there I do not know. Strangest SP I have ever had. You are right about the Spartan though, I love what seems to be underneath the menthol, creamy Spanish Gem is spot on, damn menthol! Smell memory problems! Btw, really enjoyed the Echt Fresco review!
Ahh! The SP! That’s one I only had an old sneeze-box of some time ago. It wasn’t bad though, but I don’t remember it being strange or spicy. It did get sneezy and harsh when dried out I’ll get a mini-tub in the near future and give it a proper evaluation.
It has a base that is very much like WOS Strasbourg to me. It also results in a almost fruity perfume smell, not so much bergamot.
Are you guys full of it, or doing your homework, or a little of both? I can only hope to obtain your level of professional break downs in the taste department. In the mean time, I am not worthy…I’m just hooked!
Hooked time and practice is all it takes. For some reason having a vocabulary to go with a sense makes it much sharper (there is lots of science behind this). Also the more you conciously pay attention to a sense the sharper it becomes to, basicly because your brain says this is important, dipshit (this is how I imagine the brain talks about the rest of the body behind it’s back) is really paying attention I guess I’ll spend more energy analyzing this sense. Nearly anyone can become pretty good at epicuriean pass times with practice (it’s science).
@hooked- Xander has a great ability to grasp what nuances are in a snuff and articulate it, I do not, and my snuff smell memory seems to be a little cross linked, so bare with me, please! When I try real hard I can get words for my what my sense of smell tells me, I mean I can smell perfectly well, and I know what I like, some people are great noses, they have a gift. Myself, I have to concentrate and work real hard at it. Left brain/Right brain. It is more being able to verbally describe colors, some can and some cannot, everyone has different strengths and weaknesses. I know enough now from reading reviews of snuff, and then snuffing, to be able to pick out what different reviewers like\dislike, and in what way that coincides with my own preferences.
So…anybody know what C.C.C. stands for?
I wish I knew…and I may try it because it sounds interesting. I’m guessing it contains three spices from your discription? Chipotle, Chives, Cilantro, Cinnamon, Cloves, Coriander, Cumin…?
Cape City Councel Common Class Consul
Is it true that we have no representative here from Samuel Gawith? What do their people do online? How about an email to them? I’m intrigued myself.
cee cee cee?
Clove, cinnamon, camphor. Those are the scents I detect. Fluffy and moist, full of spice. I’m coming to enjoy this a lot. I guess I should try Dr. Verys as well, but I find this snuff very satisfying indeed.
Recently tried this for the first time and liked it so much I ordered the 25 gram tin immediately after finding out that CCC was being discontinued.
