Just revived latest order from Mr. Snuff and tried out the Blue Crest. This is a great snuff. The grind is medium but very fluffy and light. No graininess to it at all. The color is a medium to light brown. The flavor is excellent. It is plain but has a very wide variety of different elements to it. I get a warm Hay/grain type of scent first followed by earthy tobacco. It has that warmness of an Irish toast but much more complex flavor. I would defiantly try this one out. I will be ordering the rest of the crest series soon. I can only hope they are half as good as the blue.
I am on the same path Thendrix. I got in an order of all the Crest lines Mr. Snuff had to offer in the 25g tins. Initial impression is that the three are very similar along with SP Scotch. Since I haven’t spent extensive time with these snuffs I can only offer a first impression. I hesitate to do so because snuffs can be tricky and take some time to reveal their true nature or multiple facets. With that said, I think you’ll be happy with the other Crests since they seem to share a common denominator with the base flavor of plain tobacco. The Red Crest has the richest and more pronounced of the flavors, that sweet cigar shop smell, not unlike Toque Natural. The Blue and Yellow are similar to some degree in the underlying taste, whereas the Blue seems to be darker and has a sharper PH burn. Yellow seems lighter and less sharp. I haven’t gotten around to trying the Blue Crest Scented yet. In fact, I may go pop the tin now and sample it. Also, examine the grind of the SP Scotch very closely and you’ll discover one of its secrets.
I see. I will defiantly have to try the red crest for sure. I love plain snuffs. I think most good tobacco has enough of it’s own flavor to remain unscented. I have yet to try a lot of the Samuel Gawith but i am finding I really like it a lot. The Black Rappee is absolutely fantastic. It is a shame that SG is the only readily available black rappee any more.
Ok, I messed around a bit with the Blue Crest Scented. This is NOT a plain snuff. The name doesn’t quite fit with the Crest series IMO and might be more aptly renamed. The name that comes to mind is “Men’s Wear”, or “Haberdashery”. Its a perfumed type snuff that reminds me of walking past the men’s cologne section in a fancy shopping store. I personally enjoy it, just thought I’d toss a caveat your way so you have a better idea of what to expect because I find that the ‘scented’ part in the name is hard to overstate.
I may have to try that one too. I like scented snuffs as well, just not as well as plain.
I am have the Yellow Crest right now and i have to admit that this snuff is growing on me. In the beginning i was not that fond of it but while the days pass by and i take more and more pinches from it, i like it more and more. Definitly worth a try and i will go and check out Blue and Red as well - that is for sure.
I just looked at SG’s web site and they don’t list the BC Scented on there. I could have sworn I saw Yellow Crest Scented at one time. Tho I’m not certain about that.
The SP column/tab lists: SP (plain or scented). So all SPs are available both ways. That’s the only way I’ve seen it listed there, though their website does omit some of their snuffs.
Blue Crest is the only one I’ve tried. I agree w/ the other posters about its hay-like scent, nice, fluffy tobacco. Its very nice. In fact, I just ordered the other two from MS yesterday. Can’t wait to try them. I’ve never been disappointed with any snuff from SG. They have their own unique character. I recently uncoverd my first SG, Aniseed, several years old, fresh, perfumed and fluffy. As good as it was when I first opened it. Those tins are great. They keep the snuff so fresh. I think other snuffmakers should use them too. I save all my empty tins, remove the label, and put other snuff inside. Recycling 101.
I’ve got an unopened tin of this one that I might have to pop open soon. It sounds closer to the yellow crest than the red crest, both of which I enjoy. I’ve put if off long enough. (Finds tin, opens it) It looks like Red Crest, and initially smells like it, but then the hay and grassy notes pop up. Now I’m getting the grainy flavor described. Damn. More interesting than the Red or the Yellow crest, and even more clearing. Maybe it’s just the novelty of it all, but this is some really good snuff.
And I though I was the only one who enjoyed blue crest.
Nope, I buy it in bulk.
It’s one of my favorites as well.
Mine too. I also quite like the yellow. Not in love with red, though.
Am I the only one who thinks the ‘taste’ of Blue Crest is somewhat akin to the smell of tea? I love it, BC is probably my favourite SG.
I love B.C. The grassy smell, the texture, the grassy smell, hidden notes of earthiness. One I savor and don’t overdo.
I like it too. What do you think about the nic content?
I’ve only recently started the Crest series, with the exception of Yellow Crest. I’m looking for someone to trade for YC. I truly love both the Red and Blue, for different reasons and at different times. The grind, moisture and nic hit are all gentle, the scents are similar but have enough of their own character to keep things interesting, and they have a long lasting mellow effect. Blue is lighter and grassy, red is richer and a bit sweeter. I also detect a tea-like background note in each. Both are becoming go-to plain, natural snuffs almost, but not quite, giving HDT a run for its money. Maybe Sir Nigel and Sir Johnny can explore this genre, along with good, rich, coarse unscented Rappee. I also love Black Rappee, London Brown and Scotch Black and could build a nice library of plains around those, plus Crests and whatever our resident snuff geniuses can come up with. (That is a not-too-subtle hint).
