Samuel Gawith 25g round tin

I have a 25g tin of scotch black snuff. How do you open these things? Doesn’t look like it twists off… I could try prying it but I don’t want to ruin the tin and/or the seal. Never had one before so please, any advice??

lol nm, i couldnt wait, I pryed it open and i’ll just put the bent tin into an air tight freezer bag. Initial smell was that of…burnt rubber? Hmm…maybe it’ll grow on me…

you are supposed to open it by twisting a coin in the groove under the lid

Really? Hmmm…i will have to try it next time. Thanks, nin.

same tins as the JH wilsons by the look of it.

and every once in a while you get a cursed tin that is really hard to open even with a coin. I got one like that, I think I swore it open.

I had a JH tin that just didn’t want to open, now it has dents all along the side of the tin from twisting the coin.

it happens sometimes. Usaly opens like a charm.

I use my door key to pop those lids off, same with pipe tobacco tins. I tried with a coin once and it just seems like too much messing around, a key just slips right under the lid and you can pry the lid off.

I thought these tins were vacuum sealed and that was why they are hard to open the first time? I heard a whoosh when I opened mine. I am at 364 feet above sea level.

I use the screwdriver on my Swiss Army knife. I use it as a turn key, not as a pry bar. 1 turn at 12:00, 1 at 3:00, 1 at 6:00. I can usually skip 9:00 because after three twists, its open.

They are designed to use a large coin like a pound coin. Maybe you have a silver dollar coin?

2 euro coin works fine as does flat house key like streetcarp proposed. Just move around the rim with whatever you’re using.

I really like the new tins. They look nice, feel good and height of the filling is just perfect - you can open it without any problem and nothing spills away.

@Nachman £1 coins aren’t all that big and are too thick to be used in opening tins. the best coin is a 50p IMO. Big coin and just the right thickness.

The tin design goes back quiet a few years and are best opened with an old penny. I usually use a 1881 Queen Vic. old one.
