I’ve noticed something very odd that has happened to me on a couple occasions. I’ve been lucky where people have sent me snuff samples in those little zip locks to try before I order the actual tins. On a couple occasions (sent from different people) I liked the snuffs so I put in orders for those snuffs in 25 gram tins. What i’ve noticed a few times that the snuff from the tin is alot different from what i’ve experienced from the samplers. Two cases they smelt like two different snuffs all together. I’m happy with the tins don’t get me wrong but it’s just crazy that the same snuff could smell different from the tin than it can from samplers friends send. Anyone else have this happen?
I guess it’s possible the samples were from the bottom of an older tin… or sometimes stored in the same drawer, I’ve had a heavy mint/menthol scent invade other plain snuff I had in there if it wasn’t stored carefully. The main thing is, you haven’t stopped buying snuff, haha!
True Bart cross contamination etc could be in play. I’m only a few months in im not stopping anytime soon lol, have done three orders so far. First from toque and now I’m on my second from Mr Snuff.
In my experience snuff does not hold flavor well when stored in ziplock baggies and i’m pretty simplistic in my snuff storage requirements. It almost seems they suck the flavor right out of it.
I received a small sample of Crumbs of Comfort at one point and the scent is worlds apart from the large tin that I got from Mr. Snuff. It’s almost as if its a whole other snuff.
I think its because the ammonia levels in a vacuum sealed 25g tin. In the little baggies the ammonia will evaporate long before it gets to you, whereas in a vacuum sealed tin it has nowhere to go but back into the snuff. So to sum it up I’ve found that vacuum sealed tins and larger tins have more of an ammonia smell to them.
why stop at ammonia? If that escapes so would the other scents. As well as other freshness signs.
The smell of all the snuff I have is always changing, and where it’s stored makes it change in different ways (for example, the Toque Chocolate I put in a glass vial smells more like very dark, roasted chocolate, and the snuff that remains in the orginal tin has more of a sweet milk chocolate smell). I like that effect a lot, because it makes snuff even more interesting.
The difference is down purely to it being less hydrated than the snuff in a new can - and when snuff looses water it losses the aromatics that flavour it. You’ll find even more of a difference if you buy snuff in bulk ever because its at optimum freshness and how the blender meant it to be.
Thanks for the insight guys! I didn’t realize how many factors could be at play. I bet with toasts and scotches it’s less tempermental. I wonder if there will be any difference from the 10 gram tin of fubar grunt to the 50 gram jug I ordered. The 10 gram tin I recieved was a bit dry so we will see.
What tins are vaccuum sealed?
@rdunnion: the Samuel Gawith 25g tins are vaccum sealed and so are the large tins from Imperial (Hedges, J&H Wilson). Smith’s were vaccum sealed when SG had the contract. Now it seems that Gawith Hoggarth has the Smith’s contract and they are sold in GH’s 25g mini drums. Smith’s seems to go back and forth between these two companies inexplicably.
Strange little company Smiths. They just don’t seem to get it.
