Hey guys just got my order in and had 5 mins to run home and open it on lunch break. I can not for the life of me open the Sam Gawith vacuum tins. How do I open them.
@Grim All good advice on that thread. Having recently struggled to open a tin of SG Grousemoor snuff - and not having correctly sized coins or a screwdriver to hand - I used the edge of the tamper on my Czech pipe tool to twist the lid and break the vacuum seal. If you are not a pipe smoker that is probably a useless piece of advice but if you are then you are bound to have a pipe tool lying around.
You can use the ring of the Czech pipe tool, where all 3 parts come together (comfortable to hold) . Just have the rim of the tin in between the 2 rings (of the Czech pipe tool) and pull it up, move it aside a little and again all around…
I have a really weird pocket knife. It’s got one blade that curves forward like a leather cutter and another that’s shaped kinda like a cleaver. I think it’s for shaving but I’ve pried many a vacuum sealed tin of snuff or pipe tobacco open with it.
use a hand held bottle opener then transfer the contents to it’s permanent storage Jar.
Thanks y’all, figured it was like some of the pipe tobacco tins. I took the spoon of the pipe tool and ta-da. Thanks for the replies, I only had a minute to try earlier.
Sometimes it is tricky to open them, that is for sure and many did encounter that fact by themselves. However, i want to sing the praise of SG tins. So tight and handy. Best tins i know actually.
@Prismaster Totally agree with you. The lids are difficult to get off even after repeated openings but that suggests that they are pretty much airtight so they should keep the snuff fresh. That makes the problems opening them worthwhile.
@Chris what tin did you to open ? (not that it matters in term of the tin, i am just curious)
@Prismaster It was SG Grousemoor. It is good but I was expecting an aroma that was closer to their Grousemoor pipe tobacco whereas the snuff has a much darker and heavier scent. I am still trying to work out exactly what is in it but I am enjoying it.
@chris the moor of grouse obviousily!
@chris what kind of snuff is it ? i only know the snuff and pipe tobacco by name and it seems to be one of the most popular pipe tobacco blends from SG.
By far the easiest method for opening the SG tins are using my Opinel No.4 knife. When closed enough sticks out to fit under the rim and the wood handle provides great leverage.
@Prismaster It is very dark and moist with quite a coarse grind. Reviewers say that it has a lavender aroma but I don’t really pick that out so if it is there it is quite subtle. I don’t think any one ingredient stands out but they blend together and it does have a rainy day countryside aroma to it - if that makes any sense. The pipe tobacco is a light golden colour with a fairly rough cut to it. It has a Lakeland flavour but quite lightly floral compared to something like GH Ennerdale. Perfect for smoking on a sunny day.
@chris this sounds quite good to me, thanks
@Prismaster It is good - just not quite what I was expecting when compared to the pipe tobacco but I enjoy it. I forgot to mention that it does have a bit of burn to it and the aroma lingers for a while but very faintly. I took some a little while ago and now that it is fading the residual aroma reminds me slightly of WoS Royal George.
