Sam Gawith Snuff recommendations

I’ve only recently started to consider branching out a bit. Until I joined here, I thought sniffing between eight or nine snuffs was an oddity. Now I see people have tried hundreds. I’m behind the eight ball. Here’s the sum total of my experience in this line: Lavender Dark, Irish D Light (lovely, but makes me cough) and KB original. I like dark earthy tastes and I seem to prefer moist. I’m open to recommendations. Cob Dark looks intriguing. Any good florals. Also, I have googled the forums. But new snuffs come out all the time. And people’s opinions change.

Silky Dark (Viking Dark), Red Crest, and Black Coffee are my favourites from them. The Silky Dark and Black Coffee have a dark earthiness to them while the Red Crest is more grassy. All are easy to take. I haven’t had a floral of theirs that I’ve liked but I’m not big on florals. They do have a lot of florals to choose from though.

You should try London Brown, Black Rappe, Scotch Black, and Dr. Verey’s you might like those as they are in line with your tastes, although Dr Verey’s is a fine grind with a hint of menthol; one of my favorites from SG.

Blue Crest is an amazing natural tobacco snuff. Even if it’s not what you’re looking for, it would work great as a mixer to tone down powerful flavors.

I’ll second @crullers‌ with the Silky Dark/Viking Dark/Black Magic(save yourself a few cents if ordering by the tin with this one) and the Black Coffee. Both very moorish, so much so with Viking Dark I have been working on weening myself of my fiendishness for it over the last few months.

S.G. Elmo’s Reserve is a must have , all the Kendal Browns and the Blue Crests and of course Banana and Honey for the smooth and tasty drip ! *O* ya and Vanilla , Plum and Cob Dark .

Thank you all.

My Faves are Gold Mull and Afterglow, Gold Mull has a beautiful floral scent that comes through!

Amen to the above! Especially St. Elmo’s… While Id prefer it to be a finer grind, it is truly a joy to have in my daily rotation.

Black Coffee and Kendal Brown are both dark and earthy, and I’ve come to love them both. I do like Firedance quite a bit, but it’s a liquor/fruit with just a hint of darkness - it’s delicious, but it might not be exactly what you’re looking for.

You know I think Afterglow falls into a category of one. That is I prefer it dried out compared to when it is fresh & moist.

Will have to give it ago, never lasts long enough round these parts!

SG Grousemoor It is not truly earthy as it has a combination of scents that create a whole new one that I can’t compare to any other aroma. But it always reminds me of walking in the countryside in the Autumn after rain so sort of wet earthy if that makes any sense.

Ooh, Afterglow. That sounds nice. @chris‌, I once smoked Grousemoor. I love Ennerdale Flake and Condor, have been known to kill for Condor, but 'strewth, Grousemoor was odd. Might have to give it the old college sniff and see.

@Malatesta You obviously have exceptional good taste - Ennerdale and Condor are the pipe tobaccos that I always have a good stock of!!! I also enjoy a bowlful of Grousemoor in the Spring but Grousemoor snuff bears no resemblance at all to the aroma or taste of Grousemoor pipe tobacco. The pipe tobacco has that light, lemon grass aroma and is - as SG say - reminiscent of a Spring day. Grousemoor snuff is much darker and heavier in texture, moisture and aroma. I really don’t understand why SG gave the pipe tobacco and the snuff the same name as they are pretty much the opposite of each other.

SP No1 High Mill and any of the crests have my blessing as for the much loved black coffee well in my opinion you’re better off with Snuff Store Cafe Noir, SG Black Coffee is just too acidic in my opinion.

Oooh ya… toffee is really nice for an after dinner treat. I need to order some of that as I forgot how much I enjoyed that one (as it has long been snuffed up by yours truly.)

Love black rapee and scotch black. Golden mull is an odd one. I’m not sure I like it but keep pinching it to check. It’s a fruity menthol and judging by how much I’ve got through I must like it.

I have the SG Cola, Vanilla, and Cherry. Plus a large tin of the high mill #1. I have been using the Cherry and Vanilla regularly for months, just got the Cola and is one of my new favorites, and just got the High Mill a couple days ago too, but have not tried it yet. The tobacco is very easy to handle and seems like a pretty nice quality. The cherry reminds me of kool aid and is a little too sweet by itself for me, for heavy use. The vanilla has a subtle leather vanilla flavor, its very nice.
