Out of curiosity does wilsons natural snuff contain salt? also toque menthol. Or is there no way to find out without a chemistry set? Lol I’ll still be fine with them if they do but i want to use salt free snuff if possible for my main use. Thanks
Jeff, that’s going to be a challenge. Many, if not most, tobaccos are fermented to one degree or another and salt is the best way to stop fermentation. It’s also the #1 flavor enhancement and translates to aromatic enhancement as well. Good luck. May I ask why you’re looking for salt free snuff?
Well I thought it would be better for blood pressure… But I don’t really mind if they all have salt because I’m giving up a pack of cigs a day… It should even out for the better. My blood pressure is normal now but I’ve had issues in the past… But it’s still normal on a pack a day I can’t image trading that for some salt hurts
Your work environment and boss’ demeanor may have an impact on your blood pressure too. Don’t sweat the small shit.

That’s true. I do seem to sweat a lot these days. ( figuratively ) Anyone else an insomniac or just me? Almost 1 AM here and I’m still going strong, every night. Lol
Snuff isnt methamphetamines. You’re heart won’t explode and any salt in snuff wouldnt be in an amount to really be concerned about. I’d never even heard of salt in snuff, in snus, yes.
I think most commercial snuffs have some salt. I have been experimenting with making my own snuff, and everything I read said that there should be 5-10% salt in the finished product. That sounded like a lot, so I assumed that I was misunderstanding what was meant. I thought maybe the 10% meant a 10% solution in water or something, surely they couldn’t mean 10% by weight?! Well, it turned out that it was correct. I tried adding between 5 and 10% by weight of salt, and all of a sudden, my home made snuff started tasting like commercial snuff. I have found that adding something around 7-8% works perfectly for the particular tobaccos I have been using. The waters are muddied somewhat by not knowing exactly how much salt is used in a given product, and also what type of salt. I believe that some manufacturers use potassium chloride, or at least a mixture of sodium and potassium chlorides. Since potassium chloride is the stuff found in salt substitutes for those who need to limit their sodium intake, I assume that it would be safe for you. If you’re really that worried, then you have two options: 1. Email the snuff companies, explaining the situation and ask them how much/what types of salt they use. 2. Make your own snuff, and use only potassium chloride. Also, bear in mind that most people blow their noses after enjoying the snuff for a few minutes. Sure, you’ll inevitably swallow some, but it probably won’t be much if you’re careful to blow your nose before you experience a lot of throat drip. If you are a what I consider to be a heavy user (opinions vary a lot about this), you may use 10g of snuff in a day. If you swallowed ALL of that snuff, and it was a FULL 10% salt, and if ALL of that salt happened to be sodium chloride, you would still only be consuming 1g of sodium chloride per day. That’s probably the worst-case scenario.
See a thread I started on this http://snuffhouse.org/discussion/8966/salt-in-snuff#latest In many snuffs there is salt, sure in the more complex recipes. Or to quote Wilson’s: “some contain salt, some contain potash, some contain both”. I am very happy to take a snuff with salt for my low blood pressure and other things. I believe nasal intake too contributes. Just put your snuff on the point of your tongue to check if it’s salty.
