Rusty Tins and Ruined Snuff

I know a lot of people have been upset by Samuel Gawith introducing plastic dispensers, but at least plastic doesn’t rust. I have three tins (1 Wild Duck - purchased, and 2 given as freebies - another Wild Duck and a KB original) that have rusted. When I first opened them the snuff was dry and there was a metallic smell, so I tipped the snuff out and found loads of small rust marks. I was going to re-moisturise it, but I considered it beyond hope, so the whole lot was chucked out. I only had them a few weeks, so they must have rusted before I received them. Is there any way rusting can be prevented? I store my tins in airtight boxes in the freezer and am assuming this will prevent rusting. However, even stored in a vacuum at room temperature, I am sure moister snuffs will rot the tins from the inside out. Has anyone else had to throw snuff away because of rust?

I haven’t had any ruined snuff yet due to rust, but I do have a few tins that are extremely difficult to open. It seems to be only the Sam Gawith tins that rust, not Wilson’s, Hedges, or any other metal tins. I wonder why that is.

I have only gotten one tin of snuff that was rusted. It was Wilsons Royal George and I used it anyway. I did not like it much but I don’t think it was from the rust. Some people on this forum think rust is bad for you, personally I don’t think it will hurt me.

I thought there was only one manufacturer of snuff tins in the UK, and they all have a similar design, except the Toque ones of course.

If they’re made from aluminum alloy, they won’t rust. Try a magnet on them. Steel will stick, aluminum will not. Also try removing rust with a magnet.

Snuff is cheap enough to not have to try and salvage a rust filled snuff. Throw it out or return it from where it was purchased. Why risk anything to save $2.

Buy bulk, use a snuffbox - thats been my my personal key to snuffing happiness for the last 5 years or so. Before that I always bought small cans because they are the most readily available, but I really started to notice that they were so often corroded etc. And the plastic cans just dry out. Just my humble thoughts on the matter, bulk buying can be costly and I know a lot of folks would find it impracticable. But if you can, and you find your dream snuff, get yourself a pound or so. Love and Peace

@sandy130674: I’ve had this experience myself like Jarhog, It’s a nice thought to salvage things, but took Troutstroker’s advice, and chucked it. I think I either made a pal, or not a pal when I asked where I got it from to check their stock. @snuffster: 5 years snuffing right? I wanna touch on dream snuff, how long did it take to find for you? This is like me sticking with Crest toothpaste, possible maybe with Toque, Toffee’s a keeper. Then again Fribourg & Treyer only have 13 available, I could be an F&T exclusive snuffer… my ass! he he.

well ive been snuffing for nearly 30, but never realised that so many of the small packages were lousy at keeping snuff fresh, when i happened to buy a pound of snuff fresh from the factory i realised what i’d been missing and just got converted to that kind of purchasing

I’ve got to agree with snuffster - bulk is the way to go for optimal freshness and flavour. Snuff seems to keep much better in bulk as well. The trick is deciding which ones to buy in bulk!

@ ertony Quote; “The trick is deciding which ones to buy in bulk!” But I can just see you there with 200 x 1Lb drums of different flavours lol!

I think my bank manager might have something to say if I did that!

Just opened a tin of Wos Princes and there was rust on the side of the tin. At first the snuff smelled good but after that the metallic scent appiered and ruined my evening. So i dumped the tin straight to garbabe bin. Well i’m making a new snuff order tomorrow so i think i have to get a new tin 'cause i haven’t even snuffed that one before.

Of course bulk is better, but you gotta try a 25g tin to make sure you like it.

Just ordered a new small tin of Princes to try along some other WoS snuffs. Yep but i can’t order anything in bulk 'cause i always get bored of any snuff after snuffing a while. Just like to have everything in these small thins so i have variety to use.
