Has anyone run into a snuff-taker in real life, or even someone who’s just somewhat familiar with snuff? The other night I stopped into a tiny convenience store in da hood to buy some cigarettes (I got hooked on them over July 4 weekend, I can never have 1 without having 100, but I haven’t had any today, getting back on the snuff wagon). I had a tin of White Elephant in my hand. The store owner was Indian and asked me what I had, and I told him it was Indian snuff, and he started telling me about how his grandfather in India uses snuff and how he tried it to quit cigarettes but it wasn’t strong enough for him (I don’t think he used White Elephant!) He said he uses an oral tobacco product made by peasants in the villages and pays for his uncle to ship it up to him, I have half a mind to go back and see if I could buy a pinch off him, or maybe trade him for some extra sterk snus or something. He said it wasn’t nasraal, I don’t know what term he used for it. Also ran into an old family friend who grew up in Texas and he said he still remembers all the old women when he was growing up were snuff-takers, though he can’t remember if they used it nasally or orally (probably orally though). One of my co-workers is from West Virginia so I’ll have to ask him about it some time, and another one uses camel snus as an at-work substitute for dip, I’ll have to get him into the real stuff one of these days. Also was buying snuff at food lion the other day and the clerk said she loved opening the snuff cabinet because it reminded her of her grandpa lol.
Never met another snuff taker but have had a few knowing cheeky smiles from people when taking pinches in public who clearly knew what I was doing including a copper!
the last snuff taker I met was Mr. Stackhouse. He was blind from being a welder but not using eye protection and used to walk down our street every day. That was 55 years ago, lol.
Never, closest I get is someone telling me about their grandmother dipping it, since I am in the southeast us.
I would like to encounter fellow MN snuffers.
only ever seen one other snuffer, @50ft_trad , and that was an organised trade. would definitely like to see more of us!
never seen one anywhere, not even pubs.
Do you want to know another snuffer personally? Let somebody to become one I had started, offered some pinches to colleagues and voila, one of them has always a tin on his table! A second one (girl) often can’t resist to my offers and tries some light snuff after lunch. Ok, I can doubt about the morals of such a mission but it is such a joy…
Yes, two. One an old family friend, now long dead, and another an almost permanent fixture in a London Club I visit very occasionally.
The co-worker from West Virginia said he was familiar with snuff. He knew an old lady who sniffed it. Nice to have personal confirmation that scotches were, indeed, sniffed, even as recently as the 1950s.
One time, back in 2011, I went to Jaap’s mill in Netherlands. That was the last snuff taker I found IRL. But I kinda went looking for him, so I’m not really sure it counts. :))
@ puffpuff: It counts because we regularly get snuff takers IRL at the mills. Jaap Bes.
The only snuff users I know mostly are snuffing from my tins. Well I know one guy who uses snuff that he buys, but he started from my tin. He really didn’t appreciate the FireDrac I let him try. The Royal George, that one he loved.
I would like to encounter fellow MN snuffers.
Fellow MN Snuffer here… Twin cities area. I know one other MN snuffer that dabbles, who also happens to be a fantastic Tobacco Pipe carver

Northwest Iowa. 3 hours south of the Twins.
@Mouse Jeremiah Sandahl of http://sandahlpipe.com/ @johnnyFriday Nice! Not too far…
Yup… At a MONASTERY of all places! The man who was to become my Spiritual Father was a snuffer from way back when. I now keep His Beatitude supplied. He has inducted me into The Brotherhood of Sanctified Snuff Sniffers.
@johnnyFriday Nice! Not too far…
@Bryanikon, Here in the States 3 hours is practically neighbors. Mankato is damned near exactly 1 1/2 hours from each of us.
When I visit coal country just about everybody is familier with it. That’s all they use when they are down in the mines – even a _ spark _ is dangerous down there!
@howdydave, does that mean the local stores carry a large variety?
I’ve actually got one friend who, along with his wife, is a pretty regular snuffer, in fact years ago he was the first person I ever saw use it. I have several other freinds who are casual partakers. It’s nice to be sat round a table down the pub, with the various snuffboxes/bullets/smashboxes out discussing what we’re gonna put up our noses next…
I’ve never ran into anyone else with their own snuff. I have been out at the local pub plenty of times where someone seen me snuff. I then get the usual “is that SNUFF!” And then next comes “you mind” or “can I try some”. Most of the time they turn into regular snuffers after that and damn near use up all my snuff for the night.
Here in Dublin snuff takers are usually inner city hard men and their mothers.
Hmm - sounds “interesting”. Here, the “hardmen” are more likely on dope or smuggled cigs. Maybe their Staffordshire bull terriers or mastiffs take snuff…
A guy who works for the same institution I do, but on a different unit, is an ex-marine and immediately recognized my tin of Dholakia Ganga. He said his unit had a container about twice the size of that. I didn’t ask him what kind of snuff they were using though (doubt it was dholakia, I think he just saw that it said "nasal snuff). But he certainly knew what it was and took a big ol’ pinch, snorted it hard too.
Just today I visited my local tobacconists and there was a group of students buying their first tin of snuff. That’s the first time I’ve ever seen anybody with any snuff that I’ve not given to them.
Went to the Dublin Ohio Irish Festival last weekend and brought along my snuffbox with Irish HT 22 and let my buddy try a pinch over a couple glasses of Guinness. I warned him and told him to take a deep breath but still went straight to the back of his throat. He was coughing for a minute or two haha but then I took out my tin of Toque Lavender that I brought just in case and he was willing to try again and this time he was able to keep it in his nose and he really enjoyed it. Few days later I get a text asking me where he can get some. We got another one!
Yeah I was snuffing white elephant today and got someone to try it, he asked me where to buy it, said I was enlightening him haha.
I have more luck with ladies than anyone else, especially since Ive started carrying a pretty snuffbox. Two of my friends wives are regulars now (WoS Queens) got them started, one’s son also takes a pinch from her every morning before work. Another time we had a secretary at work who would try every new flavor I brought in to work. A male friend of mine has gone out and purchased some Silver Dollar selections and I gave him a tin of WoS Jasmine but the Frohes Fest is what I got him with. Another friend likes the Aniseed Extra I often carry for those smelly cigarette parties I sometimes go to. Even my wife has indulged a time or two. Most of my close friends have tried it at least once.
No but they run into me, and they are all misinformed . I tell them about harm reduction and the other benefits of snuff. Always offer, have few takers and a couple converts. I did meet a member for a trade once but that was arranged, so that don’t count.
Apparently, my dad enjoyed snuff. It was used by miners as obviously, there was no smoking down the pit. My mum can remember him dipping cigarettes in it. Why would he do that? I should definitely ask him! I did offer him a pinch of mine but he just looked at me in disgust haha was it perceived as a masculine habit? I always thought it was used equally by both men and women. Hmmm.
There’s quite a few people in the pub I use most who’ll have some snuff off me if I’m about. In another pub in town it’s been popularised by a friend who I got back into snuffing - now on the bar they always have open tins of Wilson’s medicated 99 for customers to help themselves. Today at work my boss saw me taking a pinch and asked me about it. Turns out when he had a different job working in the coal-mining industry he, like practically everybody at the pit, took snuff. Recalls the mining village newsagent’s having a whole section of the tobacco display dedicated to nothing else. I’m gonna take in a menthol for him tomorrow to see if he’ll take the bait!
My father was a tobacco enthusiast and took it in all forms, including snuff on occasion. I remember his girlfriend gave him one of those horn mulls one year. As an adult, I’ve only met one other user, a guy called Graeme, who set up one of the first internet snuff forums. He also lives in Indonesia, buy in a different city, so we only meet up once every few years or so.
My Uncle is the only person I am sure that I met that used snuff. I was visiting him and my Aunt when I was about 11. I came across his tin on a table next to the livingroom recliners, wish I could remember what snuff it was. I asked my Aunt about it and she quickly encouraged me to try it…with no careful instruction mind you, I did and nearly coughed up both of my beautiful pink lungs. I knew from that day that my Aunt was a funny bitch and could not be trusted.
Just me and my roommate.who loves my homemade. And Many years ago a Guy that turned me on to it
