Rumney's English Recipe and Dr. Rumney's

I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on this. I have two varieties of Rumney’s, one is Dr. Rumney’s mentholyptus, the other is Rumney’s English recipe. They are both very similar, the grind is more or less the same, Dr. Rumney’s has a more pungent amonia scent to it and is slightly stronger on the menthol - there is no product info on the tin. Rumney’s English is slightly darker in colour and the product info is: Scandinavia Tobacco Company, made in South Africa. Does anyone know the story on these two? Are both varieties made by the same firm. I have included a couple of pics.

The 2nd one looks like its the same Rumney’s Export, but in a different, probably newer container than we are used to: https://mistersnuff.com/catalog/arnold-andre-rumneys-export-p-143.html The first one, I’m guessing is the old Dr. Rumney’s Mentholyptus revived: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DR-RUMNEYS-PURE-TOBACCO-SNUFF-MENTHOLYPTUS-TIN-/181054092863?pt=UK\_Collectables\_Tobacciana\_Smoking\_LE&hash=item2a27aa363f

Looking at your photo, Dr. Rumney looks a lot more cheerful than he did in the old days.

The second is indeed a new container for Swedish Match’s (or now - since the fusion - Scandinavia Tobacco Company’s) Rumney’s Export. It hard to tell what’s the first one. The tin looks new, there are three languages on it (so for sure it’s from the XXI century), so my guess is… van Erkoms. Probably a tin for the European market.

What’s the first language? It looks sort of German, but not quite. Is is a Swiss dialect? Afrikaans?

Nevermind. Google translate says its Dutch.

Yeah it’s Dutch/Flemish - I live in Luxembourg and we get a lot of products from Belgium which usually have info in French, Flemish and sometimes also German. I buy the Dr. Rumney’s here but I got the Rumney’s English in Germany.

Ah, Flemish. That explains why one or two words were a little off in the language recognition I ran. Interesting find. If you’re up for a trade for one, PM me. I’m curious if its the same as the Van Erkoms facsimile: http://ermtony.pbworks.com/w/page/44784404/Van%20Erkoms%20Dr%20Rumney’s%20Mentholyptus

@Xander - thanks for the info! Interesting stuff, definitely up for trading, have a couple of other things you may be interested in. Cheers

So it’s called Rumney’s English Recipe, made in South Africa for the Scandinavian Tobacco Company. That’s multinationalism for you!
