Hello ! I have been recently initiated on rum and cigar pairings. Legendario elixir de cuba and El credito cigars are a match made in heaven. Subsequent times involved trying 6 sipping rums and a Tabak especial cigar, with rums including Plantation 2001, Ron zecapa , Legendario(again a heavenly treat), and others. I tried pairing Dunhill Nightcap with Ironworks Bluenose rum with tremendous success, yet the Depaz rhum agricole with the same tobacco was nice, yet not spectacular. When it comes to snuff, I aim to replicate the many 18th century rum and snuff pairings of many before me. I am currently drinking Zaya Gran Reserve rum, and snuffing F&T Seville, as well as Viking’s Thor’s Hammer. Seville worked out nicely , so did Thor’s Hammer. Yet, I find it strange to pair snuff with rum, partly due to snuff being mainly olfactory, and simply to me being used to tasting the tobacco. Any veterans in rum and snuff pairing ? Do you think historically pipes/cigars and rum were more common ? Or rum and snuff ?Please share your wisdom and any glowing experiences
Damn. Last post disappeared.
During hot weather I like HDT with tall, very, very cold beverages like Mojito, Cuba Libre and rum with ginger beer (Dark & Stormy).
When it’s cold I switch to Anejo and black rums like Gosling’s served neat with a water back. Snuffs include Gekachelter Virginie, GH Kendal Brown, SG Black Rappee and all Sternecker’s offerings.
Cheers
Thank you for your input sir!
Viking Brown and Makers 46 made a good pairing tonight. The mild spiciness of the 46 went well with the smoky character of the VB. I enjoy rum as well (Appleton, Pyrat, Zacapa, and Zaya), but find bourbon adds more complexities while still providing a good level of sweetness.
What is Pyrat rum like ? I havent tried higher end Appletons yet as well
Pyrat is a copper colored rum with an added spicy, orange peel flavor. The orange is very apparent in the nose.
I like Appleton 21, but it’s very expensive now. (I bought my last bottle 15 years ago). It also has a touch of orange peel along with vanilla and some mild spices.
Sounds great !I might try both
I would guess rum and cigars are a natural considering where the best cigars and rum are reputed to have come. Haitian rum is outstanding btw. If you have a chance to get some you won’t likely be disappointed.
I like scotch, whiskey, and especially a single barrel bourbon with cigars. A Bombay & Tonic and a good cigar is also a pleasure. I would think you could find a snuff to match almost any beverage. There are so many styles and flavors.
With a pipe I like a dark roasted coffee. Just intensifies the wonderful dark flavors of both.
I’m no fan of spiced rum. I like my rum dark, strong and decent proof…90 proof works for me. I’m a big fan of Gosling’s and wish they sold in in 5 gallon drums.
That said, I just tried Sailor Jerry’s 92 proof spiced rum. Holy Shit!! I won’t make this a regular in my tipple itinerary, but when the mood strikes for a spiced rum, this will be my default bottle grab. Neat. Lime Wedge. Soda Back. Fuente Hemingway Classic perfecto. Heaven
@chefdaniel if you like Fuentes then try Hoyo de Monterrey Sultans with the darker wrapper if you haven’t already. The Excaliburs are also good but hit me the wrong way.
