Rhinitis from Snuff

So I’ve been using snuff for about 5 months now and aside from the occasional stuffed up nose, everything has been great. But being curious of the ‘hobby’ I find myself doing research once in a while. Today I stumbled upon a study that said while snuff does not cause nasal cancer it can “after long-term abuse, develop a form of chronic rhinitis, as a consequence of which they develop blocked and stuffy noses.” Does anyone here who has used snuff for a long time know what this study is talking about? Basically do you have a stuffy nose all the time now because of snuff?

No, I have a CLEAR, OPEN nose because of snuff!! But ask someone like Two Day Tom , Roderick, Snuffster, Troutstroker etc., and they will tell you what is true.

Can you reference the study you’re referring to? I remember seeing only one study on this from India several years ago & it was seriously flawed. Just basic antitobacco bullshit by one smartass doctor.

I felt sorta like this for a while. But I stopped using English menthols, and heavy German snuffs, and it seems to have stopped. Currently I have been exclusively using Indian snuffs, mainly the tradition styles, Dholakia, Sun, 5 Photo, and I have not had the problems I was having.

@snuffgrinder Yeah it was that study from India. I had one of my septum’s fixed a few years ago because I fractured my nose really bad when I was a kid so now I notice that the septum that was fixed never seems to have problems but the unaltered one gets stuffed up from snuff when I take too much.

That study had a very small sample (restricted to patients in one hospital) and no effort was made to eliminate possible confounders. There wasn’t even any mention of the type snuff used. If I had turned in something this sloppy in my statistics class way back when, the professor would’ve failed me for the entire course. Nowadays, this kind of crap is considered solid science since it conforms to accepted doctrine.

@ snuffgrinder Touche’ I use to think I was allergic to Bergamot and that was the reason for the stuffy nose so I gave away my Best SP and McChrystals Hops. Ive been using Tom Buck since thursday and wouldn’t you know it, no problems. Big dammit ha

I agree with snuffgrinder. I come across that study a few weeks ago and wasn’t very impressed. What is the pollution level of the locale, were all subjects non-smokers, what exactly were they using for snuff, and so on. And these questions occurred to a rather naive layman. I know this will go over like a lead balloon here, but, I flat out refuse to use snuff from countries, like China and India, where the standards of hygiene are appalling, and scruples about additives are demonstrably minimal. All the more for those that like what I don’t.

I had a slightly stuffed up one nostril (not bot) just late one evening – out of all the days’ I’ve been using snuff which is a few months now (since about October of last year)… and that might not have been from snuff (a person will just get that every great once in a while) some certain snuffs can hit a certain person just the wrong way and stuff them up, and there are people who report when they use some menthol snuffs they can get a ‘rebound getting stuffy after’ thing (I don’t use menthol if I can avoid it and I’ve found two snufff that made me a little stuffy and I just stopped them and went to others) the only time really snuff makes me stuffy really is from having packed a really enormous gob of snuff in my nose (which really isn’t the same thing at all as being stuffy) truth is I find my nose has an actual soothed calming almost coated feeling to it that it didn’t have before I started. and I am much less likely to have an irritated nose now. I am also careful not to pick it (if gentle blowing isn’t satisfactory I have been known to carefully poke a kleenex corner in) and I’ve actually found that sometimes the least invasive way to clear my nose is to intentionally use a snuff I know will make my nose run and sneeze in this way I’m learning to use the snuff itself to manage my nose

Some snuffs left in my nose overnight will stuff me up, but in over a year now I haven’t had any issues that weren’t solved by a good blow, or another pinch.

I agree with whistlrr here to use specific nose-clearing snuffs. Moist and coarse snuffs usually do the trick for me and menthols if haven’t used them for a while.

There’s no two ways about it, snuff doesn’t suit everyone, can cause congestion and probably long term problems for those it doesn’t suit. The point that is often missed is that we all have slightly different nasal cavaites and sinuses, with differing degrees of sensitivity. Long term snuff users are simply those people that it does not cause problems for.

When I first started snuffing, I always took it too far in. For me, this always results in fierce sneezing fits and major plug-ups. With better technique, I find snuff actually keeps my sinuses clearer, especially the scotch snuffs.

Yep, Ive had a dreadful cold over the last week and no medication has helped, the only thing that has helped me breathe has been whopping great nose fulls of snuff (Lowenprise and WoS Burgundy, mixed)

I had a bad case of a sinus cold this past weekend myself. Probably snuff induced. Basically my sinuses were inflamed to the point of infection, I think. Whatever it was, My sinuses would alternate either nostril stoppage (I mean slammed shut), I had a slight headache, felt weak, and generally quite aggravated. I worry that my sinuses are not suited to snuff but I don’t think I give a damn. I don’t get stopped up that often. Maybe once or twice a month. Then I lay off the snuff until it clears. I use the neti pot a little but if I’m stopped up, it can’t really flow through. I’m still new to this (about 4 months), so I’m learning. This thread convinced me to use snuff to fix my snuff related problem and what’dya know? Worked pretty well. I have a new found appreciation for menthol snuff now and L260 is on my next order. Rhinitis be damned!!

Right on brother, life is far too short…

I recently had the worse head cold ever. It started getting much better once I could start using snuff again.
