Review: WoS Peach Melba

This snuff came to me in an assorted 10g box and it was the first positive surprise I’ve had from Wilsons of Sharrow. The snuff is very fine but not dusty and dry. There is no menthol in it, and the medium brown snuff smells very fruity out of the tin. I can’t say that I smell peach as such…the closest is probably Pöschl’s Gawith Apricot, except without the menthol hit. This one is easier to snuff than the other Wilsons I’ve tried (such as Morlaix, Kendal Brown and Burgundy). I’m normally quite used to dark Schmalzler and German menthol snuffs so this one gives me the best of both worlds. It is light and fruity, soft and reasonably moist but doesn’t have the sharp sting of menthol. Even in the nose there is only a light burn which fades very quickly. The fruity flavour stays in my nose for quite a while, especially if I move and squeeze my nose every now and then. The downside for some of us might be that it’s not easy to taste the tobacco itself. While the fruit flavour is not overwhelmingly strong or annoying, it does push the natural tobacco flavour far towards the back. I do enjoy it and I feel that I would order it again, but it’s nothing for people who like to taste the tobacco base as well as the flavouring. It is a nice change after a day or two of dark brasil and possibly does well in homemade mixtures too. I recommend the Peach Melba.

Yet another one to add to the list…! Have you tried Toque Peach? It is lightly mentholated - hardly at all by Poschl standards - and oiled in the German style, but the peach scent is natural and delicious.

No, sorry, I haven’t gotten around to it yet. I am quite conservative by nature so when I see the Toque containers and their design, something makes me move on to other snuffs. Granted that I might miss out on a great experience but for now I just feel like they’re not quite right for me…too…how to say…aimed at young people (bright yellow with TM and copyright and web address and…did I say bright?). I don’t know. I used to use a lot of snuff years ago but I only got back into the hobby about a month ago after a nine year break. So at the moment I don’t feel too experimental yet. I have ordered the 6 Photo Special though.

I’m going out on the proverbial limb and guessing that you’re from New Zealand; where I hope to retire to make snuff and relax with a few penguins. I truly like Peach Melba, but as a chef I would like to register my opinion. Pêche Melba is a dessert created by his culinary eminence Georges Auguste Escoffier to honor the Australian soprano, Nellie Melba in 1892. It is simplicity defined. Poached peaches, fresh raspberry puree, strained of seeds, vanilla ice cream. That’s it. Perfection. The WoS offering is a very nice snuff, but it certainly isn’t Peach Melba. If the master snuff blenders at WoS were serious they would blend fresh peach scent with a light topping of fresh raspberry on a base of excellent vanilla, preferably Tahitian. The grind would be medium, with moderate moisture on a base flour of pure Flue Cured Virginia tobacco. Preferably ripe Red Virginia from East Carolina. Okay. I’m through being a pompous ass and arrogant snob. But only temporarily. Give Viking Peach a try. Based on their excellent dark flour with a good nic hit and smoky undertones, subtle peach aroma that doesn’t mask the delicious tobacco foundation. Cheers

Dear chefdaniel, I do hope you take the chefdaniel challenge and make some of the snuff you just described…

Buy what you want but you are missing out on some truly fantastic snuff. Thanks for the tip on the Peach Melba, my shopping cart is getting full.

@Kiwi78‌ I too thought the Toque logo and tins were quite gimmicky when I first saw them but I think they are the best maker when it comes to a consistent top notch product. Fubar is another brand with god awful packaging but a great product for the most part. You also did yourself a great service by ordering 6P Special. It is my favorite of the 6P line and definitely in my top 5 all time snuffs. Nice to see that you are now back into snuffing, it is quite the wonderful thing.

I think Patriotic cowboy hat wearing Americans might like the fubar package. All it needs is some guns and, eagles. Maybe some explosions. Then we might have something.

If they could make one that smelled of napalm in the morning I’m sure they’d have a winner.

@Mouse‌ Damn. Now why didn’t I think of that? Another senior moment. Pêche Melba Ripe Red Virginia leaf from East Carolina deeply scented with an extract of Cognac, Fresh Georgia Peaches, Tennessee Raspberries and Tahitian Vanilla Beans; pressed between planks of lightly toasted white oak then milled to a medium grind and moisture, creating an ideal all day snuff that is also substantial enough for an after dinner indulgence. Coming soon to a mailbox near you. Likely before Thanksgiving. Thanks Mouse.

@crullers Or gun powder. Maybe just add gunpowder too it. Doesn’t sound unsafe at all.

I love the smell of napalm in the morning.

One of the best snuffs I’ve ever had is sample of the original FUBAR Grunt. I got into snuff after it was out of production but a very generous online friend sent me some that he had stockpiled. If it Grunt was the same now it would very likely be my all day regular snuff. You just can’t judge a book by it’s cover.
