This is one of the few Schmalzlers made by Pöschl and one of the two flavoured ones. The other is Doppelaroma with a distinct apple note. And as it happens, the Doppelaroma serves as the base for the Südfrucht. Now, in German colloquial language “Südfrucht” is a summary for every other fruit coming from the south - read “tropics”. Could be pineapple, could be mango, could be banana, could be papaya. So for this Schmalzler the best we can expect is a wild mix of many flavours just as if we would buy a “tropical juice” at the supermarket. Housekeeping first. The Schmalzler is crafted just as it should be. Pöschl know their job, so it’s dark, strong, deep, moist…and as always we need a separate container because it comes in 100g and 25g bags. And as much as I want to say that the flavour seems artificial and might put people off, what I really have to say is that it works remarkably well. I’ve seen people call it a fruit bomb, but we mustn’t forget that the base is a dark, earthy Brasil tobacco. There is a balance which comes out in the nose, not in the container. Because this Schmalzler is meant to be snuffed in larger amounts, it’s easy to clog up the nose but there will also be a fair use of tissues so it all works out. I do recommend it just as I would recommend all four Pöschl Schmalzlers. Or most any Schmalzlers for that matter. There is just that special something about a Schmalzler that is flavoured with liqueur or fruit that is hard to find with a regular snuff. It just works, while a snuff would just turn into something artificial. I put that down to the Schmalzler base, the way the tobacco is fermented (which itself is obviously including a sauce that is a form of alcohol or liqueur). It is a fine combination of earthy flavours and fruit…just as you might find in a red wine (although the Südfrucht is not flavoured with wine). I don’t exactly know how Pöschl does it, but I even prefer this one over Bernard’s like Klostermischung or Postillion, which are rum and scotch flavoured, respectively. I’m calling this a staple and a must try as far as Schmalzlers go.

Good review. I like the more natural “Schmalzler A” (and all the Bernard’s I tried) more though, but I have to acknowledge I’m not a big Pöschl fan, don’t know why.

The Poschels mentioned above are very good. But the thread wouldn’t be complete w/o mentioning Sternecker. They do a very good schmalzler too. You should try them.
