There seems to have been a little misunderstanding in regards to this snuff. The idea appears to be that this is a coffee flavoured snuff so naturally the complaint would be that it doesn’t contain enough coffee. I believe it’s not supposed to be. Tia Maria is a Jamaican drink based on coffee. Vanilla, sugar and rum should be in the flavour too. Going by that premise, how good is it? My example is pretty dark, quite dry and medium fine to slightly coarse. I have to assume that is the purpose. When I open the tap box, I can smell rum and vanilla. It can smell a bit plastic and artificial out of the box but any such flavours usually leave a much better impression in the nose. Do I smell coffee beans? Well…not so much. Is it a good snuff? I’m not raving about it either. The dryness can cause an uncomfortable burn in the nose, as some of those snuffs do. In the nose it has a nice dark tobacco flavour and the vanilla, coffee and rum become very minimal. As a matter of fact it becomes a good snuff and that’s it. I wouldn’t have a party about it, I probably wouldn’t even buy it again. Do I recommend it? Sure. It’s pretty good. But there are other alternatives, and do not be fooled by the coffee in the description. There won’t be any wow moments, no revelations, it’s not a cocktail in your nose. It’s a decent snuff and that is it.
I have to say @Kiwi78 that I really enjoy/appreciate your thorough reviews and find that I am often - though not always - in total agreement. Keep up the good work!!!
did you get it from a tap box. Never buy Gawith in tapboxes. Never they always dry out. Tia Maria is a relativily moist snuff and completely awesome.
Well, yes, mine was bone dry. But I assumed that was normal. For me it’s often the sheer amount, it’s not that easy to order 25g of a snuff you haven’t tried before (although I’ve done that). Then again I’m generally not that fond of English/British snuffs because they’re always either too dry or too fine or both for me so when I got it and tried it and didn’t like it, I thought “yup, I expected that”.
I totally agree with @bob. Seems that most of the English snuffs in the tap boxes are definitely not served well by same - especially Gawith. I can totally commiserate that spending money on a larger volume of something you are not familiar with is counterintuitive, but really, this stuff is very inexpensive, and the QUALITY of the product from the larger containers is markedly better - across the board…
always get the larger size in snuff always. Go bulk if you can
I think I’m currently finding a balance between “these snuffs will always be on my shelf” and “I wonder what this snuff is like”. Coming back to it after a few years, I’ve had this phase of buying and trying now. 10g is always better for me to just try. But the trying is getting less. I’ve got the SG Lavender Dark as well and there’s simply no lavender in it. My snuff history started with Pöschl and I find that most of their tobaccos simply work best for me.
I have to agree with @Kiwi78 for dirty, mundane reasons. Economy, to be precise. As a student with no source of income other than grants and parent’s mercy, it’s not easy for me to afford a bulk purchasing craze (and as there are relatively few snuffs I like, it’s pretty sure to be a disappointment, and not a cheap one). Anyway, water based snuffs and tap boxes are simply wrong, oxy-moronic if you like. But there seems to be an issue with English snuff-makers and containers, and our complaints consistently fall on seemingly deaf ears. I wonder why, since McChrystal’s shifted from tap box to loose-lid tins (not the best option, but a better one indeed) and nothing went wrong with life on Earth.
