Long story short, I was made very angry while smoking my pipe today, a Grabow Grand Duke, and bit down on the stem and cracked it. It still smokes fine but should I just get a new one, be bothered with getting a new stem…what angle should I take on this?
A stem going to run you about $9. then you have to whittle it down to fit. It can be done easy if you have a lathe. if you have a drill press with a large chuck it not as easy. A sharp knife and sand paper hard but not impossible. but with a replacement stem you will need a buffer wheel and a heat gun to bend the stem and polish the injection mold imperfections smooth. Grabows are not expensive buy a dozen

many listed here.
Is that particular pipe special too you? If not I’d just get a new one. Just my opinion.
I suppose I just need to get another one then. Though I’m way too poor to buy a dozen as @basement_shaman suggests, lol. The 30 dollars this one cost me was a bit steep, but I’m too wrapped in my image to smoke a cob.
Search around a little. I’ve never liked grabows frankily. I’ve had better luck with other pipes in the same price range. Just my opinion.
Well I’ve never smoked any pipes other than my grabow and my great grandfathers medico. So as of right now, ignorance is bliss
McGaheys in the UK will fix.
If it still smokes fine, I don’t see a problem. Just be careful with the stem so as not to crack it further.

This is where I get my pipes fixed, don’t know if he will do business outside of Canada and its probably not worth it for a Grabow. I have had a couple of pipes fixed by him and he does excellent work.
I’ve got over 20 pipes and every single one has live rubber pipe bits on them. These rubber pieces that go on the mouthpiece not only protect the bit and your teeth but also plugs wear holes on a couple of the estate pipes i have. I love them and now dislike smoking a pipe without one. Saves your teeth if nothing else and they only cost .50c and last years. Cheaper than a new stem if the hole isnt to big.
Smoke it til it can’t be smoked, I can’t see putting money into a $30 pipe, good excuse to by a new pipe
I would agree that if it doesn’t have sentimental value it’s probably best to buy a new one. One can find a decent everyday smokin’ pipe in the $25-50USD range, you just need to know where to look. If you are attached to the pipe it can be fixed for much less than $30. There are probably more than a couple of pipe repairers that would do the job for a reasonable charge. If the guy I know is still up and doing, he would make a new one for, if I recall, about $9-13USD, more if you want one in lucite, but most folk wouldn’t put a lucite bit on a Graybow seems to me.
Thanks for the advice all. It has no sentimental value, so I’ll guess I’ll just keep with it and save my pennies untill I can pick up another one.
