Hi. I tried searching, but couldn’t find a discussion on this. I have a couple of different menthol snuffs(singleton’s, mc crystal and NTSU menthol), but the menthol is quite overpowering and i would prefer something alot milder. Does the menthol lesson over time, or is it possible to somehow lower the menthol? I am thinking about mixing it, but that will only work for the NTSU and maybe the singleton’s. the MC crystal is too fine to mix with NTSU black.
Easypeasy.Just find a plain snuff and mix with menthol snuff until happy with result. 100s of plain snuffs. Some eg’s Toque natural SG Grousemoore SG cob dark Toque Quit Wilson’s Natural Sure others will have recommendations.
I mix mc chrystals o&g with toque whisky and honey.turns into a honey menthol.
Unfortunately I don’t have access to such a wide variety of snuff (at least I believe I don’t). I’m in South Africa, and our tobacco law is such that I have to go to a brick and mortar shop to get anything that has tobacco in, can’t order at all. Far as I can find, I can get NTSU (black and menthol), taxi (blue, red, green), singleton’s menthol, Wilsons Medicated 99 (assuming this is menthol and/or something else), Mc Chrystals and sharrow mills (no idea what this is). I’m going to mix the NTSU black and methol to see what I can get, but the Mc crystals is so fine that it would probably just fall to the bottom of the tin if mixed with something courser.
I doubt it will just fall to the bottom. Never had it but I think NTSU is moister so some of that moisture will be imparted on the McC. It should evenly distribute. If in doubt give it a quick shake BEFORE you open it. Ken
@TheunsJansen we had a very prominent member here from South Africa for many years. He from ordered overseas quite a lot. I don’t recall him saying there were any troubles. Order without fear. I do know that there was a shop in S.A. (Wesley’s, I think) that used to ship outside the country but stopped doing it after the law changed. For awhile it was the only known source of Ntsu which was a snuff of mystery to many of us for years. The Wilsons Medicated 99 is menthol, yes. Its J&H Wilson’s. Sharrow Mills is Wilsons of Sharrow. There is a third Wilsons which is from South Africa which only makes a basic menthol snuff. I think its made by Best Blend (a subsidiary to Philip Morris, South Africa along with Leonard Dingler).
Put the black in the coffee grinder and grind it finer.

I will try it, thanks.

Far as I know, it’s new legislation that came in roughly 2 years ago, maybe a bit more, though I will try to find out if it applies to snuff tobacco as well. It is probably Wesley’s, I get most of my pipe tobacco and pipe products from them, as they have the best houseblends in the country that I could find so far. If the third Wilson’s you are referring to is the one in the metal tin, then it is no longer available in South Africa (according to Wesley’s) Feels like I’m snuff blocking myself at each turn here, but the search will continue. Thanks for everyone’s input and help so far, I really appreciate it.
I realize this is post is a bit old but I routinely mix Babaton menthol with 6 photo Medicated No. 666. I do give it a shake before using it though. I mix my 6p med 666 with Babaton green about 2/5 Babaton to 3/5 6p med. These days, I can’t use 6P Med. 666 or any heavily mentholated snuffs without my sinuses closing up so I have to tame them. About the only menthol I can use without cutting is Taxi Green (my absolute favorite) and it’s not a heavy menthol. I will say that I don’t care for Babaton Menthol on its own but I adore the flavor of 6P Medicated. It develops into something magical in the nose. By itself it’s just too much for me. I had a few tins of Babaton sitting around and thought, what the heck, and mixed them. Much to my surprise it was wonderful! It gives me the feel of the course South Africans with the flavor of the 6P’s that are wonderful. IMO, mix (in small batches) any snuffs regardless of the grind. If you stumble onto something great let us know. Good luck!
I mixed 6 Photo Medicated 66 with a brazilian natural snuff(Guarany Natural), and its pretty good.
Calling SG Cob Dark “plain” makes me wonder what a “perfumed” snuff must be like. Probably lead to death by asphyxiation right after a few hours of projectile vomiting, hallucinations and dementia. Do not get me wrong! Cob Dark is a damn good snuff. Based on SG’s excellent Kendal Brown flour, but it appears perfumed to the maximum limit allowed by law. Cob Dark is a good evening snuff as is Cob Gold. In moderation. I can’t even fathom what it would be like mentholated.
Same with SG Grousemoor, I think that’s a lot violet and other flowery stuff in there. I’d recommend Viking blond/brown/dark or anything that either says Natural or Toast on the tin.
I think by ‘plain’ Snuffysnuff means unmentholated. Or his nose needs a re-bore. :))
