I just got into snuff about a month ago. I’m looking for some recommendations based off what I have tried and liked as well as didn’t like. When I decided to start trying snuff I ordered 9 flavors of Toque snuff from Mr. Snuff. When I realized it was going to take a couple weeks I called every cigar/pipe tobacco shop in my area. One cigar shop sold WoS Irish High Toast #22 and nothing else. I bought a tin and after about 3 days of learning to take it I fell in love. My Toque order from Mr Snuff finally came in. I was very disappointed. I received the following Toque flavors: Coke, Almond Toast, Tofee, Peanut Butter, Ginger, Toast and Marmalade, Apricot, Cheese and Bacon, and (American) Silver Dollar Medicated. I found the Toque flavors much easier to take but they lacked the complex flavors of the WoS Irish High High Toast 22. I became somewhat fond of Touqe’s Coke, Almond Toast, Toffee, and Peanut Butter. My second Mr Snuff order was mostly WoS. I did buy 25g tins of Toque Coke, Toffee, and Almond Toast. The rest were WoS. I ordered: A large tin of #22, 10g tins of; Crumbs of Comfort, Summer Berries, and Chilli Chocolate, 5g tins of; Cola, Irish Coffe, and Grand Cairo. Wilson’s of Sharrow is at leat 10 times better than Toque. I’m about to throw all my Toque out. Based off my experience what would you all recomend?
Firstly, DO NOT throw the Toque out. Stick them all in a drawer and try them again in a month. It’s amazing how tastes change. If you still don’t like them, try again in 6 months. Seriously! If you don’t like them after 6 months, then feel free to sell/trade/sling them. What I do with snuff I don’t like is just dump them all in a big pot and mix them up. As the flavours blend it can actually make for quite a nice snuff from stuff you’d otherwise be chucking away. WoS do assortment packs, 12 tins of assorted flavours. Might be worth a gamble. If you decide to try Samuel Gawith or Gawith Hoggarth snuffs, avoid the 10g tap boxes - they are a nightmare, and the snuff will be wrecked before it even gets to you. Always buy the 25g tins/tubs. As you’ve only been snuffing a month, spend some time with what you already have, and give your nose time to settle into the experience. Different atmospheric and other things affect what is most enjoyable at the time. For example, sometimes Toque Coltsfoot is quite sickly in my nose, at other times I can’t leave it alone. For future recommendations, I’d suggest trying a little more diversity, different types of snuff, not just different flavours: 6 Photo Anarkali Molens Latakia AO1860 Fribourg and Treyer Santa Domingo and Dr J R Justice Sam Gawith Kendal Brown (any of the variants) Also maybe try a schmaltzer I also did a thread recently with my top 50 snuffs. There might be some in that list that appeal to you.
Thank you. I don’t plan on throwing anything out. I actually ordered 25 gr tins of Toque Coke, Almond Toast, and Toffee along with my WoS order. When my #22 started running low I mixed Toque Coke and Almond Toast to extend my WoS. Couldnt really taste the Toque but it extended my #22. Any other brands that have that fine flavor that WoS has?
If you are seeking complexity, try snuffs from Old Mill, Abraxas, and Sir Walter Scott
Well, to each their own I always say. However, one being disappointed with a few flavors does not a bad brand make. I have had many WoS snuffs that I absolutely hated but would not say that they are X times better or worse than any other brand. You seem to be beyond gimmicky basic flavors at an early stage which is good because you can appreciate some of the finer natural flavors in snuff. I would recommend giving these offerings from Toque a try; Berwick Brown, Spanish Gem, Whisky and Honey (regular or USA), and Quit. Roderick is more than capable of kicking out quality natural/classic flavored of snuff and I assure you, the flour is high quality. Not to be a Toque fan boy, but give credit where credit is due and don’t judge an entire line based off a few disagreeable to you personally flavors. I promise you most lines will have at least a few you don’t like.
MCCrystals Original and Genuine, this was my first and still one of my favorite snuffs. They use Camphor in it with a tiny amount of menthol, so you get the clearing and refreshing feeling while having the sweeter Camphor in it. It has very pleasing tobacco undertones, medium moisture and very easy to take. Beside this Toque Raspberry if another favorite, a very incredibly natural Raspberry not too overpowering or sweet which subsides to a combination of tobacco tone flavours. The Toque Raspberry you can buy either Toque Silver dollar raspberry with a small amount of menthol for that refreshing raspberry soda on a hot day kind of feel, or the Toque Raspberry without menthol.
If you are a quitting smoker and don’t find that your snuff has enough of a nicotine kick, I highly suggest buying some Toque Rustica and using it as a mixer, start at the 5:1 ratio. Rustica is some seriously strong stuff
It really depends on what type of snuff you prefer, if you like florals, fruity snuffs, plain S.P’s all the way through to chilly snuffs and the list goes on and on. As mentioned above, my taste changes depending on my mood. I may get a large order in , of handfuls of sample packs and I cant help myself but try them all the same day. There have been countless snuffs which absolutely repulsed me, either too sweet or too strong or complex of a scent. I cant tell you how many times ive tried the same snuff on a different occasion and fell in love. Its a very strange thing that always happens, I don’t know why ; but I’m not complaining One snuff you hate today may be your favorite tomorrow @basemant_shaman edit just for you
Please turn on your spell checker. I never won a spelling bee either. 8-X 8-X 8-X 8-X 8-X 8-X
I recommend Toque Whiskey and Honey if you like the Toast.
For complexity there’s tons of snuffs for you.
Abraxas is an A+ snuff
I personally am partial to WIlson’s, Molens, Old Mill, and Abraxas.
As I said before I bought a tin of WoS Irish High Toast 22 from a local cigar shop. On my second order from Mr Snuff I ordered a larger tin because I was running low. This new tin tastes quite a bit different. I can tell the new tin is a bit more moist. I actually prefer the tin I bought from the cigar shop. I imagine it had sat around for a while in the shop and it sat in an area where the owner smoked cigars. The taste is much more smokey and dry. I’m kind of dissapointed in the flavor from this tin.
When I was new to snuff, I ordered a small range of Toque and was similarly disappointed. I could get the Violet and Peppermint, but as far as I was concerned, all the others tasted the same and of nothing much. Amazing how much changes when your nose gets attuned. These days I could tell the difference from the other side of the room. Non-snuff users and newbies often just don’t have a well developed sense of smell.
Believe it or not, I actually decided early in my snuffing career that I had stumbled upon a secret nobody else knew. And that secret was that WE Garett plain scotch was so completely identical to F&T HDT that everyone who paid the premium price for HDT was a fool and I would stick with my 4 bucks for 30 grams of scotchy goodness. I still enjoy a little WE Garett when the mood strikes, but I remember revisiting HDT for the first time after actually developing a nose palate. Boy, was I wrong! It’s fun to wonder just how bad your senses were when you first started and where you are now.
My recommendation is to try as many well known and celebrated recipes as you can…“cheese and bacon” is not one of them, although people do enjoy it. Look for the “flagship” products from the different makers. People can be wrong, but usually the longer lasting recipes are that way for a reason. Also, mentally I think if you know that the recipe is highly regarded you will be more likely to power through any aversion to the initial sensation and seek out the positive and alluring essences. It’s very easy to dismiss a recipe on the first sniff if it comes across as a silly gimmick or experimental blend.
For example:
SG- Black Rappee
SG- Kendal Brown Original
Toque - Spanish Gem
Hedges (THE medicated snuff)
Morlaix
Gawith Apricot
Bernard DoppellFermentiert
Whatever toast is supposed to be the bee’s knees (I do like WoS Irish 22)
DaKralingse products based off old recipes
Maybe grab some scotches at the drug store (if they have them)
etc etc
If you don’t like them, you don’t like them, but at least it will expand your horizons.
It’s been a while but thank you for all of your advice. Out of that last WoS order Grand Cairo has become my absolute favorite go to snuff. The No 22 is still up there but I can’t get over the Grand Cairo. The Chili Chocolate is a nice shocking treat as well. In my first order I got some Toque Silver Dollar Medicated. I hated it at first but it has been a savior this winter season. I still don’t enjoy it for much more than a sinus opener but when I chase it with WoS Summer Berries I’m off for a great morning. I’m taking the advice to stick to the well known recipes. Currently waiting on my largest order yet. WoS - Best Dark, Queen’s Extra Strong, Strasbourg, and Tom Buck Extra Strong SP. (I am aware these are all SPs) F&T - Bordaeux, DR Jr Justice, Kendall Brown, Santo Domingo, and Princess Special. Dholakia Black and White 6 Photo - Begum Chap and Super Kalish I’m hoping I will find some gems here. My next experimental order will probably include some German snuffs. I really meant to order a couple Shmalzers but completely forgot.

You have some real gems in that order, and plenty of diversity too. I’m sure you will enjoy working through those
JosephJames pointed out to me that I probably won’t be able to get Grand Cairo for much longer so I’m going to go ahead and order one of the 260g tubs maybe 2. Any recommendations on a few good shmalzers to try? Or any other snuff types I may have yet to experience?
I think Bayern Prise counts as a schmaltzer. It’s really good, says I. Sternecker Staubinger and Echt Fresco are both schmaltzer types I enjoy. I am not an avid user of schmaltzer types of snuff, so I hope someone else will offer some insight.
This time of the year I really take to the Bernard 275 Jabre. Excellent festivities snuff…
@Okie, Hi bud, seeing as how you like WOS #22 so much I think you will find F&T High Dry Toast to be the King of the Hill so to speak, it is my very favorite snuff , be sure and add a tin to your next order sir as I think you will feel the same way. G’Day
