recommended beginner snuffs?

I am an American who is dying to try some snuff and I am getting ready to order some along with some swedish snus that I get from northerner.com , they dont offer a whole lot of variety but I want to know everyones opinion on which snuffs would be the best for someone to try who has never snuffed before. So please, list some snuffs that you feel would be ideal for a complete newcomer. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks

Northerner has THE BEST prices on Fribourg and Treyer. You can’t go wrong with those. Princes, Princes Special, and Santo Domingo are moister and courser and more beginner friendly, but all of them are good. Old Paris is somewhat beginner friendly too. Get Morlaix too for when your nose learns to handle it. Most of the Wilsons range are good for intermediate/advanced beginner level. Avoid the toasts for the time being. You can try them later in your career.

Welcome to the learning curve. Having access to this site you are not limited to “beginner” snuffs. Just forge ahead, we’ve got your back.

Wilsons Chocolate and Orange snuff if you have a sweet tooth. Wilsons Grand Cairo has some nose burn but it is quite nice. Heck, just grab any except a toast or scotch, but remember if you don’t like that one there are hundreds more, each different. Its not like trying cigarettes where the difference between one and another is only a matter of degree. Many snuffs are substantively different. Snuffreviews.com might help you decide, but remember tastes are very different.

Hey there Jbruckus, it may be a good idea to pick up one of each ‘main’ type of snuff, so you can get a feel for what you’ll like, and go from there. You may want to pick up one or two from each brand that you find interesting- if you discover you have an easier time with moist varieties, you’ll know to branch in that direction, and if you prefer a medium or dry, or a coarser/finer grind, you can also expand on those accordingly. Usually it’s good to have several different ‘go-to’ snuffs anyway, so that you can vary your lineup according to your mood; as with food, since there are so many different kinds of snuff, with a small collection you should be able to have something to suit the taste you’ve worked up. Something sweet, something savory or smoky or floral… I’d say pick up one of a few different categories: a sweet one, a fruity one, a floral one, an anise, a menthol, an herbal, and a couple of plains, all varying on the scale of dry/medium/moist as well as coarse/medium/fine. I wouldn’t worry too much about anything super uber fine/dry to start with unless you’re feeling masochistic, but like Juxtaposer mentioned, anything you pick up and have an aversion to at first, you may learn to enjoy as you learn and your tastes develop, so don’t be afraid- everyone is different, and some new users take a liking to bone dry snuff immediately, too! Snuff is affordable enough that you should be able to grow a small collection without having to pay an arm and a leg.

If I may add as one who only recently made the transition from novice to journeyman: When that first order arrives, you’ll want to jump right in, so keep in mind that some snuffs (especially good, fresh ones) have a marked ammonia note at first which will dissipate gradually. I scrapped a perfectly nice tin of Wilson’s SP because I didn’t know this, and I didn’t come back to the brand until I got a bulk sample that had a little time to breathe.

I know the request is for beginner, but I would not totally exclude a toast. It may take a little effort being so fine and dry, but the toast is one to warm up to, and once done, they often become a fave. So, I’d recommend the least expensive toast, which I am guessing is Wilsons 22? But then also, I think Toque’s toasts are very good, I really like that Lime Toast. I also find these do not stop me up like others can do.

Poschl Ozona President This was my first snuff. Very moist and course won’t go to the back of throat or lungs so it’s beginner friendly. The Menthol Camphor or whatever they put in is very invigorating. This was my first snuff. I use it during the day because it’s not messy and go to the finer ground drier snuffs at night. If they have it a sampler pack of the WOS (Wilsons of Shire) is a excellent beginning I bought 1 and have had great fun experimenting with the 6 different flavors. The only flavor I didn’t like was the Coffee and Cream but I’ll revisit it in a week or so and they say that sometimes your taste changes or the product ages and the result is different. By the way if you want punishment get the Dholakia White or Dholakia Black and some Rooster these will give you something to graduate to. Snuffreviews dot com is a great place to go to see different reviews of the snuffs.

By the way I started by ordering the President Ozona from northerner but found there selection is very limited If you are in the U.S you might want to go to mrsnuff com or nicotinerush com for a large selection.

@jbruckus I’m reasonably new to snuff meself and welcome to a wonderfully fascinating world! I’ll second Nachmans suggestion of the WoS Chocolate/Orange. Great flavor and for me it was a perfect balance of grind and moisture to learn ‘how’ to sniff a pinch. And for perfecting your insuflation technique by all means try out some toasts or an American Scotch. They are so fine a dry that it’s kinda sink or swim. Once you learn how to successfully take a scotch I’ thinkin’ you can take any other snuff out there! @tomzgreat good to see you found your way here tom. I’m olderthandirt from ECF, greetings!

I like tomzgreat’s advice. The thing about the Poschl snuffs is they are very easy to take. They won’t blow past the septum and any chimpanzee could successfully snuff them with no hassles. They are a bit heavy on the menthol but that never bothered me. The Wilson’s sampler packs look like a great deal but don’t forget to check out the Toque 10g bundle deal on their web site too. Just be warned that some of their toasts require a bit of practice if you are not used to finer grinds. I’d probably advise beginners to avoid toasts and scotches at first, but I started out on Garret Sweet & Mild and found that it taught me early on to sniff properly. Just jump in the pool and start swimming I guess. And don’t toss out a tin because you don’t like it at first. Some snuffs have a way of growing on you later or improving after they’ve sat around a bit. Think of it as a harem. Some days you feel like a blonde, other days you may want a redhead or a brunette. Snuff is great!

@Spyro That harem analogy is one of the best one’s I’ve seen yet!

Thanks so much for all of the info. I added 3 tins of snuff to my snus order from Northerner. They are F&T Macoubra, Wilsons grand cairo, and mcCrystals O&G. I wanted to add more but I try to keep my orders limited to about 30$ a month. If I end up falling in love with snuff then perhaps I will stop ordering snus altogether and just get the snuff. From what I’ve read, the snuff seems to be a little cheaper in most cases, and lasts longer than snus does. I’m surprised by all the feedback, you guys are great, thanks for all the help!!

Oh no jb, you’ll just be adding the snuff to your snus use (-; They go together so very well!

Otd Nice to see you over here. Since I started using snuff my e-cig usage is at the minimum. Snuff gives that sudden Nic Hit that E-cigs lack. And as The Wiz says it’s " the dessert of tobaccos" and I love desert. So many varieties to choose from and inexpensive too. Wow!! I use Snus for nic maintenance Thunder Frosted being my favorite and than snuff for a lift and it’s working well. Can’t remember when I smoked my last cigarette. Only problem is that Snuff is such an odd habit that I have to keep it Low Key.

For sure tomz. The vape is greatly reduced with the use of snus and snuff.

I think someone said this, but the main thing is to avoid toasts and scotchs until your nose is used to snuff. In actual fact, pretty much everything else is ok to start with because the grind and strength of snuffs is quite standardised across the range of brands; the real differences are in the flavourings. Check out the various ‘how to take snuff’ threads if you find it hard to take at first. Enjoy!

@ tomzgreat: I’m glad you mentioned that e-cigs seem to lack the immediate nic hit, as I was on the fence about trying vaping. The main pro being, of course, simulating smoking (since I was a smoker for 18 years), but my con being, well…I work writing diagnostic manuals for Ford. Every day I bury myself in wiring diagrams, circuit faults, and trouble codes. Being the defiant cuss that I am, all this has resulted in my personal backlash to modern technology. I like snuffing for its nic but also the anachronism of it. I’d like nothing more than to drive a Model T or a Stanley steam car to work and park among all these new cars (the plastic clutch pedal on my Saturn is going; and that just reinforces my convictions). What I’m getting at is, I was hesitant to try any form of tobacco that actually required electricity, instead of pinching, lipping, or setting on fire. But now that you mention the nic hit isn’t that immediate, you’ve sewn it up for me. I’ll stick to snus and snuff, and if I’m really jonesing for a cig I’ll have one. My wife and I usually keep a pack around the house; I often joke that if we had a dispenser that gave me just one before bed I’d be ok. So far I’ve stayed honest…

@jamesS. remember the Jerry Reed song “Lord, Mr. Ford”? LOL, haha, reminds me of what you’re talking about!

I stopped two years ago now with the help of snuff, which stopped me going insane. I’d snuffed for years on and off but never exclusively. The approach - afer many, many failed attempts - that helped me the most was loosing that entire guilt thing associated with smoking. I just said if I really want one I’ll have one; and I have several times. But day to day its just snuff. However, I’m convinced that by NOT saying I’ll never have a cig again I just made the whole process possible. Cigarettes are a habit coupled with an addiction; once you break the habit by subsitituting altenative rituals - taking a pinch from a nice box, drawing the moment out, enjoying the flavour, you start to put some distance between yourself and cigarettes. For me the periods between cigarettes are getting longer and loger. I had my first cig since October last night at a family Xmas party; it was completely revolting. But it does take time to start building up in your mind a negative picture of cigarettes - let’s face it, when most of us stop we feel almost bereaved - but it really is an illusion. If the health fascists allowed it I’m convinced that properly worked out cessation programmes using snuff would save the lives of millions.
