I keep reading all the great pipe tobacco stories here and I would like to give it a try. I’ll need to buy a pipe. What is the best beginner-friendly pipe I could buy? I don’t want to spend a lot of money on it in case it’s not for me. Thanks all.
I would suggest either a corncob or a clay in a style you like or a Dr Plums baby pipe if you wan something a little more “permanent”
corncob. if you do decide to keep smoking, this should last you forever as a sturdy, reliable pipe knock about too.

Go for a mainstream Savinelli, Peterson or Vauen, 9mm filter It’s great for a mainstream begin.
Cob or clay all the way. There is some wisdom in using a clay I reckon actually, in that they don’t ‘ghost’ as badly if you use the pipe for a few different blends. Also good for teaching you a better pipe smoking technique i.e. too hot = less sips et al. Having said that cobs, are bulletproof, ready to smoke from the off, and very cheap… Plus you’ll look like Popeye the Sailor man!! :))
Thanks all. Looks like the general consensus is for a corncob pipe. I’ll pop into my local tobacco shop to see what they have later this week.

Got a Meerschaum corn cob pipe at the tobacconist in my small town. I was surprised at the variety of pipe tobaccos they had in stock. I wasn’t expecting such variety and was unprepared for it so I ended up getting a tin of Peterson University Flake. Now I just need to figure out what to do with it lol. Thanks again for the info, if I enjoy this I can see it being an interesting once in awhile treat.
Congrats on the cob! Toss the filter ASAP (assuming it has one). PUF is very nice. You may have to let it dry a bit before smoking. Flakes are probably not the best form of pipe tobacco for a novice. I’d suggest picking up a pouch of Carter Hall to get your feet wet–it is very nice in a cob. Flakes take a bit of finesse and patience to master (and still lots of re-lights).

Thanks. I left the filter in but did some reading today and see that most recommend getting rid of it. It is now gone. I filled my pipe this morning and had a nice smoke on my way into work (half hour commute) and smoked the rest on the way home. I was not sure what to expect as far as nicotine goes and I find it satisfied just fine. I had to re-light many times so yeah I’ll need to practice things. I don’t recall seeing Carter Hall but looked up some reviews and it sounds like the no nonsense type of tobacco I’d like. Ha ha, yes, no end of pipe tobaccos–same as snuff. Flake is great, but it takes practice to master. Starting out, dry a flake for half an hour, then “rub it out” (crumble it up). Burns easier that way. The “fold and stuff” method gives a more complex smoke, but you will have re-lights. I love Carter Hall for drive-time–packed correctly, it is a tasty smoke and pretty much smokes itself. Not much for a nic-hit, but nice. Once you get into pipe tobacco, the sky’s the limit–Burly, Virginia, Perique, Latakia, VaPers, Lat blends and endless variations thereof. Then there are the airomatics (which I am no longer much of a fan of–same with snuff) but many people love 'em. If you’re looking at buying some tobacco on-line, and like a serious nic-hit, look at Old Joe Krantz–it is a Perique heavy blend that will seriously get your attention.
