Rattray’s

S

has anyone had rattray’s pipe tobacco? is it any good? worth buying?

W

Jack, I haven’t tried it but is has a great reputation amongst the cognoscenti. Have you looked on tobaccoreviews.com?

J

There is word that Orlick is making Dunhill blends again. Just a heads up.

J

It’s fine, quality tobacco. Red Rapparee, Hal o’ the Wynd and Marlin Flake are among my favorite blends.

S

@wildwilliam it’s the first i’ve heard of tobaccoreviews. i shall look it up.

W

Good Jack, it’s a very informative site.

N

I think Hal O’ The Wynd is one of the best virginias, with Old Gowie not to far behind but I was extremely dissapointed in Marlin Flake, I found it has a really soapy taste that I find off-putting to say the least. I have wanted to try Red Rapparee, Black Mallory and Brown Clunee for a while now but haven’t got around to ordering them. And I honestly don’t know how a pipe smoker with access to the internet doesn’t know about tobaccoreviews.com

S

@n9inchnails: well dude, i just got into pipe smoking a few weeks ago.

P

Rattray’s blends are very highly regarded, especially by lovers of pure Virginias. I’ve tried Marlin Flake. It’s obviously top quality leaf, but it just didn’t suit my palate. But then I prefer a nice helping of Perique along with my Virginia, and perhaps a bit of Turkish, too.

B

@saucy I used to like “The Professor’s Pipe Page and Tobacco Bar” when I smoked pipes more regularly. The photo of him on there is nice…looking into an ice-box full of tobacco with a frustrated look on his face, wondering what to smoke next…lol

A

@Juxta i dont think they ever stoped making the Dunhill blends, they are avaiable at German online shops , i think the problem is with USA distribution I received a tin of Standard Mixture last week from a Brazilian vendor and iam pretty sure its not an old tin I may be wrong though

R

The Dunhill´s were never off the German market and they´re distributed by Gebr. Heinemann here these days. All in 50g tins, except EMP and MM965 which are available in 100g tins as well.

Well I don’t really like pipe reviews. I’ve not found one usefull yet. I find snuff reviews usefull. Pipe reviews remind me of more of movie reviews in that everytime I read one I feel more like I’ve learned what aspects of tobacco a person enjoys. Often when I read about a favorite blend even when someone seems to feel the degree of love for the blend all I can think is that how you smoke and what type of pipe you use really effects the tobacco a lot. Reminds me of one of my earliest pipes I owned all my favorite blends sucked in it and many blends I had previously hated where suddenly showing wonderfull nuances that I’d never picked up before. Just my opnion.

N

When I look at pipe tobacco reviews I look for what people didn’t like in the blend, so I tend to read the negative reviews more and if I find what people don’t like in the blend are things that I do like in a blend then I’ll give the blend a try.

B

that is a brilliant idea. I’ll try that. I often do that with food and video game reviews look at the negative and see if what people hate is something I like. Definatly will try.
