Color: Redish Brown Texture: Medium Fine, and feels like slightly higher moisture content than other dry snuffs. Nicotine Content: Medium High Burn: Medium to Light Scent: Very Mild Plain Scotch This is a great all day snuff. The plain scotch scent is very mild and slightly sweeter than other scotch snuffs like Navy or W.E. Garrett. The scent is not as smokey as other scotches either. Interestingly enough you can take a pinch and very quickly forget the scent altogether because it is so mild. I like this attribute because my wife doesn’t particularly care of the scotch scented snuff when I kiss her (I know, go figure) and she doesn’t seem to mind this one because it is so mild and doesn’t possess the smokey finish many of them do. Also, I notice that the moisture content seem slightly higher than other dry snuffs I’ve tried, this helps to keep the snuff from hitting the back of your throat makes it easier to take a pinch outdoors on a windy day. This snuff has been placed in my top three all day snuffs along with Square Snuff and Stoker’s plain.
Good review!..I alike with you about Railroad Mills. You, Americans, are a very lucky snuffers. I think you have the highest quality snuffs and also a wide offer. Thanks to our fellow Troutstroker I may try ALL the American Dry Snuffs…and sincerely, I am really satisfied with them. Pedro
see i found that scent to stay a very long time along with prolonged burn that last for 20 minutes or more. i did not find it as strong as rooster or garretts but a bit higher in nic then dental. it is not one of my favorites for taste. how about stokers? how high is it in the nic factor compared to the other US snuffs? which one is it most like in flavor, hit, etc.?
Wow, this is a wonderful scotch snuff. I guess it might seem a little “plain” if you are used to extremely smokey scotches like Rooster or Garrett. I however, appreciate it for it’s smoothness, which is probably why I also like Starr. The funny thing about this snuff though, and this may be an anomaly, but I detect the faintest hint of sweetness. It works well with the slight hint of smoke though. Anyway, it’s impossible for me to have a favorite scotch, as I’m quickly becoming a big fan of all the American snuff I was ignorant enough to overlook when I first started, but RR mills plain certainly ranks highly amongst my collection.
In some of the reviews I’ve read for it, folks compared it to HDT - anyone who’s had both have a comparison? Was thinking of tossing some RR Mills Plain on my next order.
@FyL, I don’t think the RR mills has any of the “nutiness” that most toasts’ seem to have. RR mills also seems a bit moister than both F&T HDT and WOS’ IHT #22. But, I think if you have already tried Toasts’ and like them, you will certainly enjoy RR mills.
@FyL & Tc2642 I would AbSOLUtely include it on the next order! Even though it is supposed to be plain, I was very surprised when I first had it. It’s complex in its own PLAIN way. TC, you may be on something with the slight sweet malt/chocolate that you detect-I could never catagorize it myself, I just knew it was tasty.
I bought a tin of this the other day to try my first Scotch, I think it is an acquired taste. I keep trying.
@macalpe: I would agree that many American snuffs are the “highest quality” , but not any higher than European and Indian snuffs of similar “highest quality”. But there is not NEARLY the variety in American snuffs…for the most part they are all similar. Three that I use, WE Garrett, Square, and 3 Thistle, are very similar and easily interchangeable
To me RR plain is almost like an in between Scotch- It lacks the burnt harshness of some of the bolder Scotches while it lacks the artificial sweetness of some of the Sweets. RR has a natural tobacco sweetness and a nice smokiness
I did end up buying the RR Mills plain on that next order back then, and it was good. No replacement for a real toast (ended up with a 1/2 lb tub from that sale Wilsons had going on) - but I tell ya, I really do like the plain scotch. I turn to W.E. Garrett when I want a big nic fix and the BBQ smoke scent - but the RR Mills Plain is great for increasing the strength of English snuff, for trying out flavorings, or when I’m in the mood for strength without so much burn. It’s still strong, can still cause pain if you sniff it too far back, but it’s a great one to have around. Definitely glad I got some.
Well I guess I owe it to practicing with the Toque Toasts that got me to the point that I could start enjoying the scotches. This is really my first scotch that I have even tried and now getting taking a scotch better, well it is an enjoyable sensation, but one for now I say needs to be in moderation with moister snuffs on hand. Ken
I thought it was a very bland snuff but at the same token, it would be perfect for mixing
