Quick storage questions (re decanting) ...

I have just received a number of 25g tins today, and have a dozen new 70ml clip top glass jars to transfer them to (thanks to the wisdom in the forum). Do i need to prep the jars for storage in any way (cleaning/sterilising) and is there any recommended methods? I’m not a “clean freak”, I just don’t want my stash exposed to more than is sensible

As you never know how, where or how long they have been stored before you bought them, it’s not a bad idea to wash them in hot water and detergent. Rinse with hot water, dry and then you’re ready to roll.

I just rinsed (with left over purified water) and dried my jars before filling em. I haven’t had any problems at all with the jars or snuff. That was about 6 months ago.

@ermtony Sounds good to me :-bd I was actually tempted to do that as a matter of course, but thought it best to prey on the wisdom of the elders first in case there was another prescribed route. Many thanks for the quick reply as this not only means I can start decanting them, but more importantly that I can start sampling them with confidence in case I don’t get back to any of them for a while :smiley: @distaind Thank you, that makes me feel more confident too

@50ft_trad…cool thread…thanks

Thanks AANYCAARDS OK, next question … :slight_smile: Using the stuff you are keeping in these jars: With these 70ml jars (which look about perfect for 25g) I’d feel fine popping them open to load a snuffbox and reclosing them if I was going to use it all in a short space of time, as ultimately they’re not holding that much. I assume though that for an occasional snuff used over a longer period, there would come a point where the air in the jar defeats using the jar in the first place. This seems particularly relevant for the guys who buy 250g or 500g bulk bags. Halfway down the jar, is half a jar of air! The two obvious (?) thoughts that come to mind are to decant to smaller containers, OR to put something in on top of the snuff to displace/reduce the volume of air. How do people overcome this with their stocks?

It is my thinking, and I could be wrong, that only the top layer of snuff comes into contact with the air. I have my 25g snuffs packed pretty tightly into 60ml jars. I do sometimes decant into a snuff box or tin, but lately I have just been snuffing right from the jar. I feel that the in the short time it is open, the snuff under the top layer is not impacted by exposure. I have not seen any deterioration in my snuff.

Thanks for your input @fbones24 but with respect that sounds like it’s defeating the purpose of the jar. Wuith each opening there is an exchange of air (old for new) and from an evaporation standpoint, I’m sure snuff wicks moisture through and will equalise itself throughout. No doubt someone will be along soon to correct me if I’m talking out of the wrong orifice :smiley: Good to hear it’s working for you personally though. Mind if I ask how long a 60ml jar is lasting you?

I have only been snuffing for a few months @50ft_trad so it’s hard to say. I can tell you that a 60ml jar of FUBAR Grunt will go pretty quick over my way. For the most part, I decant if I am taking snuff with me. When I’m at home, if I want to snuff something that’s in a jar, I just feel it is not worth the effort. Some nights I want to take a few different snuffs ans I just take it out of the jars.

I have some small clay discs I primarily use for maintaining the humidity in my pipe-tobacco jars that i have also begun using in my larger snuff containers. The issue with the wicking aspect of snuff (which also allows absorption of nicotine from particles of snuff not making direct contact with your mucus membranes, as per an earlier discussion) can be circumvented by merely maintaining a humidity at (or a least fairly close to) the same level of your snuff. The discs are cheap, effective, and MADE for maintaining moisture in tobacco, so it was a real no-brainer for me.

This is how I do it. I store bulk snuff in either 600g or 400g airtight glass jars. I decant from those bulk jars 50g in to small glass screwtop airtight jars. From the 50g jars I decant in to 5g smash boxes for daily snuffing. I keep around 4-6 smash boxes on the go in my rotation at any one time. When bulk is around half full, I refill it. This method provides me with very fresh snuff at all times. No wastage.

@SnuffySnuff…so when the 400g or 600g are around half full. Do you reorder? ( or is that when you crack open the oak barrels stored in room next to wine cellar and refill with small trowel?.. Lol ) No seriously, you must mean you are reordering when the 400 or 600 get half full? And do you bring what’s on the bottom of the 400 or 600 to the top and refill the bottom with new snuff? How many snuff you do this with? What type? Some experienced narrow there snuff down to a dozen favorites… Newbies like me are still playing the field

Yes, when either a 600g or 400g jar is half full, I reorder 200-300g, put that in a new jar and put the old jar remains on top in the new jar. Then your snuff at the bottom of the old jar is getting used up first. I have 38 x 600g jars (mostly toque, but also some McCs) and about 12 x 400g jars (mostly WoS and SG). I’ve still got a way to go. There are about another 25 snuffs I want in bulk. Should reach that goal by the end of this year. Then I’ll be set for life!

@50ft_trad A good article to read here: http://ermtony.pbworks.com/w/page/23670787/Snuff%20Storage Also I wouldn’t worry too much about that air exchange. The storage jar should never be open for more than a few seconds at a time anyway, its really too little to cause too much concern. I have some bulk snuffs that are three and four years old here that still are moist and reeking of ammonia when I open them. I am careful to open get what I want and close again as fast as I can. Have the snuff box or tin open first and closed last, the bulk is then open the minimum time. I have a small ladle I decant with.

Fantastic! Thanks @Xander EDIT: First job is to rehouse Western Glory from a GH tap box which is pissing snuff out everywhere 8-| Are they always this bad?

@Xander yes, that system really does work. I have some jars that have been stored for quite a few years now. The snuff is still in excellent condition. @50ft_trad Tap boxes (aka Sneeze boxes) are always that bad for water moistened snuffs (which mainly means English/Scottish snuffs). Snuffs which are partly oil moistened (German and Indian snuffs mostly) do much better in sneeze boxes but even those will deteriorate in time.

I had little luck with the wire bail jars. stopped using mine and went with plastic lid screw tops glass packers jars. If I were to use them again I may place a piece of plastic rap between the top and rubber seal. I don’t have problems with the big ones just the smaller ones. Like these two

Just a little off topic…got this little jar in a thrift store for 25 cents… 27cents with tax… What a ripoff…Lol Boy… Did they make stuff great in the ole USA back in the day It’s a old cosmetic jar, so well made, with thick glass, and great angles to the glass. Glass was clean, but removed the liner from the cap and cleaned out whatever little residue was under the liner…put my blast gin and tonic in it…I would love to have bout 100 of these or more… Wishful thinking
