quick newbie question

this may or is going to sound silly ok lol but do you just blow your nose gently or do you also wipe the inside of your nose out with tissue ? I have been doing both but now my nose is sore and dry and well kinda wonder if im just ment to lightly blow and not wipe the inside out it ? I just did not know if you were ment to just leave what ever snuff is in your nose their or are you ment to get it all out ? sounds such a silly question but if i dont ask i wont learn

I am still pretty new to snuffing, so I am by no means an expert. I usually just blow my nose about 10-15 minutes after snuffing. Periodically throughout the day, especially on a large volume day, I will wipe the inside of my nose out. I favor a hankie to a tissue. If you wash your hankies before using I think they are softer than most tissues, and reusing them seems less wastefull than throwing away countless tissues.

My nose got kinda raw at first from all the blowing and wiping but after a week or so the skin around my nostrils toughened up. I also use some burts bees lip balm around my nostrils if it starts to get sore.

I’m pretty new as well. I follow the mantra of the long time snuffers here. I blow when my nose tells me to. I don’t use mentholated snuffs too often and, can go a couple of hours without blowing. Each morning when I’m in the shower, I’ll do the nose gargle to clean out and, I’m ready for the new day!! BTW: I prefer hankerchiefs as well.

Hi Dave Your question isn’t silly at all - when I was a newbie here I asked very similar questions and on the whole this site is very ‘newbie friendly’ so don’t worry about asking questions :o) I recommend buying some snuff hankercheifs, they don’t have to be flashy, just patterned (if you use a white hankercheif it will look like you’ve run out of toilet paper!) use them to blow your nose and if you want you can wipe the inside of your nose. Basically do whatever you need in order to feel comfortable. There aren’t really any ‘hard and fast’ rules about this, just keep using snuff and eventually you will develop your own technique. Some users here recommend getting hold of a nasal cleaner. Its like a small hand-pump which you can use to squirt saline solution (salt-water) up your nose to clean it out. Personally I’ve never needed to use one as blowing my nose does the trick but its personal preferance really. This is a good site for hankies: http://www.snuffstore.co.uk/snuff-handkerchiefs-c-48\_64.html Usually your nose will let you know when it needs blowing, I don’t think there is any need to follow any sort of timetable with regards to blowing your nose :o) When you first start snuffing your nose will get sensitive. Mine did too and its not pleasant but if you keep snuffing over time the dryness or soreness will disappear. Sniffing fine powder up your nose is just something your nose has to get used to. It doesn’t take very long to adjust. If you are snuffing and you find your nose is getting sore just treat the skin around your nose with a moisturiser cream and leave the snuff alone for a little while. As for leaving trace amounts of snuff up your nose I really wouldn’t worry. Without wanting to sound gross but you never really get all the snuff completely out anyway. If you really want to get it all out you can just blow your nose repeatedly and when most of the snuff is out just dig the rest out with a finger but you might as well just leave it up there if you are going to be sniffing more up there later anyway…as I said your body is good at complaining when its not happy so if your nose is itching or running etc just blow it until you feel comfortable again. One last piece of advice: Clean out your nose just before you go to bed, if you sleep with snuff up your nose it can sometimes create problems for you in the middle of the night with congestion etc so its always wise to blow your nose before you sleep. Sorry for the huge post but I went through exactly the same process that you are going through and we’re here to share info and experiences :o) Hope that helps

I sometimes use a salt-water spray before blowing my nose. Works well for me.

the single most imprtant thing about taking snuff is that if it works for you then its fine
