Questions on Wooden Snuffboxes

Until recently, I’ve been using old plastic American dip containers to put my nasal snuff in, and it has worked out well.  Recently, I broke down and purchased two Patrick Collins snuffboxes, which are exquisite.  The downside of these boxes, at least for me, is their size.  I would prefer something that holds between an ounce and a half ounce.

I gather Patrick doesn’t make anything quite this big–at least I haven’t seen anything.  If this is the case, does anybody have any experience with the bigger wooden snuffboxes that are new?  I bought a wood box about a year ago in which the lid is held in place with magnets.  The problem is the lid is so loose that it’s nonfunctional.  I want to avoid buying something like this again.

The heartwood slide boxes are not bad, not as well made as the PC boxes but do the job. They have a range of sizes. I also found the PC boxes a bit small and fiddly for my taste. The heartwood boxes have a really bad finish on them, at least the two I bought, so I sanded them down and oiled them.

You will find them here http://www.heartwood.com/ in the secret boxes section.

The only other option, to my mind, is a wooden flip top box off ebay, either the Jurassiene boxes or the clover leaf. They turn up pretty regularly and often cheap. Just make sure there are no splits or chips and they should work fine. These boxes were made in a range of sizes so you should find one to suit.

The largest wooden ones I’ve come across are the ‘Sharrow snuff’ boxes, which hold a good deal. They may be heartwood (can’t remember) but the online dealers have them, I don’t carry one anymore because they are too big for my personal taste so they might be what you are after.

The Sharrow boxes are made by heartwood.

@Snuffster and @khlaid, thank you for your help.  It’s too bad Patrick doesn’t make a bigger box, such as one the size of the Triple Tech except without all the added extras.  Since I can’t inspect any purchase before I buy, I want to avoid a situation of getting another box with a bad lid.

I’m guessing a lot of people don’t like the bigger boxes since it is easy for snuff to dry out.  With my Collins boxes, I simply keep them in my pockets unless I’m actually using them.  This seems to keep the snuff from desiccating and helps the wood maintain a constant environment.

Thanks again for your help.

No problem.

I have 3 heartwood snuffboxes.

One works smoothly and easily, one is a bit of a tight fit but it works well, the third’s lid has a slight warp in it but it still slides fairly easily. None of them leak and I am happy with all of them.

Given a couple of years, friction and abrasion should wear the tight fitting one down to the point where it slides easily.

@Dunnyveg Just been to the Patrick Collins site and see that he also now has a larger box. This is listed as a dice box but works just the same. www.woodensnuffbox.com

@khalid, thank you. Actually, I was just looking at Collins’ dice box and was wondering the same thing. Patrick just indicated in another thread that he’s considering making new snuffboxes before Christmas.

I hope that he does make some more. I have the tripletech in zebrawood and love it! A bigger box would be nice, but I haven’t found one that even close to the quality of a PC box. If anyone tries the dice box would like to know how it worked out…

I’m wondering if the classic “dugout” for single-puff smoking might be an adequate snuff box? Seems to me the area intended to hold the “bat” (pipe) could accomodate a spoon instead, and the larger (4" tall) boxes sure would hold a heap of snuff. Opinions?

@Uncle_Squinty I had since gave mine away or lost it ,Oh who remember the stone age. Yes good Idea ,I seen sniffers that look exactly like the bat. But a spoon would work too. I just carry the snuffhouse.org plastic box, well several of them holstered to my belt. They serve me well and are priced under $8. The old POWER HITTER should hold at lease 1/4 lb of snuff just need to extend the holder part.

The German style snuffboxes resemble dugouts, and actually serve the purpose a bit better. We have a member here who makes them, @Georg, and I think Snuff Gear sold them.
