Questions about my SG Snuffs

Okay so I got a huge order of snuff in, and with it my first 25g tins of SG. I got Vanilla, Apple, and Scotch Black. My assumption was that all the blatant flavored ones (fruit, vanilla ect.) would be the same consistancy and moisture. When I opened my Vanilla, you could hear the air rushing in, I never heard such a satisfying noise, a total guarentee that it is fresh. The snuff was a medium/fine grind I guess, definantly more coarse than WoS HDT and all the toques I tried, and therefore it was very easy to take, I filled my turn tin at night, and the next day at night I still had a couple pinches left, I figured since that little portion was pretty dry it would hit my throat, but it didn’t. SG Vanilla is a really nice snuff.
Anyway, the quandry is that I assumed apple would be the same type of consistancy, but it is not. The tin was vacuum sealed like the vanilla one, however the tin had some significant dents in the bottom, and the top does not re-fit very tight at all. The apple is more of a light brown color, and a fine grind, the vanilla is a dark brown/black color and is more of a medium grind. The apple is also dryer than the vanilla, not a lot dryer, but not a little dryer either (it has also dried out slightly more since it does not seal as well.) When I take a pinch directly out of the tin, it is rich in that crisp apple flavor, but once it has been sitting in a snuff box (my turn tin) for a few hours a lot of the moisture is gone and the apple flavor is gone. The vanilla lost some flavor after being in it for a few hours, but not as fast and as much as the apple. Are the SG flavors always different like this? Is there a chance I will get an apple tin one day that is darker and coarser like the vanilla? Are my snuffs completely normal and there is nothing wrong? Either way, SG is definantly one of my favorite brands right now, based on the snuffs that I tried. Tomorrow I will probably try the viking ones. Oh btw, the SG scotch black one has a scent that reminds me of copenhagen snuff. The level of coarseness that it is at seems undesireable to me because of how the grains don’t really stick together at all, maybe its a little dry or somthing, either way I also like this one very much. All 3 are excellent, I just wish the apple had a consistancy more similar to vanilla.

Indeed you have discoverd the pleasure of opening a vacuum tin, and that “whooomph” sound is indeed very satifying! My basic answer is that Samuel Gawith have about 6 or 7 different base snuffs (grind/moisture combinations) on which they impart various flavors. I’ve not tried the Vanilla, but the Apple uses the same base as one of their SPs and a number of the fruit flavors. My own experience is that Apple is a very fleeting flavor due to the basic lack of pungency of the fruit. Even if this is scented artificially then they have captured the nature of a true apple scent, but also its delicacy. As moisture evaporates, it will take with it the scents (oils). Best to use this one fresh and keep it sealed. Take out only what you can use at a time. The Scotch Black should be very moist, but its less moist than London Brown. It should be really clumpy. This is one you kind of have to shove in to use.

Yes that ‘wooomph’ haha it is so satisfying. Um did anyone else notice the picture I posted with this? Is it gone or am I just not seeing it?

its there

Just go my first tin of Samuel Gawith 2011 Christmas snuff but how the hell should i open the tin? Never got a tin that has been so hard to open.

Put a coin in the groove and turn it like a key.

@cstokes4 Thanks for the help, I must try that next time i’m craving snuff.

2€ coins work well as 50p sterling! Rest of the world might have some problems .

Quarters do well

I’m a cheap ass I just use a penny

or if the coin don’t work easily try a standard screwdriver. Longer = more leverage right?

It depends on where the fulcrum is.

lol! What’s that formula equation again? Lever, fulcrum and…?  Nevermind…

pennies nickles quarters and dollar coins work fine for american coins.

What about dimes? I like dimes.

Dimes can be the best! Sometimes a quarter is too thick. We need a coin with the diameter of a quarter, but with the thickness of a dime.

I find that dimes are too small and thin, the bigger and thicker the coin is the more effective, unless of course the coin is too thick to fit in the groove which I have not come across yet.

Coin trick worked wonderful and that ‘‘whoomph’’ sound was just nice. Definetly fresh snuff and i was surprised how moist it was.

What kind of snuff is it?

What I can say for certain is that I’ve had pipe tobacco tins where the groove was to small to accomidate a quarter (the SG tins I think?), unless you put enough muscle in it to actually bend the metal groove. Maybe it’s harder when you’re dealing with the curvy corner of a rectangular tin.

This must be one of the most boring posts ever…
