Question for Roderick

Although I won’t lie, my main allegiance is with SG, I can’t say that I don’t enjoy Toque on many occasions. The scents are all there. I have not tried all of Toque’s varieties, by any means, but do you have any coarse, moist, plain snuff? I notice that Toque is all the same color and texture. I feel that maybe the grind and moistness could affect the duration of scent. Have you experimented with different grinds, Roderick? I ask only because I am a fan of coarse/moist/plain snuffs, but even scented snuff is great when you can form it into a pellet and just put it up there, you know? I really think that your notoriety and craftsmanship have reached a point where you should try different grinds with varying degrees of moistness. But that is just one humble snuffer’s opinion.

Berwick Brown.

Just what I was going to say.

Berwick Brown, indeed. Toque’s first rapee? Toque has three basic grinds. The Berwick Brown, the standard and the toast. The toast is used on Whiskey Honey, Bourbon, Cheese & Bacon, and any one that has “Toast” in the name. C’mon, Toque has been in business 4 years. Samuel Gawith has been in business 214 years. Guess which one has had more time to experiment and perfect all the different grinds and textures? I don’t give my loyalty so easily, If you make good snuff, I’ll buy it. Toque is pretty amazing considering the time scale. Also SG should not be allowed to make fruit snuffs. (Except apple) Toque has the best fruit snuffs on the market, and SG has some that are…well…not so good. Where SG excels is in the blending of specific tobacco types and some specific herbs (mostly lavender). Maybe in 210 years Roderick will be as good.

Xander hit this one on the head. While I love SG, some of their snuffs are not so great. But, they do have some excellent ones as well. Toque also has some amazing, innovative snuffs. Toast & Marmalade comes to mind.

Fair enough.

Roderick@ You have a great company, and the learning curve has got to be interesting. I found the Berwick Brown to be a delightful departure in grinds, I found it instantly pleasing! Best of luck with 2010 introductions, many wonderful things to come no doubt, I am still eagerly awaiting a Rustica based snuff. Cudos-

oop, whisper

I have to disagree with you. To me the Toque grind/moisture is the best in the market. The German guys are too course and wet the Americans too dry. Toque to me just has a perfect consistency.

Over recent months I have come to enjoy Toque snuffs more and more, whilst Samuel Gawiths snuffs have remained tucked away. I think Toque are usually spot on with the grind and moisture. Why do they need to adopt other manufacturer’s styles?

@xander @sandy how about you two relaxing. sorry you feel that SG blows. I never expected you to feel the same as I do, apparently I need to feel the way you guys do, though, right? It’s snuff. Next time I post I will not fail to mention how great Toque is, ok guys? That way you won’t be mad at me and berate me, ok?

@saucy_jack, on this forum everybody, including you, are free to say how they feel about any snuff. We do not have to agree and I’m pretty sure Xander and Sandy won’t be mad at you or berate you. Thank God we are all different, otherwise life would have been very boring. Toque makes wonderful snuff but they’re not the only one. Some of their flavours are just not for me and I use a lot of other manufacturer’s snuff as well. And so does a lot of other members. Samuel Gawith makes wonderful snuff and nothing can touch their Apple. And so say all of us.

Wow, saucy jack! You’ve completely misread me! I’m plenty relaxed. I never said SG was bad or blows. They have a few duds, yes, but they have some fantastic ones too. So does Toque. So do most companies. How is someone disagreeing or making a counterpoint berating you? I’m not mad at you, never was. Lighten up. You can say whatever you want about any snuff, and you won’t get me mad. Promise. I might not always agree, but I won’t get mad or berate you. This is what we do on this forum. You make a point about a snuff, and everyone chimes in with their opinion. No one is right or wrong, its opinion, after all. We generally like to hear each others opinions or we wouldn’t participate. I want to hear your opinions, not force mine on you. I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings. I would hope that you can participate freely here without fear.

My tastes change with the seasons. Samuel Gawith and Gawith Hoggarth were my favourite snuff manufacturers over the spring, whilst I wasn’t really into Toque, but for some reason my tastes changed when SP Extra, Berwick Brown and Natural Toast were launched. I also started to encounter a lot of SG snuffs that I didn’t like. I still love many SG snuffs (their Kendal Brown, Grousemoor, SP No. 1 High Mill, Black Coffee and Golden Glow), but I’ve found I now prefer the grinds and flavours from McChrystals (menthols and SPs), Toque (SPs and toasts) and Wilsons (SPs and floral snuffs). Who knows, I might get a craving for Poschl snuffs this year. But at the moment, I’m just happy to enjoy what Toque et al. have to offer at the moment. Long may everyone have different tastes - the world would be a boring place if they didn’t.
