I have my eye on a Patrick Collins birdseye maple snuffbox. My question is, how much do they hold? I use about 2g per day.
I don’t own one, but I can tell you why: I was going to buy one but realised that it would hold too much snuff for my daily use, which is about the same as you. I can’t remember how much they hold, but I do remember passing on it because I was concerned about it not keeping the snuff fresh given the small amount that I use. I have recently started taking much bigger pinches though, so I may be in the market for one soon. They certainly are beautiful boxes.
I will keep that in mind. Thanks for the input
Where can I get a Patrick Collins snuff box?
Where can I get a Patrick Collins snuff box?
From his website. But you better hurry up, he’s only got one left in stock. Regarding whether or not they keep snuff fresh, they are fine for dry snuffs. I use one for Indian whites, and the other for Dholakia Sparrow. Don’t notice any issues even after three days. I don’t use them for Abraxas snuffs, which seem more sensitive to exposure.
they could hold about 10g of snuff, but if you intend to use it as a daily snuff box you only fill it with as much snuff as your going to use that day and any leftovers will get rejuvenated when you fill it with fresh snuff then next day.
They come in various sizes, They hold enough; more than 2 Grams
I should email him–I’ve got some nice stablized wood that would make an awesome box, and perhaps be OK for the moister snuffs. Wish I had the skills to make one.
I should email him.
No, maybe we should start a change.org petition to ask him to make more boxes. I’d buy another two of the standard boxes, if they were available. Stabilized wood would be interesting. I always wondered if he could somehow treat the wood he uses so that the boxes are more suitable for moist snuffs. He gives a stern little warning about using waxes for that purpose, but I used Paragon wax effectively to get the lid to slide more smoothly.
Yes, I would like a left handed triple tech box
I’ve got a beautiful hunk of stabilized dark maple that I bought for knife making. I’m also partial to Desert Iron Wood, which is pretty dense naturally. I would think any of the denser or stabilized woods would be a better choice for a snuff box than untreated maple (as nice as it looks).
What’s the problem?.. Just because you buy a snuffbox, that doesn’t mean that you MUST fill it up all the way! When I fill up my heartwood snuffbox (3" x 2" x 0.8") it takes 2 or 3 days to use up all of the snuff. It doesn’t dry out on me. (I use 6 Photo Kailash.)
I rarely fill mine all the way. Far to much to use in one day if i fill the thing up. As @howdydave says nothing wrong with part filling one
Who said there was a problem?
@mjohns the first comment from drbeat
Ok I see
So did you buy that Birdseye maple box?
I plan on placing my order this week. I’ve been looking at other boxes as well and I’ve finally made my mind up.
I was curious about this thing of “How much snuff does a Patrick Collins’ box hold?”, so I just weighed it out on some scales. With Cheeta, filled pretty full but not right to the brim, it comes in at about four grams with the triple-tech. I find that’s pretty much perfect for a day’s supply if I don’t take many other types, there’s usually just a bit left by the time I go to bed.
I own a Patrick Collins holder and I don’t fill it to the top, I just don’t use that much snuff. If I am out of home for a couple days I do a good fill and thats it. I dont think you’ll regret it. visit this site is awesome https://www.swisscubancigars.com/index.php/montecristo-cuban-cigars.html
For smaller snuff boxes you might want to look up pill boxes.
I forgot about pill boxes. A local music and, odd ends store use to sell a lot of beautiful little pill boxes. Not sure if their air tight or not though.
The problem with pill boxes is there is nothing to stop snuff from clogging up the hinge and they aren’t snuff proof, put a pillbox full of snuff in your pocket and you’ll end up with a pocket full of snuff.
Darn. When ever I saw them I thought they were cocaine boxes disguised as pill boxes considering the store it was in.
I’m brand new to snuffing and full of questions - one of which is about new boxes tainting the snuff. Both mine smell of the woods they are made of and I’m afraid of tainting. Is there a way of breaking them in, cleansing them or do you just put your snuff in and over time the box will smell of snuff instead of wood?
I have quite a few wooden boxes. You do get ghosting, so you are right - in due time your box will smell of snuff not wood, but possibly if the wood smell is very strong and the snuff quite delicate then the reverse might happen. I would suggest that you keep to one type of snuff per box - I have one for SPs only and another for Jockey Club only, for example. @basement_shaman is very knowledgeable about wooden boxes, and may be able to offer some more useful tips.

Waxing will help though there will still be some ghosting, I tend to keep the same category in my wooden snuff box, such as kendals, but I have dumped black rappee in it
Also waxing will help prevent the wooden snuff box from drying your snuff out, and if the snuff is going to be in the box more than a week then I would but it in a jar with a damp cloth over night to rehydrate it.
My wood boxes eventually lost their scent. Its not a big deal. If they imparted their scent to snuff, I never knew it. My everyday snuffs are toasts, scotches SPs and schmalzlers. I change the actual snuffs routinely but the same type always goes in the same box. I have one wood box assigned exclusively to toasts (padauk) and one to scotches (canary). The SPs go in a reused tin until I can afford a silver box. The schmalzlers go in either a stone or porcelain schmalzer bottle. This way ghosting is never really an issue.
Although I will add that if you decide to put a strongly scented snuff in a wood box, and then want to change that box’s purpose later, the best method is to fill the box with baking soda and let it sit for a few days, so that the soda absorbs most of the old scent. Also most woods do not have that strong of a scent except maybe cedar or cypress but these usually don’t get made into snuffboxes.
One other point about tainting, though mainly metal related not wood Some metals will give off a smell as they oxidize. I’ve heard reports that copper boxes are ok, but I hate the smell of my hands after counting a jar of pennies. Not something I want to snuff. Pewter I’m also leery about. Silver is good, and gilded (gold plated) interior silver is best. Stainless steel is probably awesome too but I’ve not used it. Reusing old tins (coated steel or aluminum) is good for awhile until they start to oxidize. Meaning you can get a few months to a year out of them before they get skunky.
Thanks, guys - very useful comments and info. Now I’m off to Google a lot of what you said! OK - translated and understood. Now off to spend some money - but no. Ask first! Schmalzlers in their bottles have grabbed me! Where, Xander, should I start with them? Daft question unless you know I like plain and menthol, medium coarse and medium moist '‘other’ snuffs. Any advice, please?
