Question about Sir Walter Scott's Pontefract Priory...

Hello all, it’s been a while since I signed in, but I’ve visited regularly. I placed an order at Snuffhouse a few days ago (just before they did the special offers on the Dholakia Coconut Toffee, Aniseed and SG Top Mill, as is my typical luck!), and one of the snuffs in the order was Pontefract Priory.

My order arrived this morning, and I eagerly took the lid off this one, to be confronted with what appeared to be a ‘cake’ of snuff, quite solid with a  few cracks in it, and what appeared to be a possible ‘bloom’ on it (I didn;t have my reading glasses on at the time, so 'twas all a little blurred).

It smells, ok, and I’ve scratched the surface and it looks ok underneath, and seems to be freeing up into grains, but I’m loath to try it just in case - can anyone tell me if that;s how it’s supposed to look?

That was the way my tin of Thrice Brewed looked after sitting for a month or so. Since it was also a little clumped and somewhat drier than when I opened it I ran it through a sieve. It seems to be fine, no question about it being moldy, it’s not. OTOH, I did lose a tin of Pontefract Priory to mold due to improper storage during hot and humid weather. Use your best judgement, if it looks like mold, smells ‘off’, toss it.

Lucky you. I placed an order including pontifract prior on the 25th last month, still waiting for it. :frowning:
