Hi all, I have just started using snuff and will be going to the UK in October and will have a chance to go to Covent Garden in London. How are the snuff’s they make?
They are excellent, but most are clones to Wilsons of Sharrow snuffs. The M&W/Covent brand is made by WoS. A few, however, have no equivalent under the WoS label, such as Jock’s Choice. Also they recently started selling the defunct Smith’s snuffs under the Covent brand. These are made for them by Gawith Hoggarth but again a few are not clones of GH snuffs, but are unique, such as Attar of Roses and George IV. Some of their names have been altered from their former Smith’s names. Not sure off the top of my head, but there is a thread about it here somewhere. Hope you have a good trip and get yourself a nice bundle there.
Yeah I saw the thread on here about these. But as a beginner I wanted to know which would be best for me!
Well, the M&W Covent brand all being WoS snuffs all are the same grind, and I found WoS’s basic grind to be newbie friendly when I was starting out. After that its just personal preference to whichever flavor appeals to you. Attached is a description of their 4 basic ones. They also have 4 others: Covent Rose, Emerald Mocha, Rumba and Citrus Delight. A newer one is on their website here: http://www.davy.co.uk/documents/cigar\_and\_snuff/Snuff-Menu-and-Guide-August-2013.pdf
Thanks when I am in the UK I will check them out. Don’t suppose you can sample them in the shop
I’ve heard that you can, but I’ve never been myself. Order some WoS ones now to get an idea.
I have a WoS bandy and its ok just not what I expected less brandy and more floral
Hmm, that one is not really a good example of their style. The boozy ones (only recently added to their range) tend to be clumpy when fresh, and then lose their flavor fast. Most people like Best SP, Tom Buck, Lemon Grove, Grand Cairo, Rose, etc. These have been popular for many years.
Yeah out off all the one’s I got from MrSnuff I would say it not the best but I have heard great things about WoS
@tollickd Yes, you can sample them in the shop, but bear in mind that the sample tins they have available are not in top condition - not kept airtight and frequently opened - so work on the principle that what you take away will be less dry and with more scent!
I think snuff companies should be required by law to operate right next to single malt Scotch distilleries…that way they could offer a combo sniff and sip tour…throw in a couple of hot tour guides…and I’d never leave
thank @Justin I will sure give them a try. I saw the list that they have tins and Tubs (anyone got a pic of these?)
The tubs are for the former Smith’s blends. I posted a pic of this one: in this thread: http://snuffhouse.vanillaforums.com/discussion/comment/277629 The M&W ones are in 25g steel tins identical to the WoS tins. They look like this:
But years ago they were in 10g tubes like these vintage puppies:
thanks @Xander for all the info! I cant wait to go shopping for these! Do the tubs have a good seal?
Not particularly They’re screw top which is good, but they don’t have a gasket or screw down real tight. Nonetheless the snuffs I’ve had in them were not dried out. They are the exact same as the Gawith Hoggarth 25g tubs that you can order from Mr Snuff or wherever, but occasionally I hear a horror story of one popping open in the mail. So order a few to check them out yourself, and hope for non-aggressive package handlers.
@Xander what are a WoS erzacs for Rumby and Emerald? I think about buying some M&W but if they’re just relabeled WoS I’d rather buy WoS.
@Viertel they may not have exact equivalents. I have not tried either of them. I was led to believe that Emerald Mocha was a clone of Irish Coffee, but a few days ago it was pointed out to me that it is unique. I can’t say for sure either way, having not had either. Rumba is rum scented if its close to any WoS one it would be Rum & Raisin, but again I have not had either.
Do they ship to USA?
