Problem with Wooden Cherry Snuff Box from MrSnuff

On my last order from MrSnuff I chose a nice wooden snuffbox (my 1st proper snuff box) : http://mrsnuff.com/\_product\_74608/Snuffbox\_Cherry\_White\_Techno I’ve used this snuffbox yesterday loaded with some Poschl Schmalzler SF Sudfrucht, witch is quite a moist snuff. Today the box was fine all day long until it stopped sliding totally. I emptied the box of all the schmalzler and replaced it with some more dry snuff, Hedges… anyone had issues with this particular wooden snuffbox? On MrSnuff I can see they are hand crafted in USA and I believe the manufacturing is good. If anyone has some tips on how to get this box to slide smooth again I would appreciate it. Cheers

I think it probably abosrbed the moisture. Might explain the stone jars used for germany snuffs.

Yep, I agree. The wood absorbed the moisture and swelled a bit. Because well… when wood gets moist… it swells.

I’m not sure about that type of box- but I have had wood boxes that stuck on me. Without using tool- use your thumb to push the top off the same side as you slid it on. Then try flipping the top around and inserting it. The few wood snuff boxes I have seem to be cut a certain way. The sliding top should face the same direction everytime. Also, watch for moist snuffs in wood boxes-- it can swell the wood for a short period of time.

Someone put some butcher block oil on their slides, didn’t they? I kind of remember a post on that…

Beeswax wouldn’t be a bad idea, or mineral oil.

I have noticed that my Patrick Collins tripletech box sliding top will vary in tightness based upon the outdoor humidity as well. I brought my box with me to the Caribbean a few weeks ago during my cruise and while taking a pinch atop a small volcanic mountain in Dominica and enjoying the view of the Atlantic Ocean, my box jammed as I was closing it. It was about 95 degrees F and probably 85% rH. I fixed it easily enough by being ginger with the box, but it stayed tight until I came back home to dry and cold Minnesota air. Now, it is almost too loose for my tastes. Spring is about to be upon us, so I am confident the box will perform flawlessly in a couple of weeks.

The box seems to be sliding better today, I’ve emptied it and left it try out. I filed it up with some Hedges L260 seems working better. I do not have any beeswax or mineral oil unfortunately, will look for some though. Thanks for the advice.

Candle wax will work just fine.

The solution to this problem can be found on page two of this thread. Thanks again to Xander for providing the answers for me. My box has been fine ever since.

I got one and it turned out to be like a brick, bad slide and roughly manufactured. It was very cheap so I wouldn’t bother to complain but I wondered whether it was a cheap Indian import or the like as opposed to US manufacture.
