Any takers? Wilsons version of Princes, a coarse black moist snuff fermented in brine, is one of my staples. If mill-fresh it has an unpleasant whiff that to me suggests furniture polish. After a drum or canister is opened I prefer to decant the contents into 2oz F&T tins. Before consumption it is advisable to air the contents of a tin for several hours, shaking occasionally, to mellow the initial reek, after which it is fine and ready for the box. The most noticeable difference after airing is the gentle but unmistakable aroma of tonquin. Here it is much more subtle than that available under the Fribourg & Treyer label. It is also cheaper and less overtly floral. Princes is, perhaps, an acquired taste, but once acquired it becomes indispensable. It is perfect for the heavy snuff-taker.
Philip, I’m really glad about this post. I’ve ordered some of this snuff and now I’m ready for when it arrives!
I ordered a 1/2lb drum of princes along with a lot of other snuff from wos. got an email the order was shipped on Thursday should be arriving soon.
Yes, I quite enjoy Princes. I also reccomend the G. Smith and Sons Princes Dark to those who have access to it. I find it the least fragrant and most straightforward of all the Princes varieties.
I love Princes. I have a 1/2 lb drum of it on the way. I love the pungent aroma coupled with the dark tobacco. Lovely.
Love the F&T version.Rich coarse and very moist . Love the auroma. Reminds me ( a heavy smoker) of licourice with a hint of aniseed.Used straight from the tin (no drying out) Best of all, gives a delightful feeling of relaxation and well being. Remember the Hamlet cigar ads?
The geranium annoys me a bit too easily, Although I do like this style of tobacco. I go for the Brunswick instead. It’s got that citrus tweek that balances out the geranium for me. I do have a couple of pinches of the Princes hiding away somewhere. I’ll give it one last go in your name before I write it off completely. Cheers!
Yes, I quite like WoS Princes, too. It’s one of the few products by WoS that I’ve come to appreciate.
The only problem with course snuff is that it has a tendency to fall out of my nose after a pinch.
Love it .
Glad to hear that I’m not the only enthusiast of this version of the non-proprietary named snuff. Most people know from the satirical rhyme that the Prince Regent/George IV was obese (Georgie Porgie pudding and pie). His toadies suggested that black was the choice of clothing colour for fatties. It was in this hue that he spent his glutton-filled and worthless adult life. Black snuff was taken to prevent obvious staining - or so sources say - hence the association with the Prince Regent. Any snuff fermented in salt-solution is gentler on the nose, blows freely and is less congestive. Easy to take 8-10 grams daily in maximum sized pinches. With all that nicotine even the heaviest smoker has no reason to smoke anymore. Another snuff that invites heavy use without congestion is London Brown by Samuel Gawith. To the best of my knowledge this is the only Brown Rappee still available in either France or Britain. Its ingredients are tobacco, brine and TLC - nothing else. The dreadful tap-boxes can’t possibly convey the wonderful tobacco aroma, colour and soft moistness of the genuine article. If you are or have been a pipe or cigar smoker and wish for a substitute then you won’t be disappointed. I’d order 1/2 drum and chance it. Scotch Black is similar to Black Rappee, but is a more flavoursome mixture.
I’ve taken about 5 pinches of this stuff, and I just can’t get into it. It smells almost of a barnyard to me, and not the good barnyard smells either. I’ve tried to like it, since its so highly regarded, but…
Fresh directly from Wilson’s mill… There should be a damn warning label on this about how strong it is. Whooee! Wet course and black this stuff isn’t for light weights. Heck a couple of pinches and I didn’t need another for an hour or so. The feeling of complete sedation came over me with the scent mellowing into a leathery-smokey thing, this another winner from Wilson’s.
Delicious flavour but not useable for my above mentioned reason. Its quite nice with some SP to smooth it out though.
i have never tried the wilsons version the tin of f&t i have is almost empty as it seems to be the snuff i crave when i come home after a night on the razz
Does this Princes have musk in it? It’s just a deal-breaker for me. If not I’d try it.
@PhilipS I am trying to cut down my intake of cigars so your comments above are very useful. Would you recommend the Princes or the SG London Brown as being best for that purpose?
